  1. Do you get the MLB channel ? The game is on there also . And , why don't you have MASN ?
  2. " Choking " is a term that has come into common usage , usually in a derogatory manner , and most often for athletes who fail in what we deem " clutch " situations. We can debate it all day. But " anticipatory anxiety " is a very real condition that can effect the performance of even the best athletes at times. Different things can trigger it in different people. It is possible , though not easy , to overcome it.
  3. We cannot get inside the head of athletes to know what situations they can handle and which trigger the " choke " reflex. Different things for different players. There are basketball players who want to take the last shot with the game on the line , but put them on the free throw line in that situation and they are a nervous wreck. Many coaches will use a time out to " ice " free throw shooters or placekickers in football. Maybe Price feels less pressure in a relief role . Who knows ?
  4. It could be argued that the " back of the card " stats are the actual bottom line. And the " advanced metrics " are just a way of trying to figure out how we got there.
  5. Players would not last if they choked repeatedly. However , some athletes just cannot handle certain high pressure situations. Chances are the anxiety will get to them and they will choke in those certain situations. In normal situations , they are fine , or they can either overcome the anxiety or maybe just luck out in some pressure situations . It's all in the mind , but it is always there. While one might debate the existence of " clutch " , there can be no doubt about the existence of " choke " or " getting the apple " or " the yips " or whatever you want to call it. It is real. Athletes know it and try many things to overcome it. Some are able to completely get it out of their mind. Some just can't.
  6. If it wasn't for one lousy , hanging knuckleball , Boone would not have that job. Funny how fate works.
  7. I think the bottom line with JBJ is , take the bad with the good , hope the bad gets better and stay the course. Another reason not to trade him is team chemistry in a pennant race. A lot of these guys came up through the system together. They seem like a pretty tight group. Why disturb that now ? So , should JBJ be traded ? The answer is no , except in the unlikely event that it produces a significant upgrade. Stay the course.
  8. It is not too often that you enter July and have an every day player still below the Mendoza line. We can cite BABIP , bad luck and defensive shifts until the cows come home. You still have a very unproductive bat in the lineup. If you think his defense is worth the lack of offense , okay. I guess it is all a matter of opinion. It is time to put this debate to bed. The team is doing very well. Maybe we should leave well enough alone.
  9. Sometimes it is just a matter of matchups. Price vs Gray and Sale vs Severino would have made for two very interesting , albeit very different games. Instead , what we got was two blowouts. That's what happens when you put an ace up against a joker , ( or choker ) as was the case this weekend.
  10. Not for nothing , but Pedro worked quite a bit with Severino the past two off seasons. Thanks , Petey.
  11. The beautiful thing about stats is that there are now so many of them that one can almost always find one that supports their position.
  12. You know you really suck when Higashioka takes you bridge.
  13. Good evening: Welcome to the Mike Grace Memorial overreaction thread.
  14. Of course there is a lot of baseball still to be played , but this definitely has a big game feel to it. Possibly the two best teams in MLB , Sunday night , national TV , sellout crowd . It will be interesting to see how the various players respond.
  15. The game was over with Devers grand slam. Like a first round knockout. Actually , I thought it was over when I first saw the look on Sonny Gray's face. Looked like a nervous little boy going on his first date. Cashman will rue that deal.
  16. Kind of shows how the rivalry has changed. Now it is much more for the fans than it is for the players.
  17. These announcers are a thousand times better than what we will get on ESPN tomorrow night.
  18. Sale vs Gray = man against boy. No contest. Rubber game tomorrow night. Price vs Severino. Should be a good test for both teams.
  19. Sox are all over little Sonny. He looks like a nervous little kid out there. For all intents and purposes , this game is over. We can save Kimbrel for tomorrow night.
  20. Not too smart for his own good ; too scared for his own good. Little Sonny cannot handle the pressure. He had a couple of good years in Oakland , but I'm glad the Sox never acquired him. He is a loser.
  21. Back in the day , the A's had a left hander named Lou Brissie. A WW II vet who got his leg shot up in the war. Hobbled a bit and wore a brace on his knee. The Yankees tried to bunt on him. One more reason to hate them back then.
  22. Stand up can be tough , man. Sometimes it goes right over their heads.
  23. Doubt it. Fools like Dempster don't come along too often.
  24. In the annals of bad trade proposals , this one will have a category of it's own.
  25. Bell , That is true. However a lot of betting is just straight up between friends or acquaintances. Betting on the underdog at even money is a poor strategy indeed.
