  1. No matter how many times we hear that Major League Baseball is a business , we still tend to forget it at times. But it really is a business , and a lucrative one at that. And everybody wants in on the money. Boras is not the devil. He is just one of the more successful operatives in the business. John Henry is a billionaire. More power to him as well. Fans get upset and blame Boras if we don't get the player we want at the price we want to pay. As fans ,we keep forgetting that it is a business to the owners , players and agents . They may fight over the money. We are not in on the profits. We pay the freight for it all. That is how it is. Boras is just doing his job. Baseball is a business. A part of the larger entertainment industry. There are many agents involved in the industry. They work for their clients , not for us.We choose to buy the product. We don't have to , but we do.
  2. Another example of how insane things are in MLB. The Mets settled with Matt Harvey for what was described as a "meager raise" of $ 500,000.00 . Half million bucks for a guy who did absolutely nothing to deserve a raise of any kind. You just can't compare baseball money to what most people deal with in everyday life. It is an entirely different world.
  3. Ballplayers have a unique situation. They have a union and the collective bargaining benefits that go with it. Plus they have agents that negotiate their own personal contracts. Pretty good deal . We know that most of them are overpaid , some by a lot. But we generally do not begrudge them this situation , because the owners are not exactly sympathetic figures. So , we willingly pay the price in tickets , concessions , merchandise , TV sports packages , etc. to follow and cheer them. We do need someone to blame , so Boras is a handy target. But he really is just a part of the system. And a very successful one at that.
  4. When you get lawyers and agents involved in sports ( or anything else for that matter ) , this is what happens. Boras is just doing what he does , what he always has done , what he is very good at and what has made him rich and famous. His loyalty is to his clients and his business , not to the teams and certainly not to the fans. Fortunately , the Sox have the means to deal with the reality of this and to be successful .
  5. At least the Red Sox and Yankees have not sold naming rights to the ballparks. We might be looking at Prudential Park and JP Morgan Chase Stadium.
  6. The Fenway home run haven argument is based on the short distance in left field. The problem with this is the height of the " Green Monster ". Right handed hitters who lift the ball can benefit. But line drive type hitters will actually lose home runs. This is pretty much common knowledge by now. The famous " short porch " in right at Yankee Stadium has always led to the Yankees looking for left handed pull hitters. They had much success with this. But the shifts employed in recent years have hurt the batting averages of these type of hitters. Now , we see the Yankees becoming more right hand oriented. The bottom line is that you want to build a versatile team. A team with on base percentage , power and speed. Baseball is probably the only major sport without a uniform playing field. But you can make a mistake by trying to tailor your team to your own park. Put together a good , well balanced lineup . Don't just look for someone who can hit it over the " Monster ".
  7. If three or four ticket sales are worth the difference in salaries between Bruce and Darvish , then I can say with absolute certainty that you are right . I would rather have Darvish , Bruce is not on my wish list. But Darvish is not the kind of signing that will promote ticket sales. Not in the least.
  8. I would like to see the Sox acquire Darvish , even if they do sign Martinez, but especially if they fail to do so. However , to say that acquiring Darvish would promote ticket sales is questionable , to say the least. It would have little to no effect on ticket sales.
  9. Chris Archer is a good pitcher. He is not a great one. We have seen how the Sox have hammered him. You do not trade a young , every day player with the upside of Benintendi for Chris Archer. No way. I think our boredom and anxiety so far this hot stove season is causing some irrational thinking. We surely would like to have J.D. Martinez , a top starting pitcher and , possibly , Nunez. But we should not make a dumb move like giving up Benintendi. Forget it.
  10. Looks like the Orioles , Rays and Blue Jays have pretty much given up trying to compete in the East. Let's hope MLB does not become like the NBA , where you have a handful of top teams , and the rest are basically trash.
  11. So we could harvest it for Longoria instead of wasting it on the likes of Sale and Kimbrel ?
  12. To some fans , WAR and UZR are valuable tools , except when they disagree with one's personal opinion and/or eye test. Also , it is obvious that objectivity is a lost art. Many of us , for one reason or another , have our particular favorites and our particular whipping boys. Our favorites can do no wrong , and the whipping boys can do no right , no matter what the stats may show. Let's hope Dombrowski , and all Sox management , stay objective and results oriented. That is key to success.
