  1. At the trade deadline in 2022 the Red Sox were 52-52, tied with the White Sox at .500 for the ninth-best record in the league, three games behind the final Wild Card slot: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/?date=2022-08-01 At the time FanGraphs gave the Red Sox a 28.8 percent chance of advancing to the postseason: https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds?date=2022-08-01&dateDelta=
  2. MLB Trade Rumors offers its take on the Red Sox offseason: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/10/offseason-outlook-boston-red-sox-13.html
  3. This year that Red Sox ranked 22nd in position player fWAR despite a near league-average wRC+ of 99: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2023&season1=2023&ind=0&team=0%2Cts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 The Red Sox were 20th in pitching fWAR: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2023&season1=2023&ind=0&team=0%2Cts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 The Sox have room for improvement in what should be an interesting offseason.
  4. Ken Williams and the 2005 Chicago White Sox.
  5. This poster already has Yuki Matsui (and Yoshinobu Yamamoto) on his keeper fantasy team.
  6. More on the Red Sox search for a top executive: https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2023/10/red-sox-targeting-world-series-winning-gm-but-complications-exist-too.html
  7. FWIW even with the record 22 games above .500 in 2021 the Red Sox have a losing cumulative regular-season record over the past four years.
  8. From Tuesday's MLB Trade Rumors (with a link within the link): "The Sox are also on the hunt for a GM but reporting indicates it’s not the most attractive job in the league, for various reasons." https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/10/the-opener-nlcs-alcs-ng.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/10/latest-on-red-sox-general-manager-search.html
  9. That opinion is unlikely to be unanimous among prospective candidates ... perhaps not even the majority opinion. But the Red Sox need only one.
  10. Kim Ng is available: https://www.overthemonster.com/platform/amp/2023/9/22/23885149/kim-ng-for-president-of-baseball-operations https://www.nbcsportsboston.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/marlins-kim-ng-red-sox-general-manager-candidate/554183/?amp=1
  11. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/10/quick-hits-red-sox-giants-lovullo-angels.html
  12. The AL East and AL West were virtually even in head-to-head competition for eight regular seasons 2014-21 before the AL East dominated the AL West in the regular season the last two years with a 188-127 (.597) cumulative record in the head-to-head competition. Despite its regular-season domination, the AL East is 0-11 against the AL West the past two postseasons. Feel free to draw conclusions ... or no conclusion at all.
  13. How many franchises would hire a 68-year-old intern? Perhaps there's a chance for a 68-year-old who returned to college this fall to study the business of sports.
  14. The Mariners have a recent history of rehabilitating relievers off the scrap heap, including Paul Sewald, who has four postseason saves this year ... for the Diamondbacks. Gabe Speier, Tayler Saucedo and Trevor Gott are other recent examples. Kaleb Ort may struggle ... or not.
  15. The distant past indeed would have helped the AL East. Going back 17 seasons to include the 2007 Red Sox, the tally would be AL East 6, AL Central 4 and AL West 7. Going back 12 seasons the tally would be AL East 3, AL Central 4 and AL West 5. At six years the tally is AL East 2 and AL West 4 (with sign-stealing clouds looming over two franchises).
  16. Over the past 14 seasons the American League has been represented in the World Series by an AL East team three times, an AL Central team four times and an AL West team seven times. At what point are samples large enough to draw conclusions?
  17. This year rhe Red Sox won as many postseason games as the Orioles, Rays and Blue Jays combined.
  18. This poster, who turned 68 on Sunday, may never see his favorite team in the World Series.🙁
  19. Do four years provide an adequate sample to draw conclusions? Despite a 92-win club that fell two victories shy of the World Series in 2021, over the last four (or 3+) regular seasons only 10 of 30 MLB clubs posted poorer cumulative records than the Red Sox. The Sox face challenges rebounding from their losing record over that span. The Boston Red Sox are rarely dull to the outsider.
  20. Does the MLB Trade Rumors list of projected arbitration salaries for the Red Sox have any non-tender candidates? Red Sox (5) Nick Pivetta (5.166): $6.9MM Alex Verdugo (5.078): $9.2MM Luis Urias (4.098): $4.7MM Reese McGuire (4.027): $1.7MM John Schreiber (3.027): $1.3MM https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/10/projected-arbitration-salaries-for-2024.html
  21. Indeed. Jerry Dipoto usually chooses his words more carefully.
  22. Is Boston an attractive destination for top free agents? Will a free agent view the Red Sox as potential contenders?
  23. FWIW the Rays and Blue Jays are 0-8 in the postseason over the past two years.
  24. That’s a revered role on any baseball forum.
  25. Except when the beloved contributor offers stats that place a Red Sox player in a positive light. Objectivity is a heavy cross to bear.😀
