  1. Baseball can be random. Luke Raley ignited the Seattle comeback with the broken-bat bloop single that barely stayed fair. Luis Urias followed with the hardest-hit ball of the night, lining out sharply to second baseman Enmanuel Valdez.
  2. Kutter Crawford still has not surrendered an earned run in 16 career innings at T-Mobile Park.
  3. And George Kirby did not make his MLB debut until May 8, 2022.
  4. Righthander Kutter Crawford, the Red Sox starter on Saturday, has pitched 10 shutout innings over his two career starts at T-Mobile Park (five hits, five walks, 12 strikeouts): https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SEA/SEA202206120.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SEA/SEA202308020.shtml Just by chance, this poster attended both afternoon games.
  5. This Mariner fan has Nick Pivetta and George Kirby (and J.P. Crawford) in his fantasy lineup tonight.
  6. Last season 26-year-old Isaiah Campbell was good enough to be on the bullpen shuttle between Seattle and Double A Arkansas. That's not without value. Promising 23-year-old Vaughn Grissom could well match the 2.1 and 2.3 fWAR that Luis Urias posted in his age 24 and 25 seasons.
  7. This Mariner fan liked the Luis Urias trade for both teams. An analytics guy in the Mariner front office compares the 26-year-old Urias with J.P. Crawford, another former top prospect who got off to a slow start in his MLB career.
  8. Tyler O'Neill will play in the MLB venue closest to his hometown against the team that selected O'Neill in the third round of the 2013 draft out of Garibaldi Secondary School in Maple Ridge, British Columbia: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/oneilty01.shtml Friday evening the Red Sox are expected to send another British Columbian, Nick Pivetta, to the mound against the Seattle Mariners: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pivetni01.shtml Who was the last player from British Columbia to be named to an All Star team as a Boston Red Sox? How many British Columbians played for the Red Sox last year?
  9. Shortly after the 2022 season opener the Red Sox announced a four-year extension for Garrett Whitlock: https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-red-sox/2022/04/10/garrett-whitlock-red-sox-agree-to-contract-extension-details-mlb-free-agency-news-rumors/?amp=1
  10. FanGraphs' Roster Resource offers only minor adjustments: https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/depth-charts/red-sox
  11. Ouch! :D:D This fan of another AL West team hopes to be there to watch the reigning World Series champion Texas Rangers.
  12. The A's have a rare traditional doubleheader May 8 at the Oakand Coliseum ... and this poster has tentative plans to be there. Oakland Athletics Schedule | Oakland Athletics WWW.MLB.COM The Official Site of Major League Baseball
  13. The Lucas Giolito injury may make the Red Sox more interested in Jordan Montgomery, but will Montgomery, who last played for the World Series champion, now be less interested in the faltering Red Sox?
  14. Perhaps top free agents are pushing back against increasingly wealthy owners.
  15. For example, Seattle looks to replace the 3.2 fWAR posted in 162 games last year by third baseman Eugenio Suarez, whom the Mariners traded to the Diamondbacks in November. Enter third baseman Luis Urias, whom the Mariners acquired in a trade with the Red Sox. ZiPS projects Urias with 2.0 WAR in 119 games but projects Suarez with 1.3 WAR in 136 games. Did the Mariners downgrade? Urias is expected to platoon with Josh Rojas at third base.
  16. This poster has tentative plans to watch the reigning World Series champion Texas Rangers play a scheduled (!) doubleheader in Oakland this May. The second game may be skipped. The same 12-day trip tentatively includes three San Francisco Giant games, one Cal baseball game and one University of San Francisco baseball game. Plus commencement ceremonies for two daughters.
  17. In 2019 the reigning World Series champion Red Sox opened the season 2-6 with four games at Seattle and four games at Oakland: https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BOS/2019-schedule-scores.shtml ... and 3-8 after three more games at Arizona. In 2019 this poster attended the Sunday game in Seattle but can't find anyone to attend this year's Red Sox game in Seattle on Sunday, March 31.
  18. This poster likes his daughter’s neighborhood in Oakland. I’ve walked all the way up to Berkeley without worry.
  19. FWIW FanGraphs gives the Texas Rangers a 1.7 percent chance of repeating as World Series champions while giving the Red Sox a 1.3 percent chance of winning the 2024 World Series: https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds The Rangers are assigned a 36.4 percent chance of advancing to the postseason and a 10.7 percent chance of winning the AL West. The Red Sox are projected with an 82-80 record, a 29.2 percent chance of earning a postseason slot and a 7.0 percent chance of winning the AL East.
  20. An analogy may be drawn with the choice between socially conscious investments and investments that provide the highest rate of return. The goals of winning and being socially conscious may be honorable but the bottom line often carries the day.
  21. Because they had overspent on free agents the Arizona Diamondbacks declared bankruptcy one year after winning the 2001 World Series, according to the textbook in my current Sports Finance course.
  22. Veteran left hander Tommy Milone is still available (and looked solid in a start this poster witnessed last July): https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/milonto01.shtml MLB Gameday: Mariners 0, Giants 2 Final Score (07/05/2023) | MLB.com WWW.MLB.COM Follow MLB results with FREE box scores, pitch-by-pitch strikezone info, and Statcast data for Mariners vs. Giants at Oracle Park
  23. Columnist Brittany Ghiroli at The Athletic offers her take with "The Red Sox need to get their message straight": https://theathletic.com/5222001/2024/01/24/red-sox-craig-breslow-tom-werner-messaging/ Subscription required but the headline provides the gist. The lede:
  24. Alex Wood would give the Red Sox a lefty candidate for the starting rotation: https://www.fangraphs.com/players/alex-wood/13781/stats?position=P
  25. Honorable parties to contract negotiations don't leak offers to the media. "These guys" may have numerous offers and the agent may be quietly playing the suitors against each other. Or not. A high-performing stock portfolio may have a stock or two that underperform. Likewise, Scott Boras clientele should do well in the aggregate even if one or two fall short.
