Last season 26-year-old Isaiah Campbell was good enough to be on the bullpen shuttle between Seattle and Double A Arkansas. That's not without value. Promising 23-year-old Vaughn Grissom could well match the 2.1 and 2.3 fWAR that Luis Urias posted in his age 24 and 25 seasons.

For example, Seattle looks to replace the 3.2 fWAR posted in 162 games last year by third baseman Eugenio Suarez, whom the Mariners traded to the Diamondbacks in November. Enter third baseman Luis Urias, whom the Mariners acquired in a trade with the Red Sox. ZiPS projects Urias with 2.0 WAR in 119 games but projects Suarez with 1.3 WAR in 136 games. Did the Mariners downgrade? Urias is expected to platoon with Josh Rojas at third base.

Honorable parties to contract negotiations don't leak offers to the media. "These guys" may have numerous offers and the agent may be quietly playing the suitors against each other. Or not. A high-performing stock portfolio may have a stock or two that underperform. Likewise, Scott Boras clientele should do well in the aggregate even if one or two fall short.
