  1. A bicycle tour of vineyards in Chile ? What ?
  2. A team trading for Machado now would most likely want a window to sign him long term . Would Machado be open to that ?Doubtful , but maybe for the Yankees he might. I just don't see it happening. We may be getting paranoid now.
  3. 1- Sox sign Martinez. 2- Folks on here scream that we overpaid. Curse out Boras . 3 - Martinez out homers Stanton in 2018. 4 - Folks here scream about the future. Curse out Dombrowski. And so it goes.
  4. Yeah. It seems crazy , but that is how it is. Sometimes people will even forego spending on seemingly more important things in order to have money for entertainment. I guess if it means that much to your happiness , then it is worth it. But we need to remember that baseball players , and all professional athletes , are part of the entertainment industry. It is not the least bit surprising that a guy like Stanton would sign with the Yankees. Meanwhile , Sox fans are glum and cursing , while Yankee fans are ecstatic. All of that could change before too long.
  5. Okay. It just seemed to me that Ellsbury was playing very well after he got healthy. Hicks was having a good season before he got hurt , but his overall career has been mediocre at best. I thought the Yankees would have had a better shot in the playoffs with Ellsbury in the lineup. But I don't follow the Yankees that closely , so I defer to your opinion. I do think trading Ellsbury without eating much of his salary will be difficult to do. But that is always the problem with big , long term contracts. Maybe someday the Yankees will regret the Stanton deal. Who knows?
  6. The Yankees obviously now have a glut of outfielders , with Frazier waiting in the wings. The obvious move would be to trade Ellsbury. But trading him ( pretty much giving him away ) while eating much of his salary does not sound very smart. And the no trade clause complicates things. Is there a west coast team in need of a centerfielder that could be a match ? I don't know. Personally , I thought Girardi made a mistake in benching Ellsbury in favor of Hicks in the post season. Hicks contributed little , and it might have made the difference. Anyways , having too many good players is not such a bad problem to have. The Yankees are no doubt the winter book favorites to win the division , if not the whole thing.
  7. No matter how much we hear about baseball being a business , we still seem to forget it. It really is a business . A business that is very profitable for the owners , executives , players , agents , etc. We fans pay the freight for it all. We say nonsensical things like " I hope " we " don't overpay for so and so. " What fools we can be. We take out our anger and frustration by venting in stadiums , at home and in forums such as this. We call them names like "scumbags " . But we always come back for more. Professional athletes are part of the entertainment industry. Just like those Hollywood Prima donnas . Of course they are overpaid egotists. But we are the ones who feed their overpaid egos. Please spare me/us the outrage over a guy like Stanton signing with the Yankees. That is the way it goes. Get over it. P.T. Barnum said , " There's a sucker born every minute " . How true. And we are the suckers. But we seem to love it.
  8. Not the end of the world. Just one more case of the Yankees being the Yankees. That is what makes it so challenging to beat them. And so gratifying when you do.
  9. It is never surprising when an athlete in any sport wants to play in New York. New York is the most famous city in the world. It is the business capital of the world. The financial capital of the world. The advertising capital of the world. And ( outside of Hollywood ) the entertainment capital of the world. The money , fame and opportunities there are unmatched anywhere. We don't have to like it , but it is the reality.
  10. The purpose of having a farm is to harvest it and bring the crops to market to see what you can get for them. Then you can always replant.
  11. Exactly. Last season I noticed saves being blown almost on a nightly basis all around baseball. I thought how fortunate we were to have Kimbrel. There is no way we win the division with a Clippard or KRod as closer. As far as him being overpaid , that is just the way it is in MLB these days. Most players are overpaid , some by a lot . I don't see any owners going broke. Some fans are too hung up on the concept of " Moneyball " and fantasy leagues. MLB is big business. And closers are a vital part of winning baseball.
  12. Some of the more analytic minded fans have their trendy idea that closers are overrated. I don't think many in baseball would agree. Moon , I remember you bemoaning the Kimbrel deal , and saying we should have held on to those rather marginal prospects and acquired KRod or Clippard to serve as closer. How would that have worked out ? The fact is , without Sale and Kimbrel there would not have been much to be excited about this past season.
  13. If he is reluctant to play in a big market , you are probably better off without him.
  14. Dombrowski takes over a team that had back to back , dismal last place finishes. Rebuilds a pitching staff that had more ham and eggers than Mom's Diner . Survives the retirement of David Ortiz. Wins back to back A.L. East titles. Gets rid of Farrell. Hires the coveted Alex Cora. Now looks to add some punch to the lineup in an attempt to put the team over the top. ......... The thanks he gets : " D.D. blew up the farm , we are doomed ". Go figure. Cherington nostalgia running wild.
  15. Some fans are content to have a team that is basically trash as long as they can say " The future looks bright " . And that's okay. That is how they follow and enjoy the game. I get it. Ben Cherington is their patron saint. They miss him. I have no problem with that. I am not a deep thinker or an analytical guru , but it seems to me that baseball has a long season and it is preferable to have a contending team to root for each and every year. I do think the Red Sox have the means to provide that. I leave it to others to worry about the bridge years , cliffs , impending hurricanes and five year plans. So be it.
  16. I would be very surprised if there was a GM in baseball that did not prefer Benintendi over JBJ.
  17. . That might actually make a good song lyric. " The Sox go off the cliff like a redneck in a hurricane. " It might not be the best analogy , since " rednecks " have not been the main victims of hurricanes in recent years , but at least it is acceptable , as " rednecks " are one of the few groups that it is okay to take shots at. Amen.
  18. Harm , You know what they say about the early bird............
  19. The Cooler.
  20. No , you have young players too. Making much less. The occasional bargain aisle fill in is fine. Just don't try to build a winner like that.
  21. Exactly. The bargain aisle is mainly for teams that lack the budget. While you may find the occasional good deal , you will mostly get junk. ( You can get junk in the high priced aisle too if you are not careful ) I realize that you are an astute bargain aisle shopper , but it should be used only for temporary fixes , not to build a championship team. And definitely do not buy anything that says " As Seen On TV " .
  22. I think people sometimes confuse fantasy baseball with the reality of baseball as a sport/business. A " bang for your buck " may sound good , but when payrolls vary greatly , it is not enough. You want to build a championship caliber team. You don't shop in the bargain aisle.
  23. Some people like to focus on the negative. It's just the way they are. It does not necessarily mean they are not good fans. As for me , when you take over a last place team and win the division two straight years , I don't think there is much reason to complain. Of course we all know that promising prospects were dealt , but quality players were obtained in return. I would say that , at least for now , Dombrowski has done a good job.
  24. We do need a backup second baseman. I understand he was on the short list.
  25. If is just about taking the full contract , I think a number of teams would be interested . The team that offers the most in talent will probably be the team that gets him , assuming Stanton is okay with it.
