  1. Yeah and the point is they were never very good…
  2. Or … maybe it’s their inability to pitch to teams that aren’t s*****? It’s largely the same staff that got them to the postseason last year…
  3. Both were options at either position and both had more cons than pros. The only middle infielder they acquired was Mondesi in a trade that so far hasn’t produced anything for either side but injury time…
  4. Hard to say, since the Sox didn’t go get a 2b to replace Story there either…
  5. Of course in 1967, the entire postseason was only one week and the entire AL was only 10 teams. Those days are gone, but I wouldn’t mind two 15 team leagues with no divisions and minimal (if any) interleague play and the top six go to the postseason seeded accordingly. I even like these new 3 game series in the divisional round - much better than the old “one and done” wild card game that was so unbelievably anticlimactic…
  6. That may have been the plan, but there’s also a good possibility it wasn’t. And certainly his play at 2b might have changed things as well. If you do believe they wanted Story at 2b for a year and then move him, they clearly never planned to bring back Xander. And if so, it certainly explains why the reported low ball offer was made. Although I don’t know what other offers were…
  7. Clearly Red knows. Didn’t you read his post?
  8. They are, but it’s not as blatant now…
  9. I’ve been on the “no divisions” bandwagon for decades. But the new balanced schedule is a step in the right direction…
  10. But the entire point is with wild card teams, schedules do matter. I mean, don’t you think the Cardinals get this boost every year from playing Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Chicago 57 times? From 2019 to 2021, the Cardinals made three postseason appears including two wild cards despite playing under .500 against everyone who wasn’t the Pirates, Reds or Cubs. Now this year, the team is asked to play a real schedule and they’re simply not any good. The MLB radio talking heads ask every day “what’s wrong with the Cardinals? Is it rule changes? Do they miss Molina that much?” No one ever says “maybe they were always bad but just had an easy schedule”. But it might be the case. And if the Sox are going to compete with inferior AL West and AL Central teams for postseason spots, there’s no reason to give them an advantage. The postseason should have the best teams, not the teams that do the best among some arbitrary grouping loosely based on geography…
  11. I’d go over just Rafaela. Not sure any of our younger pitching is much of an enticement right now..
  12. The problem with the old schedule is it rewarded teams in weak divisions…
  13. Devers has an OPS of .697 over his last 26 games…
  14. Right. So you’re saying that Houck’s issues with facing the lineup a second and third time can be mitigated if he would just let himself get obliterated in the first…
  15. Just win 6 of every 10…
  16. He’s was comparing tattoo volume…
  17. BTV accepts Ceddane Rafaela to Miami for Jesus Luzardo. This deal makes a lot of sense for both sides. Miami, even after dealing Lopez, has excellent starting pitcher depth (Alcantara, Garrett, Rogers, Cabrera, and Perez) . Luzardo is certainly good, but also arbitration-eligible after this season. Their outfield situation is horrific. They do have some struggling young players who might break through, but even then, Rafaela is versatile enough to take over SS. Will it happen? Oh hell no. Should it? It does make a good amount sense for both teams…
  18. While I understand option 1, I still take #2 since the bad contract is only one year…
  19. Certainly. Although in like the idea of keeping Crawford in the bullpen as relievers can impact more games, and, let’s face it, the game is down my passing out starting pitching. Of course since I’ve always advocated for having Crawford in the pen along with Houck, Whitlock, Winckowski, and Schreiber, at some point, the Sox do need someone to actually start games. Bello can’t start them all…
  20. Pivetta hasn’t lost speed on his fastball and isn’t at the point in his career where slumps turn into retirement. I have more faith in him bouncing back…
  21. I would imagine he’s behind Pivetta on the depth chart…
  22. I agree mostly, but that wasn’t my who created that list…
  23. And will people overreact to one start from Kluber? Like they did for one start at shortstop from Dalbec? Even if the Sox win Kluber’s start?
  24. Maybe they start, but both of them have started and neither exactly dazzled in the rotation either. Kluber was a very low risk gamble that didn’t work out. I don’t mind that they signed him. They needed rotation help and he certainly has a long history of being a successful starter. But I’m also glad it was only for one year and glad they removed him from the rotation…
