  1. Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox and Teoscar Hernandez remain in negotiations but that no offer has been made: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/12/24/sports/red-sox-free-agency/ https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/red-sox-angels-reportedly-interested-in-teoscar-hernandez.html
  2. https://halohangout.com/posts/why-the-angels-have-an-advantage-over-the-red-sox-for-this-free-agent-slugger
  3. Just today this poster thought Seattle should pursue James Paxton if the Mariners trade a starter for an impact bat.
  4. The Red Sox could use Luis Urias, whom this poster was high on after each of his trades to the Sox and the Mariners. Urias comes with risks but an upside is there.
  5. The Red Sox reportedly are interested in lefthander James Paxton:
  6. Jonathan Papelbon responds to Alex Verdugo:
  7. Much has been written about the strength of Seattle's pitching but this year the Mariners' core up-the-middle trio of Cal Raleigh, J.P. Crawford and Julio Rodriguez combined for 15.5 fWAR, more than all Red Sox position players combined (13.6). Regression may await a Seattle lineup that appears out of balance.
  8. Alex Verdugo speaks out about the Red Sox and the offseason:
  9. FWIW Luis Castillo is guaranteed $91 million over four seasons with a $25 million vesting option for a fifth season. Castillo's $7 million signing bonus was paid within 60 days of the contract's approval but is spread across the life of the contract for luxury tax purposes. The Red Sox and Mariners probably do not match up in a trade.
  10. Free agents pitchers find Seattle more attractive than free agent hitters so. The Mariners would likely trade Luis Castiilo only for a prearb impact bat to free up payroll to sign a free agent pitcher. Think an interesting trade centered on Cincinnati third baseman Noelvi Marte. BTW Castillo's contract, which has a no-trade clause, guarantees just $91 million over four years with a $25 million vesting option for as fifth year.
  11. This year the Red Sox got only a combined 13.6 fWAR from their position players, and that total included 5.1 fWAR from the departed Alex Verdugo, Adam Duvall and Justin Turner. Yet focus is on the starting rotation. The Sox have holes to fill.
  12. Should the Red Sox be aiming to contend in 2024? Or do the obstacles appear too steep this offseason? In other words, should the Sox eschew the high-end market until they’re only a piece or two away from contention?
  13. MLB commentator Ken Rosenthal names the Red Sox the Dorks of the Week: At 16:30.
  14. At least the San Francisco Giants reportedly are swinging.
  15. Sunday's chat at MLB Trade Rumors has a poll on what team will have a "bigger offseason": the Red Sox or the Giants? https://live.jotcast.com/chat/mlbtr-live-chat-17248.html The early results have the Giants at 76 percent.
  16. Seattle may wait for the signings of top free agent starters sign before determining the trade value of Luis Castillo. Steamer projects Castillo, Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery -- who were all born the same month -- with 2024 WAR of 3.4, 3.3 and 3.2, respectively: https://www.fangraphs.com/projections?pos=&stats=pit&type=steamer Aaron Nola, who is six months younger than the trio, is projected with a 2024 WAR of 4.2 after signing for seven years and $172 million. Castiilo is guaranteed $91 million over four years with a 2028 vesting option that could bring the total to $116 million over five years. The contracts for Snell and Montgomery should impact Castillo's trade value.
  17. A Seattle podcast discusses a proposed Mariner trade for Jarren Duran: An astute Seattle fan posted some comps: https://www.marinertalk.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8790&p=274363#p274363
  18. Jon Lester and Blake Snell may be the best lefthanders to come out of the Puget Sound area. Snell bested Lester in a 2017 matchup: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/TBA/TBA201709200.shtml
  19. FanGraphs and Steamer project 27-year-old Jarren Duran with 2024 wRC+ and WAR of 98 and 1.3 in 128 games: https://www.fangraphs.com/players/jarren-duran/24617/stats?position=OF Duran this year finally posted a productive partial season after posting a negative 0.4 in each of the previous two years. Seattle is unlikely to have interest.
  20. In the unlikely event Luis Castillo is traded, Seattle would want an immediate impact bat with multiple years of team control. Kyle Teel's highest value comes at catcher where the Mariners have four more years of 27-year-old Cal Raleigh, who this year ranked third among all catchers with 4.7 fWAR (and third over the past two seasons at 8.8 fWAR).
  21. No one should defer to this poster's expertise. On anything.
  22. So would the Mariners but Luis Castillo could help Seattle land a productive bat (when free agent hitters are reluctant to sign with the M's).
  23. The Mariners might consider trading Luis Castillo to free up payroll to sign free agent lefthander Blake Snell, the Seattle native who reportedly wants to return home. Castillo has a no-trade clause.
  24. Traffic and parking are challenging but the immediate neighborhood of Oracle Park is not San Francisco's worst. I enjoy walking the 1.3 miles to the ballpark from the Ferry Building to the north. In May the Giants have a nine-game homestand -- including three games against Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers -- when I'll be in the Bay Area for my two daughters' commencements a week apart.
  25. Seattle may have some of the same perception issues (although Washington does not have a state income tax).
