  1. That is a pretty general statement. Kimbrel is not just a relief pitcher. He is an elite closer. One of the best of his era. For what it would take to sign Kimbrel , you would probably get a good , but not elite , position player or starting pitcher. To get that would cost more , maybe a lot more. To make a decision , we would need to know which position player or starting pitcher could be had for Kimbrel money.
  2. Hard to compare strategy in baseball and football. In season , baseball is played almost daily - while football has a week to prepare and strategize for the opponent. Regardless , whether it be baseball , football or any business or industry, a good manager / coach / supervisor makes a big difference.
  3. Sometimes it all depends on whose Ox is being gored. So to speak. I guess we all have our favorites , as well as our scapegoats.
  4. Eck may come off as too blunt and critical to the players . Especially when compared to O'Brien , who is the ultimate ass kisser.
  5. Isn't UZR essentially someone's eye test ? As for Brock Holt ; he is a utility player. As these types go , he is okay. Not the stiff that some make him out to be.
  6. The chances of Nunez being safe were slim , to say the least. That made it a bad call. The smarter move would have been to hold him and give Betts a chance. Playing for the inside straight is a bad move even if every so often you hit it.
  7. I can see taking a chance if the play at the plate will be close. But that was not the case here. Better to have Betts up with the bases loaded against a faltering pitcher. The coach should have known this.
  8. A third base coach should be aware of the game situation , and have a plan before the play unfolds. In this case , the pitcher was struggling mightily , Betts was coming up next and Granderson , with a strong arm , was starting his throw before the runner even reached third base. Sending Nunez was clearly a blunder no matter how you try to spin it. He was out by the proverbial mile. " Send him in " Kim would have even been embarrassed .
  9. Dumpster diving. Desperation ?
  10. Maybe the Yankees will be at full strength in time for a one game , wild card playoff with the Angels.
  11. The Yankees just need better offense , better defense , better pitching , better managing and better health. Other than that , all is well.
  12. Let me repeat. " There is no dilemma." Smooth sailing ahead. Be happy.
  13. Another day , another win. Ho - hum. Meanwhile , the overrated New York franchise is getting smaller in the rear view mirror.
  14. Sabathia coming back , but for how long ? Fat , pot - bellied , out of shape , soft tossing veteran. New York's rotation is a mess. Where are Adams , Sheffield and the rest of their much ballyhooed pitching phenoms? The ship is taking on water.
  15. It is high time for some of the Yankee's heralded prospects to step up and show why they are so highly regarded. Otherwise , Cashman may have to dive deeper into the proverbial dumpster.
  16. Against good right hand pitching , Stanton is bailing like a ball shy Little Leaguer. Some really ugly swings. Overall , the Yankees are banged up and somewhat overrated. Red Sox may have a cakewalk to the division.
  17. With the Sox at 13 - 2 , some folks are desperately searching for things to worry about.
  18. Groucho Marx said , " I don't want to be a member of any club that would have me as a member ." I don't think we want any grizzled veteran that would be willing to be stashed in Pawtucket until July or August.
  19. I think Cora brings the energy and enthusiasm to the job that Farrell seemed to be losing. The players can pick up on that. As far as in-game decisions ; it is too soon to make much of a judgement. Certainly cannot argue with the results so far.
  20. The question really cannot be answered without knowing who you would get in return. Surely, you would not trade him just for the sake of trading him.
  21. Yankees are dropping like the proverbial flies.
  22. Absolutely. The pennant race with N.Y. could be tight. But the wild card is there for the runner up.
  23. Besides just giving guys a day off , I think Cora is trying to get a good look at all 25 players on the roster.
  24. Bell , I'm not necessarily an eternal optimist. This is my honest assessment. I like Dombrowski. I like Cora. And I think this is a very talented team. Looking around , I see a lot of weak , beatable teams in both leagues. I really do think it will be a smooth ride to the playoffs.
  25. We know about the " hat trick " and the dreaded " golden sombrero " . We need a phrase for a 5 K humiliation. Maybe something in Italian that rhymes with Giancarlo.
