On Tuesday the Mariners will face righthander Connor Phillips, their 2020 second-round draft pick out of a community college. Phillips will make his MLB debut with the Cincinnati Reds, who acquired Phillips and others in the March 2022 trade of Eugenio Suarez and Jesse Winker. This year the Reds have also gotten 19 starts (and an ERA+ of 110) from lefthander Brandon Williamson, the Mariners' 2019 second-round draft pick out of Texas Christian University, who was also included in the Suarez/Winker trade.

Righthander Bryan Woo is a bit of a unicorn. Woo had an ERA of 6.36 over only 69.1 innings in college before the Seattle Mariners took him in the sixth round of the 2021 draft. Woo had posted an ERA of 6.11 over 28 innings in his final season at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, before undergoing Tommy John surgery. Woo made his professional debut just 15 months ago and pitched only 101 minor league innings before his call up to the Mariners. Seattle broadcaster Aaron Goldsmith said someone in the Mariner braintrust thought Woo should be the top pick of the 2021 draft. That's evidence that MLB front offices have far more information than we fans do. BTW the development of Logan Gilbert and George Kirby was slowed by the cancellation of the 2020 minor league season.

At MLB Pipeline Emerson Hancock is the only pitcher ranked among Seattle’s Top 10 prospects. Three of the top four prospects (and five of 10) are position players drafted out of high school.

The $72 million left on Masataka Yoshida’s contract nearly matches up with the $73 million remaining on the contract of the 2021 AL Cy Young Award winner. Each team has needs.😁😁😁

That's precisely why Masataka Yoshida would bring back far less in a trade. The potential trade partner would rather spend that money elsewhere.

Corey Kluber with his $10 million salary has been disappointing but Seattle’s $180.5 million payroll includes $21 million for 2021 Cy Young winner Robbie Ray and another $6.75 million for fellow lefthander Marco Gonzales. Ray and Gonzales are out for the season after combining for fewer innings (3.1 and 50) than Kluber (55) this season.

Near the trade deadline the Seattle Mariners received infielder Josh Rojas, outfielder Dominic Canzone and infield prospect Ryan Bliss for a year and two months of 33-year-old closer Paul Sewald, who had posted 1.0 fWAR in 45 games covering 43 innings this year up to the day of the trade. So far this season 37-year-old reliever Chris Martin has posted 1.0 fWAR in 44 appearances covering 41 inning as the righthander approaches free agency in October.
