The AL East and AL West were virtually even in head-to-head competition for eight regular seasons 2014-21 before the AL East dominated the AL West in the regular season the last two years with a 188-127 (.597) cumulative record in the head-to-head competition. Despite its regular-season domination, the AL East is 0-11 against the AL West the past two postseasons. Feel free to draw conclusions ... or no conclusion at all.

The Mariners have a recent history of rehabilitating relievers off the scrap heap, including Paul Sewald, who has four postseason saves this year ... for the Diamondbacks. Gabe Speier, Tayler Saucedo and Trevor Gott are other recent examples. Kaleb Ort may struggle ... or not.

The distant past indeed would have helped the AL East. Going back 17 seasons to include the 2007 Red Sox, the tally would be AL East 6, AL Central 4 and AL West 7. Going back 12 seasons the tally would be AL East 3, AL Central 4 and AL West 5. At six years the tally is AL East 2 and AL West 4 (with sign-stealing clouds looming over two franchises).

Do four years provide an adequate sample to draw conclusions? Despite a 92-win club that fell two victories shy of the World Series in 2021, over the last four (or 3+) regular seasons only 10 of 30 MLB clubs posted poorer cumulative records than the Red Sox. The Sox face challenges rebounding from their losing record over that span. The Boston Red Sox are rarely dull to the outsider.