  13. Exactly. We don't have to be like one of the small market , small time Charlies still trying to win with " Moneyball " and looking for the next Scott Hatteburg. I never understood Sox fans worrying about the payroll all the time , then crying when the Yankees " bought the pennant ." I'm pretty sure the Steinbrenners are no wealthier than most of the other owners. I'm not asking for too much here. Just sign Martinez and a top free agent starting pitcher , and we should be able to keep up with the Yankees.
  14. I'm not saying the money doesn't matter at all. Of course it does. Just saying that , since we signed Moreland instead of a more expensive option , we should be able to spring for Martinez and a free agent starting pitcher without busting John Henry's budget. The great thing about a franchise like the Red Sox is that they can overcome the occasional blunder like Sandoval. You can't be afraid to spend what it takes to build a championship caliber team because of a past mistake. This is a big time team in a big time , expensive business. Insane contracts are everywhere , but the teams are still very profitable. And worth more and more all the time. No need for us to sweat the spending.
  15. JBJ seems to be a guy that people feel strongly about , one way or the other. Objectively , he is a pretty good overall player who definitely has some trade value. However , if you think you are going to get a top notch starting pitcher for him , you are going to be disappointed. You would have to part with Benintendi to get that kind of return . Obviously , we are not going to do that. The best thing might be to keep JBJ , sign Martinez to DH and play some outfield , and platoon Moreland and Hanley at first . Reserves could be Brentz , Swihart and one of Holt , Lin or Marrero. Then , look at the free agent starting pitchers. Get a good one and the team will be set to start the season. ( And , PLEASE stop worrying about the money. )
  16. It is now clear that if Martinez is signed , one outfielder has to go. Most likely JBJ. Personally , I don't think JBJ will bring back a pitcher that would be of much help. To get that , you might have to part with Benintendi instead. I don't see that happening. The only other possibility would be to somehow unload Hanley to make room at DH for J.D. That won't be easy to do , and even if you did , you would basically have last year's team with J.D. at DH instead of Hanley. Would that be enough of an improvement , considering what the opposition has done ?
  17. People are getting too antsy. Be patient. Patience is a virtue. This team does not need a complete overhaul. A slight improvement over last year will do. It will happen.
  18. Amusing to read about the Yankees " problems " . " We have too many players . And we still have money to spend. What should we do now ? " Everyone should have " problems " like that.
  19. A young boy on Christmas morning : ( Many " Moons " ago ) A new bike ? A G.I. Joe ? Lincoln logs ? That's all ? I think I'm going to puke.
  20. Martinez would supply the power. I see nothing wrong with signing them both. It would be a very good lineup , top to bottom.
  21. I'm not getting the dislike for Hosmer on here. He is a good first baseman , good hitter with some pop ,some speed and , seemingly , a good guy. A durable player , who appears to be entering his prime. Is it the money that is the problem ? Not to worry. John Henry has plenty of it. I say , sign Martinez and , if possible , Hosmer. Trade JBJ , unless you can get lucky and somehow move Hanley. Then get a top starting pitcher and a lefty for the pen. All set to battle the Yankees for dominance.
  22. I think the top priority now should be signing Martinez. Being that he is in demand , it will require an " overpay ". ( Hate Boras if you must , but he is the best in the business at what he does .) If you feel that Martinez / Hanley can handle first base / DH , you can then look to upgrade the pitching. Otherwise , Martinez plays left field , and JBJ is dealt in an effort to find a hard hitting first baseman and / or pitching help. ( We all know the list of first base candidates by now ). Signing a free agent first baseman , in addition to Martinez , would be expensive . But it all starts by signing JD Martinez. Get that done before someone beats you to the punch.
  23. It seems to me that the occasional political zinger is permissible on here , as long as it comes in from the left , so to speak. Personally , I think all political comments should be discouraged. Both right and left. We have seen what they have done to other forums when permitted to run wild.
  24. Harm , Excellent. Sounds like you have an interesting life. Enjoy.
