  1. For someone who really tells everyone about the right he has to his opinion, you sure as Hell like to go out of your way to squelch anyone else’s. As for the closer, Houck (if healthy) was fine in that role. Schreiber has pitched almost exclusively in high leverage situations (which does mean even if he steps back he still can very likely pitch in regular middle relief roles) and Whitlock if healthy is just a flat out outstanding reliever. There’s no reason to believe any of them are worse options than aging and declining players like the list of free agent closers from earlier in this thread. The Sox need to as good bullpen arms. I’ve been hyping and overhyping Michael Fulmer and Rafael Montero (both of whom have closer experience) for weeks now (including Fulmer at the deadline).
  2. I don’t think he’s head case. He’s 34 years old with 13 seasons and 650 IP on his arm, along with who knows how many injuries to how many muscles, joints and tendons. He no longer averages 101 mph and peaks at 105. He’s still got some serious heat, but not the same heat he’s familiar with and he knows it. And it probably hurts somewhere every time he tries to dial it up and it takes longer to feel better each time. He’s just getting old for a pitcher. Happens to all of them at some point…
  3. That’s not what I said at all. Not even remotely. I said I liked that combo. I won’t speak for their health next season. And I think Houck, if healthy, is a likely trade candidate…
  4. So maybe they made a poor decision about what to market? These are people who decided at one point to live in South Dakota. (I’m kidding. Stop.)
  5. They’ve also combined for 106 IP, and for 2 starts since the trading deadline. (Bearing in mind that at the deadline, Sale was still expected back and even Paxton hasn’t been ruled out for the year.)
  6. I don’t get why people don’t like the Houck/Whitlock/Schreiber combo either. And I don’t see the Sox wasting time with Kimbrel or Jansen. Maybe Robertson. And this bullpen itself would have been a helluva lot better if they just kept it out of the rotation. Barnes bouncing back would be nice, but I think his All Star form from 2021 is probably gone forever for some reason…
  7. Jansen hasn’t been that much better than Kimbrel, and the Dodgers have pulled him from the closer role in the postseason before, too…
  8. But Kimbrel really isn’ta Closer any more…
  9. Diaz will likely stay with the Mets. His trumpet player might be available…
  10. At least we hope it was done on the fly, realizing with 2 weeks to go they’re downs SP all of the sudden. But I have no idea what the plan ever was for Whitlock or Houck…
  11. Sorry, Boss. Badlands National Park is in South Dakota. Jersey has no badlands, but they do have bad air and the Pine Barrens…
  12. I imagine Houck is in the mix for that, unless 1) his back is still an issue or 2) he gets traded. Schreiber and Whitlock are also internal candidates. And I suppose Barnes if he gets his shot together, but I think that would only happen well into the season after he’s finally proven he’s somewhat back where he was…
  13. I don’t know what lead to the decision to use Houck as the emergency starter, but that’s one of those things that might (hopefully) have been avoided during a normal off-season when Sale would have been able to report his injury when he got injured rather than keeping it air for two months…
  14. You are watching a different game if you think McGuire’s throw was on the wrong side. JBJ is an outstanding defensive CF, but not being JBJ doesn’t make Kike average.
  15. I think your standards are insanely high. Hernandez is well above average in CF. But if you think he’s average, who is above average?
  16. What? That was a great throw, but Locastro is one of the fastest runners in MLB. Not to mention, McGuire has been throwing out runners 34% of the time this year with those “parabolas” while Vazquez and his “lasers” have only caught 27%…
  17. I agree they have to sign him, but you massively overstate the case. He’s not a Hall of Famer. Fun side note - once Judge hits his next home run, Babe Ruth’s 60 HRs in 1927 will be the NINTH best season total in MLB history. But it will remain the highest total for a Hall of Famer…
  18. The deadline went sour for Bloom, but the one bright spot from it has been Reese McGuire…
  19. The Sox do have last place finishes, but they never have fire sales and rebuilds. Cliffs are inevitable sometimes…
  20. Margo won’t cook for Trevor…
  21. Not so sure about their roster crunch because they unloaded a boatload of prospects to get Soto. But the particulars of who Boston sends are not etched in stone here…
  22. Or Boston could try a different type of deal where they take on money. SD gets: Duran, Winckowski and Seabold (BTV surplus value: $12.1mill) Boston gets: SS Ha-Seong Kim (2 years $17mill, $7mill AAV) and Blake Snell (1year $16.6mill) (BTV surplus value: $12.4mill) San Diego is very likely to want to pare salary. They have two $300mill contracts on the books (Tatis,Machado) and they just acquired Juan Soto last month. Plus arb cases for players like Hader, Cronenworth, etc. They’d probably like to dump even more if possible. They probably don’t want Duran all that badly, but he does make very little money…
  23. I wonder about that. How huge it would be to move Garcia. The Marlins signed Garcia less than one year ago and were clearly prepared to pay him. So just a few months later and they’re just hand-wringing and fraught over what they’ve done? At some point, if they were so desperate to get rid of Garcia and Soler, why did they ever sign them in the first place?
  24. Like Ceddane Rafaela. As I suggested…
