  1. With JBJ , objectivity is hard to find. In fact , it is hard to find objectivity in baseball or in almost anything you can mention. Partiality is a part of human nature. In business , it is important to be as objective as possible. You need to be results oriented. The old " bottom line " , if you will. However , there are people , who if they don't like the bottom line , will search for anything to try and discredit and explain away that bottom line. That does not work. You have to be objective and results oriented. As for JBJ , he should be given more time to improve. His track record warrants that. But improve he must. What he has done so far this year is not acceptable.
  2. It is actually sad watching JBJ bat. Pitchers are not even trying to pitch him tough any more. Just throwing fastballs down the middle. And he can't catch up. Hard to understand just what is wrong.
  3. WAR is a contrived stat , derived from a combination of actual stats and using a certain formula to calculate. Somebody created it. Take it for what it is worth. There is certainly some value in it , but I think one can form their own player evaluations by watching and using the traditional stats. In any case , there will always be differences of opinion. So far this season , Mookie Betts has been the best player in the game. I don't know how anyone could disagree with that.
  4. To be fair , some of that is while rehabbing. Probably not at 100 %. His MLB numbers are : 422 P.A.s. Batting .260 , with a .689 OPS.
  5. Swihart is younger , faster , more athletic. Switch hitter. Very possible that he turns out to be better than Leon. I am sure some team will be willing to find out.
  6. Pedroia will be back shortly. Then a roster move will be made. We have enough utility guys , and we don't need three catchers. Either Swihart or Leon has to go. Cora seems to prefer Leon. There is no sense keeping Swihart if you are not going to use him. Trade him for whatever you can get. Of course , this could be rued because Swihart has a chance to be better , while Leon will never be more than what he is. But that's how it goes. I'm sure Dombrowski understands this.
  7. A realistic appraisal shows that , with 75% of the season still to play , the Sox and Yankees will remain locked in a battle for the AL East , with the loser getting the first wild card. The only other competition would seem to be for the second wild card. Does not say much for competitive balance. Too many really weak teams.
  8. Bradley is in a terrible slump. However , he has established himself as a major leaguer. Optioning him to Pawtucket would be a slap in the face. I doubt very much that is a consideration. Cora will continue to try and help him break out of it. When Pedroia returns , it should come down to a choice between Swihart and Leon. The other possibility is some manipulation of the D.L.
  9. When I talk about moving Devers to first or DH , it is in the future. Of course not this year. Anyway , I think he will stay at third. If you could get Machado for Swihart and a prospect to be named , it would be done in a minute. Not about to happen.
  10. Tinkering with the batting order is a popular pastime. Benintendi is a kid with a high ceiling. Mookie Betts is now challenging Mike Trout for the title of " Best in the game." Things are going very well. Let's not tinker too much.
  11. With 25% of the season gone , the Red Sox are tied for the best record in MLB. But some fans are disgruntled . I guess they had unreasonably lofty expectations.
  12. The reality is that Devers is not going down to Pawtucket. His defense will improve. If it doesn't , he will be moved to first or , possibly , DH. And you don't give up anything of value for Machado unless you can sign him long term. This is not rocket science.
  13. People are getting carried away with this. Exaggerating their opinion of JBJ , both with the positive and negative aspects. The reality is that he is a better hitter than he has shown so far this year. He will have a hot streak and improve his numbers. On the other hand , while very good defensively , he simply does not make a whole lot of plays that other centerfielders don't. That is a myth. He is what he is. Let's not go overboard one way or another. There is no chance of trading him for anything of much value. The idea of releasing him is absurd. In the end , he will be what he always has been. The team has the best record in MLB . Leave well enough alone.
  14. No one has hit .400 since the immortal Ted Williams. But J.D. " could be a solid .400 hitter with a little tweaking . I know this because I played and know baseball. " As the lady in that Chevy commercial says , " Seriously ? " By the way , with about one quarter of the season gone , Martinez is outperforming Giancarlo Stanton by a large margin.
  15. The difference on offense might be marginal if Jackie was putting up his normal numbers. But he is not doing that , not even remotely close. I do expect him to pick up the pace soon , but no defense can justify the lack of production that we have been seeing so far this year.
  16. Sabathia has been on quite a roll . That bubble was due to burst. Overweight , out of shape , pot bellied warhorse. Already planning his retirement.
  17. I still say bringing in Kimbrel was a desperation move. With one out , the tying run could score from third any number of ways. If that happens , you have your closer pitching in the eighth inning , in a tie game on the road. Barnes and Smith already used , and wanting to stay away from Kelly. I think Cora was hoping for a strikeout there. If the game was considered so vital that you would use Kimbrel for five outs , why not just use him for six ?
  18. Swihart is a young player with potential to be good. We don't really know if he can achieve it at this time. With Pedroia coming back , we have more than enough utility type players. I would give Swihart a shot behind the plate and see what happens. His trade value is minimal right now. When Pedroia does return , either Swihart or Leon goes.
  19. Despite the loss , one thing to store in memory for the future ; Stanton looked totally overmatched against Kimbrel. That may come up again going forward.
  20. Bringing Kimbrel in with the tying run on third with one out in the eighth in early May smacks of desperation. Part of the learning experience for a rookie manager. If you don't trust Barnes , don't bring him in to pitch the eighth with a one run lead in Yankee Stadium. Live and learn. It's a long season.
  21. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome !!!! It is important to have a good sense of humor about these things.
  22. Wonder if he choked her ? He has been known to choke on occasion.
  23. Some folks are starting to stretch things a bit in order to justify JBJ 's spot in the lineup. No need to do that. No need for the exaggerations and hypothetical " what ifs " . He is what he is. He will certainly hit somewhat better as the season progresses. On the other hand , his defense is far from indispensable to the team's success. Bottom line : Without a better alternative , he deserves a spot in the lineup.
  24. Mookie Betts is a bona-fide superstar. One of the very best . It is going to cost plenty to sign him long term. Plenty. The Sox are as capable of doing that as anyone. However , you still need a team around him. You can't just go cheap everywhere else in order to afford him.
  25. I'm still trying to figure out how someone " is sick of us losing games because of Kimbrel ." What ???
