The contract predictions for Lucas Giolito were all over the place. MLB Trade Rumors had Giolito at two years, $44 million; The Athletic two years, $24 million with opt out after first year; FanGraphs columnist Ben Clemens four years, $60 million; and FanGraphs crowdsource two years, $30 million. The Red Sox did OK.

A fair-value offer is unlikely to land one year of Corbin Burnes. Given the current market for starting pitching, the best offer for Burnes should easily exceed fair value as measured by some contemporary metrics. However, the market will ultimately set the price if the Brewers trade Burnes. -

Much has been written about the strength of Seattle's pitching but this year the Mariners' core up-the-middle trio of Cal Raleigh, J.P. Crawford and Julio Rodriguez combined for 15.5 fWAR, more than all Red Sox position players combined (13.6). Regression may await a Seattle lineup that appears out of balance.

FWIW Luis Castillo is guaranteed $91 million over four seasons with a $25 million vesting option for a fifth season. Castillo's $7 million signing bonus was paid within 60 days of the contract's approval but is spread across the life of the contract for luxury tax purposes. The Red Sox and Mariners probably do not match up in a trade.

Free agents pitchers find Seattle more attractive than free agent hitters so. The Mariners would likely trade Luis Castiilo only for a prearb impact bat to free up payroll to sign a free agent pitcher. Think an interesting trade centered on Cincinnati third baseman Noelvi Marte. BTW Castillo's contract, which has a no-trade clause, guarantees just $91 million over four years with a $25 million vesting option for as fifth year.

This year the Red Sox got only a combined 13.6 fWAR from their position players, and that total included 5.1 fWAR from the departed Alex Verdugo, Adam Duvall and Justin Turner. Yet focus is on the starting rotation. The Sox have holes to fill.

Steamer projects Castillo, Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery -- who were all born the same month -- with 2024 WAR of 3.4, 3.3 and 3.2, respectively: https://www.fangraphs.com/projections?pos=&stats=pit&type=steamer Aaron Nola, who is six months younger than the trio, is projected with a 2024 WAR of 4.2 after signing for seven years and $172 million. Castiilo is guaranteed $91 million over four years with a 2028 vesting option that could bring the total to $116 million over five years. The contracts for Snell and Montgomery should impact Castillo's trade value.
