  1. Chavis and Houck? ... And Beeks. Chavis and Houck and Beeks. Oh my. Seriously , I would be amazed if Miami went for that. Even with the immortal Scherff included. Stanton is one of the best, if not the best , slugger in the game today. Surely , they will get better offers than that.
  2. If Jeter deals Stanton without getting more than a few marginal prospects in return , they will probably find his body in Biscayne Bay. Some of these proposals are preposterous.
  3. " Take it in stride and enjoy the craziness " . Not a bad philosophy for life in general.
  4. Kimmi , There is much value in advanced metrics , but credibility is lost when we hear things like " home runs are overrated " . That is over think. Home runs equal an instant run / runs. And often are the difference in the game. How can that be overrated ? If it is stats that you care about ; home runs greatly enhance OPS and ( I guess ) WAR. If 59 home runs did not get your attention , how many would it take ? This does not mean I am advocating a trade for Stanton if it involved giving up a lot of talent in addition to the money. But a home run is the best possible result for a hitter. Not at all overrated.
  5. Apparently you missed the point I was making that we should go the free agent route and skip the major overhaul. But that's okay. I know you tend to get carried away with supporting your viewpoint. Obviously , any trade for a Stanton or Trout would be a major move compared to signing Martinez . As for JBJ , other teams may inquire about him , but what are they willing to give up ? My guess is that it would be nothing special. Certainly not what could be called an impact player.
  6. JBJ has been unfairly maligned by some , and quite overrated by some others. Basically he is what he is , somewhere in the middle. I doubt his trade value is as high as some might think. An outfield of Benintendi in left , Betts in center and Stanton in right would be a definite improvement. Personally , if the Sox are looking to make a blockbuster deal, I would like to see what it would take to get Trout instead of Stanton. But I think a trade partner for either of these would be looking for Benintendi and Devers rather than JBJ. In the end , we might be better off going the free agent route for now. This team needs some improvement power wise , but not necessarily a major overhaul.
  7. The " Cooler " strikes again.
  8. There is a bottom line here. After two straight dismal last place finishes , the Sox have two straight division championships. Spin it any way you want , that is the reality. We all know by now that anything can happen in the playoffs. But the Sox reached the playoffs largely through the acquisitions of Dombrowski. Ortiz retired , and most of our young holdovers fell short of expectations. For the most part , the prospects dealt have not amounted to the proverbial hill of beans. I don't really see any argument here. Have some faith. To me , the talk of an impending cliff is not only a failure to enjoy the moment , but a misplaced case of Cherington nostalgia. No reason for that. We are better off now. And , Pawtucket , Portland , Greenville , etc. will be okay too. There will be no cliff in the near future. Stop worrying .
  9. I see no reason why the Sox cannot remain a contender for the forseeable future. A good young core of talent. Plenty of revenue. A demanding fan base. Good management. As for young prospects , there will be more coming along , some who we have never heard of as yet. You only need a few to click. No need to worry about imaginary cliffs.
  10. Harm , Expecting big things from the Mariners now that they have hired a " Director of high performance". Not sure what that is or what they are paying her , but it does sound impressive.
  11. It's about time Verlander got a break in life.
  12. If the All Star Game still decided home field , the Astros would be at home for Game 7. Very possibly could make all the difference. The Dodgers , playing in the weaker National League , got home field advantage for their won/loss record. Maybe they should have interleague play decide it. The Astros would have benefitted from that also. Otherwise , just rotate it. Just a thought.
  13. Kind of crazy when a manager feels he cannot trust his closer with a three run lead in the ninth. Also , why is Liriano on the roster if he can't even be trusted to get a left handed hitter out ? Houston better hope for a complete game from Verlander. Their bullpen is loaded with chokers.
  14. Sometimes guys can choke , but later find what it takes to deal with the pressure. Sometimes skills just diminish. And there are always exceptions to every rule. That does not change the reality that some people can handle pressure situations , and some cannot.
  15. Like many Sox fans , I doubted that I would live to see a Red Sox championship. Now , I have seen three. Everyone who contributed to any of the three pretty much gets a pass from me. Beckett surely is one of them. But that does not make any of them immune from criticism.
  16. There has been a lot of debate here about the reality of " clutch" . In my view , it is just too hard to define what is truly clutch. Every post season at bat or every late in close game at bat is not necessarily clutch. For most players , there are probably only a few truly clutch moments. Too small a sample size to form a definitive conclusion. On the other hand , choke can be pretty obvious. You can often see it in the eyes and body language of an athlete who just cannot deal with the high pressure situations. This is more often seen in sports which require precision of execution. In sports where adrenaline is more important , it is not always the case. So , maybe " clutch " is just the absence of " choke " . Especially when one is composed while the opponent is rattled by the situation and the consequences. While a certain amount of chance , luck or " randomness " will always occur ; it is pretty easy to spot a choker. Bottom line : Some guys get the apple , and some don't.
  17. Firing Dombrowski is absurd. He took over a cellar dwelling club, acquired the key players to turn things around quickly. You do not fire the GM for a playoff loss.
  18. I would think big. Call the Angels and find out what it would take to get Trout.
  19. Tough " Player's weekend ". Not only did we get swept , but we had to put up with those dumb nicknames as well. At least we can take solace and find humor with the announce team. Never mind Martin and Lewis , forget Abbott and Costello . We have O'Brien and Salty. The back and forth between these guys is hilarious. Unintentionally , but hilarious nevertheless .
  20. That has been done too. Bill Veeck hired the height challenged Eddie Gaedel as a pinch hitter. MLB outlawed it. I wonder if that would hold up today?
  21. Mike Marshall picked him off first base. After that, he wouldn't take a lead. Just stayed on the bag.
  22. Watching the Cards meltdown in the 9th is yet another reason to be grateful we have Kimbrel. Lights out closers are invaluable. You see it all the time. Teams struggle mightily to get those last three outs. Closing ain't easy.
  23. It seems to me that Chapman has a big arm , but a tendency to choke when the stakes are highest. The velocity is there , but the control is lacking. Glad we have Kimbrel.
  24. ESPN announcers suck. Lot of empty seats. Ellsbury is a bum . Glad we didn't re-sign him. This umpire is horrible. Sale for MVP. Too bad we gave up those prospects for him. ESPN announcers are the worst. Sale is great. We better get some runs for him. Farrell better not blow this. Don't take Sale out too soon. Don't leave him in too long. I don't trust the bullpen. Except for Kimbrel.............Good win. Still upset that we didn't sweep. That about covers it.
  25. Nunez is an aggressive ballplayer. He was looking to get the tying run to third with one out. I can't fault him for that. Hicks has one of the best arms in the game. I don't know if Nunez was aware of that , or took it into consideration. But it still took a strong throw and a nice pick and tag by Frazier to get him. Sox have made quite a few base running blunders , but I don't think that was one of them. Of course , hindsight is always right.
