  1. I think Cora is a good manager. It's true he had a great team when he won it all in 2018, but it still counts. A poor manager can screw up even a great team. The last few years have not been good, but I think Cora has gotten all that could be expected out of what he has had to work with. I would say he compares favorably to recent Sox managers. Of course Francona will always get recognition for being at the helm when the curse was broken.
  2. Unusual situation last night. There were Sox fans rooting for the Yankees to win their game, while Yankee fans were rooting for the Sox to win their game. You don't see that too often. Tonight, it's back to the rivalry.
  3. The 2013 Red Sox were a very good team. In addition to that, the terrorist bombing at the Boston Marathon and the subsequent Boston Strong movement were a real motivating force. The team was on a mission and had an all consuming will to win. And win they did.
  4. Yes. A lot of factors go into putting together a winning team. With the Sox, and everything else being the same as it is, I think just having a better bullpen would have made a big difference.
  5. One step forward. One step back. Don't seem to be getting anywhere.
  6. Somebody dropped the ball there, whether it was Devers or someone else. You should not keep people waiting for an hour for an interview that is not going to happen.
  7. That trade would be grounds for terminating Breslow on the spot.
  8. The Sox have a real chance at the wild card. They actually have more talent than the other contenders. But this is artificially created excitement, courtesy of MLB. A bunch of basically mediocre teams fighting for a hokey third wild card.
  9. Sure . No stat is perfect. They all have flaws. Here is an extreme example: Pitcher A gives up a leadoff double, walks the next two batters, then gets a strikeout, then a double play ball. His WHIP is 3.00 . But his ERA is O.OO. Pitcher B strikes out the first two batters. Then gives up a home run. Then, another strikeout. His WHIP is 1.00 . But his ERA is 9.00. There are so many metrics you can look at if you want to. I am just not interested in it. Just trying to keep it as simple as possible while realizing that it is a team game and all pitchers depend on the fielders.
  10. I know. There are a million variables. You could study it all and go on all day about it. How many great plays prevented runs from scoring ? How many errors could have been scored as hits and vice versa ? Stolen bases. Good baserunning or bad baserunning. What was the catch probability ? And so forth and so on. I just try to keep it simple. The whole object of any game is to score more runs than you give up. Do that and you win the game. Win enough games and you have a parade.
  11. The Yankees do have a clear edge over the Sox in team ERA, 3.80 to 4.17. There are many different stats you can choose to measure a pitching staff. Choose whichever you like. I prefer ERA to WHIP simply because games are decided by runs scored , not the number of baserunners. A baserunner who doesn't score is soon forgotten. I don't have any desire to delve into the more advanced stats involving +,- or x , etc. Keeping it simple, the team who allows fewer runs to score wins the game.
  12. The Mariners, Tigers and even the deadline seller Rays are also very much in the wild card hunt. It's a regular battle royal. A reminder that ,in the event of ties, there are various tiebreakers in place. There is no longer a play-in game.
  13. Severino is 10-6 with a 3.84 ERA. Not great, but not a flop either. If you had an entire rotation with that performance, you would be in pretty good shape . Provided you also had a good bullpen.
  14. Really needed a sweep of the ChiSox. Two out of three was not good enough. It will be a critical series with the Orioles. The Sox are reaching desperation mode at this point. They have to get hot now or it will be all over. The Orioles have a multitude of problems themselves. They have not been playing well at all. They are definitely beatable. After this series, it will be four in the Bronx. It is now or never territory.
  15. I think too much has been made of the need for an " ace ". A "top of the rotation" guy. There is no such thing as top of the rotation. There is only a rotation. Numbering your starters, one through five is meaningless. And there is no one out there who is all that great anyway. Skubal is not likely to be available. Burnes is good, but not great. Certainly not the over-hyped Crochet. Sale is the one who got away. What you want is a good five-man rotation, with some back up depth. Most importantly, you want a good and deep bullpen. That is where so many games are won or lost. That needs to be a priority.
  16. N.D. was highly overrated at #5. They are not on the level of the top teams. Riley Leonard is a nice kid, but he doesn't look like a big-time quarterback. Marcus Freeman is a good guy, loved by his players, but he did not have them ready to play yesterday. The blocking and tackling were very weak. It wasn't a fluke loss. They were outplayed.
  17. Why pick 2019 as the starting point ? And 2023 as the end point ? Sale is a proven winner over his career. Crochet is not even remotely in his class. Not even worth discussing.
  18. Garrett Crochet gets an awful lot of attention for a guy who is 9-17 for his career. I know, I know, wins don't matter. Maybe that's a good thing because this guy has not been a winner. Is anyone still weeping because the Sox didn't sign " Monty" last winter ?
  19. The Sale for Grissom trade was a monumental blunder. We need to stop trying to rationalize it and justify it. It's a done deal. Just admit it was stupid and move on.
  20. Can't take anything for granted. The White Sox did win one game against Baltimore. But anything less than a sweep here would be very disappointing.
  21. None of that matters. The only objective now is to win the third wild card. That is still possible because the other contenders are not very good either.
  22. The Mariners, Rays and Tigers are all in the race now, largely due to the the Sox, Royals and Twins struggles. A wild card battle royal, if you will.
  23. The Mets look like a really good team. Much improved from earlier in the season. If they can reach the post season, they will be very dangerous.
  24. MLB is part of the larger entertainment industry. Baseball owners , for the most part, are as greedy as anyone else. That is why they hire a Ron Manfred for Commissioner. He doesn't know a sweeper from a Fenway janitor. But he knows how to maximize their profits. There is nothing remotely likable about him. Or about John Henry, for that matter. Baseball fans can choose how much they are willing to spend for this entertainment. And they certainly have a right to complain when they feel they are watching a substandard product.
