  1. So ... Triston Casas, Wilyer Abreu and Masataka Yoshida for Bryce Miller, Mitch Haniger and Mitch Garver. The Red Sox would feel a luxury tax squeeze in 2025 but would get out from under Yoshida's contract through 2027. Despite his hitting woes, Garver has been serviceable in 17 games behind the plate this year. This is just silly. https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/yearly https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/yearly
  2. Despite this year's anomaly, since the start of the 2020 season the Seattle Mariners have a cumulative regular-season record of 359-313, 22 wins better than the Red Sox record of 337-333 (which includes 92 wins in 2021). The Red Sox should be commended for their surprising resurgence. As already suggested, Triston Casas could represent a marked upgrade for the Mariners.
  3. Despite this year's disappointments. Seattle is fairly well-positioned for the next few years. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1P55um0jB8gsz4M2Q7hFeD6aFki7n74DBC1tsWXwoD5U/edit?pli=1&gid=1520401900#gid=1520401900 The Mariners are unlikely to undergo a full rebuild by trading valuable assets for prospects. The M's are more likely to trade prospects for an established bat. Can the Red Sox manipulate the service time of Triston Casas to leave the first baseman short of two years at the end of this season? Would the Sox trade Casas for five years of Bryce Miller or Bryan Woo? The Mariners and Red Sox probably don't match up for a trade.
  4. harmony never compared Jarren Duran and Jarred Kelenic. It was worse: harmony preferred Taylor Trammell over Jarren Duran. Duran should be commended for far exceeding expectations after accumulating only 2.0 fWAR in 193 MLB games through his 27th birthday. FWIW Seattle is unlikely to trade Logan Gilbert or George Kirby, especially for a package headed by an unproven 20-year-old prospect. FanGraphs assigns Roman Anthony a Future Value of 55 with a projected 2026 WAR of 1.8 over 119 games in his age 22 season: https://www.fangraphs.com/players/roman-anthony/sa3020211/stats?position=OF
  5. Roman Anthony reportedly was scratched from the Portland Sea Dogs lineup today:
  6. The half inning should have ended scoreless after the fifth pitch to Abreu: MLB Gameday: Mariners 7, Red Sox 14 Final Score (07/29/2024) | MLB.com WWW.MLB.COM Follow MLB results with FREE box scores, pitch-by-pitch strikezone info, and Statcast data for Mariners vs. Red Sox at Fenway Park
  7. Strangely enough: Yes.
  8. Jerry Dipoto offered a different take on the Josh Hamilton contract: https://www.halosheaven.com/2015/9/29/9419083/angels-jerry-dipoto-mike-scioscia-hamilton-moreno
  9. Jerry Dipoto's job is likely safe despite the Seattle fans' persistent calls for the ax. In seven-plus years under Dipoto, the Mariners have posted MLB's 11th-best regular-season record at 669-629 (.515), including the eight-best record at 321-269 (.544) since the start of the 2021 season. in the eight seasons before Dipoto's arrival, the Mariners posted MLB's 29th-best record at 583-713 (.450). Since 2021 the Seattle payroll has ranked in the bottom half of Major League Baseball. The M's currently have a highly regarded farm system. Still, the Mariners have been nearly unwatchable this season (the mirror image of the upstart Red Sox). FWIW the Los Angeles Angels are on pace for their ninth-straight losing season since Dipoto's departure from Anaheim.
  10. From Twins Daily, a fan site for the Minnesota Twins: How Twins and Red Sox Could Match Up on an Edouard Julien Trade - Twins - Twins Daily TWINSDAILY.COM Maybe these two AL Wild Card leaders can help one another by trading from strengths to address a key shortcoming.
  11. How does Vaughn Grissom post a negative 0.7 fWAR (and a negative 23 wRC+) in only 13 games? https://www.fangraphs.com/players/vaughn-grissom/26031/stats?position=2B/SS Grissom should be an asset in the long run but those stats are mind-boggling.
  12. This poster looks forward to seeing the A's host the reigning World Series champion Texas Rangers in a rare scheduled doubleheader May 8 at the much-maligned Oakland Coliseum.
  13. FWIW the Seattle Mariners have posted seven straight quality starts but remain under .500 at 9-10, trailing the Red Sox. It's early.
  14. Seattle batters now lead the league with 45 strikeouts even though the Mariners’ offseason plan was to cut down on strikeouts by jettisoning Eugenio Suarez, Teoscar Hernandez and Jarred Kelenic. The Mariners hope to avoid the slow starts that have plagued the last three seasons. Over the past three years only seven of the other 29 MLB teams have won more regular-season games than Seattle but the Mariners have managed to land only one of the 34 available postseason berths over that period … their only appearance since 2001. Hats off to the Red Sox for their their successful season-opening trip to Seattle.
  15. The Red Sox and their fans should be satisfied with the trip to Seattle. On the flip side …
  16. That depends on many factors including how that batter has performed historically against a pitcher with a particular pitch mix.
  17. With the wealth of available data the concept of a “hot hitter” is outdated.
  18. It has been a good week to have George Kirby, Brayan Bello and Nick Pivetta in a fantasy lineup. We'll see how Bryce Miller does Sunday.
  19. Baseball can be random. Luke Raley ignited the Seattle comeback with the broken-bat bloop single that barely stayed fair. Luis Urias followed with the hardest-hit ball of the night, lining out sharply to second baseman Enmanuel Valdez.
  20. Kutter Crawford still has not surrendered an earned run in 16 career innings at T-Mobile Park.
  21. And George Kirby did not make his MLB debut until May 8, 2022.
  22. Righthander Kutter Crawford, the Red Sox starter on Saturday, has pitched 10 shutout innings over his two career starts at T-Mobile Park (five hits, five walks, 12 strikeouts): https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SEA/SEA202206120.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SEA/SEA202308020.shtml Just by chance, this poster attended both afternoon games.
  23. This Mariner fan has Nick Pivetta and George Kirby (and J.P. Crawford) in his fantasy lineup tonight.
  24. Last season 26-year-old Isaiah Campbell was good enough to be on the bullpen shuttle between Seattle and Double A Arkansas. That's not without value. Promising 23-year-old Vaughn Grissom could well match the 2.1 and 2.3 fWAR that Luis Urias posted in his age 24 and 25 seasons.
