    Shortly before the trade, there were many upset to find out the Sox had an offer for Sale’s entire contract with the Sox hetting essentially nothing, and there were folks upset that deal got turned down. And Grissom wasn’t complete unknown. He had debuted a couple years earlier for Atlanta at Fenway, and even hit his first MLB home run there. Atlanta’s issue was finding a place to play him. Hec wasn’t much for shortstop and they had Riley and Albies entrenched at 3b and 2b respectively. MLBTR even reported at the time the that the Braves “are counting on [Sale] as a third or even a fourth starter” while Grissom fills an immediate need for Boston at 2b.     Also lost in the A-Gon trade - the Sox got NOTHING back. Who was the best player that came back to Boston in that trade? Of the 5 players Boston received in that trade, three finished with career bWAR less than 0. Rubby de la Rosa finished with a whopping 1.8 bWAR for his career. But the real prize was James “Mediocrity” Loney and his 11.4 bWAR spread out over his 11 year career. That’s not much better than Connor Wong (4.2 bWAR in 6 seasons)…

    It turns out when offering one year of a $25mill superstar outfielder, most teams are forced to walk when you also have to take on a significant portion of the 3 remaining years of a broken down $93 pitcher. When the required throw-in is signed for more years and a higher AAV than the main piece, most teams will walk. Why overpay when you know that in Year 2, there is a good chance thr only part of that trade you still have is Price?

    Reportedly the 2019 trade involved Will Smith. The rapper-turned-actor, not the catcher. As bad as that Dodger offer was, the Padres was one even worse. Both offers could have been better if not for the Sox forcing the inclusion of the expensive and ultimately useless David Price (plus half of his contract.)

    Bogaerts has aged poorly. Or is simply playing poorly. His .814 OPS from 10 years in Boston has dropped down to a .722 in SD after his career low .676 this year

    That makes sense. 27 years old (Still!!), only signed for 8 more years with some $270mill left. Contract ends at age 35. While Abreu/Arias/Bennett is really impressive offer, getting Tatis is a very tall order. It’s hard to see them walking away from his production and contract. They probably do want to cut payroll, but Tatis is not that payroll. Bogaerts? Probably. Cronenworth? Definitely. Tatis? Makes very little sense to move him and strap yourself with Bogaerts’ and Cronenworth’s deals…

    There won’t be a real trade market until the CBA is resolved, since it can change the financial strategies of some teams. And even then, the Sox are a tad light on trade bait. I like Teruaki Sato as a good FA target. He’s hit 79 HRs in the last two season in the JPCL, and is similar to Murakami. Just finished his age 27 season. Hes listed as a 3b/OF, but no idea of his actual defensive skillset. I do like Tatis as a trade target, but even if SD wants to cut payroll, his contract is actually very good. In order to trade him, it’s going to take a lot. BTV gives one equivalent package as Arias, Abreu and Bennett. Honestly, that’s probably close. Possibly light…

    There is not Rockies wanted a ton for Goodman. The Sox pivoted to Rutschman because he did cost less, despite also costing a ton. Story will be in Boston next year with Arias on call for when he gets hurt. This isn’t a bad thing. Duran might be moved but a lot of that depends on what happens tjis off-season wuth Anthony…

    Why would the Sox sign a 31yo left-handed Curtis Mead coming off the best season of his career? Lowe isn’t the difference maker the Sox need; he’s redundant here, and 3 years from now folks will be trying to package him and his last two years off like they are Yoshida and Story. The only free agent bat that is intriguing me is Teruaki Sato, who is basically Murekami but with some OF skill. .392 OBP and .660 SLG in Japan. After the successesghggg that Murakami and (to some degree) Okamoto had this year, I hope the Sox can be more involved.

    Old Red’s viewpoint is flat out incorrect. He might have had unrealistic expectations or (more likely) solely judges everything by some singular stat like RBIs. But to say Anthony isn’t living up to the hype is more of a statement about how little done understand hype…
