  1. I think most people understand that anything can happen in the post season. So , give Ben credit for 2013 , but keep that in mind. That was an extraordinary year . A lot of things went right in the big games. That is beyond a G.M.' s control. The fact is that was his only good year, mixed in with three horrible seasons. He left the pitching in bad shape. I don't hate him. I actually would like to see him get a shot with the Mets. Maybe he will learn from his mistakes and do well.
  2. Maybe not your best starter , but why use your worst ? Also , I would add that the Met's best is DeGrom , who goes Sunday night. Especially with Syndergaard coming back from an injury. The only odds that improved were the odds on a Met's sweep.
  3. Having a lights out closer tends to enhance the randomness a bit.
  4. The undying affection for Ben Cherington is one of life's great mysteries.
  5. Dumb move by Boone. After four days off , he goes with his weakest starter , with predictable results. Now , he is facing the very real possibility of being swept by the Mets. George must be spinning like a top in his grave. Sox may well be nine or ten games up by the trade deadline. I guess he is thinking that Severino will be fresh for the wild card game. # in over his head
  6. Boone is overthinking. Probably psyched out. Dumb. Now he is setting the Yankees up for a loss tonight. Syndergaard vs German gives the Mets a real shot. Then Gray goes tomorrow and they face DeGrom Sunday night. Sox will continue to win and pull away.
  7. I would think the Dodgers feel confident they can sign Machado. They have the money . And , much like New York , L.A. is a magnet for many of these athletes. Look at the NBA. Places like Philly and Milwaukee are not nearly as attractive.
  8. Obviously. I wouldn't consider making the defense worse an accomplishment. As I said , in the N.L. , it might be worth it.
  9. I love it when you make a post in all sincerity , and someone begins their reply with " You do realize " .
  10. Good thing they have moderators on ( most ) baseball forums.
  11. I think it is almost a certainty that Phillips will be up soon. Then , either Lin or a bullpen arm goes down.
  12. If it was the N.L. , with no DH , it would make more sense. As it is , it really doesn't accomplish anything.
  13. The way to achieving the best record in baseball is with quality players. That is what Dombrowski has done. And if we need another starter , that is what he will look to do. Dumpster diving is not the way to go. Mostly just garbage and broken down trash in that dumpster. As for ERod , he is starting to look like another one of those guys who just can't stay healthy.
  14. The theory called " Occams's Razor " states that the best solution to a problem is usually the simplest and most obvious one. In improving on last year's team , the simplest solution was getting a big bat in the lineup. J.D. Martinez was the answer. No doubt , the change in managers also is a factor . Some people like to think too deeply into things , usually looking for something that supports their personal opinions.
  15. If Natick has been following the news , he will now " sincerely apologize " , state that he is so sorry if he offended anyone , beg for forgiveness , enter rehab and promise to play nice if he is reinstated. Sometimes it works.
  16. I never understood the rush to get rid of Swihart. A switch hitting catcher , with speed who can play other positions . Seems like a useful guy to keep around. Looks like Dombrowski agreed. Good thing.
  17. J.D. Martinez is the obvious choice. Cora also a big factor. Credit Dombrowski for both. Also , Mookie entering his prime. A true superstar. And then , there is the abundance of really weak opponents. But J.D. is the one that stands out the most.
  18. If the Sox can upgrade at second base without giving up too much , fine. But the priority should still be a late innings reliever. I would see what it takes to get Britton from Baltimore .
  19. By the time he is done , Mookie Betts will go down as one of the all time greats. His combination of elite athleticism and elite hand / eye coordination is rare and only found in the very best athletes. Add to that the fact that he has his head on perfectly straight and you have something truly special. The Red Sox need to find a way to keep him.
  20. Happ is one of the more overrated guys out there. Hardly much of an upgrade. I seriously doubt that Dombrowski would go after him. Don't think Cashman is that dumb either. Go big or go home. Happ is not the answer.
  21. With the All Star break coming up , he may only miss a few games. No need to panic.
  22. Might not happen. If Machado goes to the Dodgers and likes it in L.A. , he might re up with them. It is an attractive market and they have the money.
  23. The Sox had some great teams way back when. Just could not quite overcome the New York juggernaut in those days. Things have changed.
  24. I think obtaining a top notch bullpen arm would be the priority , as well as the most doable deal. My choice would be Britton. As for second base , with Pedroia's return looking less and less likely , it will be interesting to see what Phillips has to offer. He just might be the solution. Worse comes to worse , we stick with Holt and Nunez . We seem to be doing pretty well with them so far.
  25. There are too many variables to fairly compare teams from different eras. These Red Sox are currently the best team in baseball. That should be sufficient , although you would never know it from reading some of the comments.
