  1. There's a lot of bad teams out there waiting to be beaten.
  2. Scoreboard says - 4 - 1 , First place in the A.L. East. Not the least bit surprising. So far , I have not seen anything that is a cause for concern going forward. This is a very good team that should have a smooth ride to the post season.
  3. With all due respect to Gabe Kapler , evidently the data tech forgot to input " get somebody warmed up before you go to the mound to change pitchers " into the computer. As John Sterling might say ," That's technology , Susan. "
  4. As metrics come more and more into vogue , we will see some apparently strange and unexpected decisions being made by managers. It looks like some teams now actually have analytics people in the dugout. If managers want to get along , they may have to go along with this. In the end , the success or failure of the player will determine the wisdom of the manager's decisions. And it has always been that way. For me , I think there is certainly some value in analytics , but I would never let the Industrial Engineer run the workplace operation. Leave that to people who know the business.
  5. Basically , Holt beat out Marrero for the final spot. Rightly so. Holt brings more to the team than some give him credit for. As for late inning defensive replacements ; I don't think that is part of the plan. Devers is a rising star. I don't think Cora plans on pulling him for defense late. Let him grow in confidence and develop as an all around player.
  6. Apparently , he takes exception to that ? Who doesn't ?
  7. Sonny Gray has always been a little overrated.
  8. Notln , You neglect to mention a few key points. Mister Fister was not signed during spring training as depth insurance. He was acquired off waivers ( on the cheap ) in late June when the need arose. And while he was a help , the fact is he went 5 - 9 , with a 4.88 ERA. Arguably , the worst year of his career. He then bombed in the ALDS. My point is , that should the need arise , pitchers like Fister can always be acquired without much trouble or expense. Meanwhile, use Pawtucket to audition the arms we already have.
  9. I think some fans tend to develop a hoarding disorder. They want to hold on to all our prospects because " we may need them someday." And they want to collect over the hill ham and eggers for " depth " , " just in case we have a lot of injuries." Let it go. There will always be more prospects coming along . As for the ham and eggers , they are a dime a dozen. You can always pick one up cheap if need be.
  10. The idea about having a farm is that there comes a time when you harvest the crop , take it to market and see what you can get for it. When you get top of the line talent like Sale and Kimbrel , you did well. Maybe the farm is then depleted , but there is a time to sow and a time to reap.
  11. Our core staff is Sale , Price , Pomeranz and Porcello . Rodriguez and Wright are expected back soon . We have backups like Johnson and Velasquez. I might be forgetting one or two others. And a deep bullpen. Also , some young prospects who could help at some point. Exactly how many injuries are we anticipating ? Why do we need " depth guys " , aka veteran ham and eggers , to take up roster space at Pawtucket ? Worse comes to worse , you can always pick up one of these guys on the cheap. Now , if we can afford to acquire a quality arm , I'm in . But the notion that we need to stock the farm with a few castoffs in case of emergency borders on hoarding disorder. Use Pawtucket to develop guys with a future , not a ( mediocre ) past.
  12. I think the plan is to avoid signing mediocre has beens for stand by duty at Pawtucket. Seems like a good plan .
  13. " Inexpensive depth guys " is a euphemism for " veteran ham and egger ."
  14. Will the Seattle Mariners represent the A.L. in the World Series for the first time ever ? Could happen. But I doubt it.
  15. Harm , Any word from Marcel on the Mariners chances of finishing better than third in the AL West this year ?
  16. I guess any team , or any business for that matter , could say that things are looking promising if all , or most , of our employees can perform better this year than they did last year. Hey , sometimes it happens.
  17. A good manager/supervisor/boss can make a difference in the performance of the employees in his/her charge. This is true in baseball , as it is in everything.
  18. The leadership should come from the leader. That would be the manager. Hopefully , Cora will bring the energy , enthusiasm and excitement that Farrell apparently had lost. I would think that was the reasoning behind the change in managers. And , hopefully , that will result in a better attitude and performance from the players. That is what I am expecting.
  19. Three things: 1 - This team definitely has talent. Whether it has enough talent at present to beat the top teams in 2018 in questionable. 2 - They clearly can use a power bat in the middle of the lineup . If not J.D. Martinez , then who. 3 - Cora needs to be a major improvement over Farrell . To underestimate the importance of management and leadership is a mistake. Martinez or no Martinez , it is Cora who can make the difference .
  20. Theo's strength was never ponying up big money for guys like Darvish......................................................................He just did.
  21. I feel pretty much the same. 1978 was devastating , and 1986 made me think that it was never going to happen. But 2004 changed all that. And 2007 and 2013 took any remaining anxiety away. I feel confident the Sox will win it all again , but the sense of urgency is no longer there. I think they will sign Martinez or else make another strong move , but I am not stressing over it . It will be a fun season regardless.
  22. It's a tough world. Money talks. Dempster was a fool to walk away from that much money. You can give him all the kudos you want , he was still a fool.
  23. Bells , You mean , " Turn out the lights , the party's over ? "
  24. The whole thing is crazy. Billionaire owners . Millionaire players. Millionaire commissioners. Revenue sharing. Luxury taxes . Lawyers , agents , etc. How does the average person relate to all of this ? We love the game and pull for our team. Most of us have played the game at some level. But how can we relate to the business side of it all ? Why do we put up with the outrageous ticket prices , parking , concessions , cable and dish fees , etc. ? It is actually funny to hear fans debating that so and so is worth 20 million a year for five years , but certainly not 21 million a year for six years. Too much.
