  1. I’d say he looks good at the plate. But in the field I’ve seen him sometimes look like Scott Bakula does in the opening sequence of every episode of Quantum Leap…
  2. They use the UZR system to determine degree of difficulty. As for specific game circumstances, not sure. Should they? I mean, Benintendi made probably the most important play by a Sox left fielder in franchise history. Does that make him a better defensive player than Yaz?
  3. Is a player with 10 infield singles in 10 plate appearances a better hitter or a worse hitter than a player who is 1 for 10 but with a home run?
  4. Exactly my point. And I would want my shortstop to have a bigger impact on my defense…
  5. Not at all. One great play doesn’t make up for 10 routine ones in any defensive metric. That’s why I said it’s not a measure of ability…
  6. Probably happens all the time. But you also have different defensive baselines for each positions. So the negative RAR in your case is relative to a different set of players than the positive one. There is some positional adjustment for this reason.
  7. WAR measures accomplishment, not ability. Which player will have a greater defensive accomplishment - the one with 45 chances or the one with 159?
  8. And Schwarber has -0.2 fWAR. Bogaerts has 1.9, but comparing the WAR of a shortstop and a left fielder is not really equal…
  9. Again, both Mondesi and Chang are injured. Kike isn’t playing because he’s friends with Cora; he’s literally the last man standing and best current option the Sox have…
  10. You don’t platoon Hornsby!!
  11. 2023 YTD Schwarber -.693 OPS Bogaerts - .787 OPS Yoshida - .871 OPS
  12. But who on the Sox is better?
  13. Nothing against Valdez, but Reyes gets the night off!?!! He’s been our 2023 Rogers Hornsby!!
  14. Yes among other numbers ” It’ll be a costly move for the Yankees, with Hicks still owed $19.57MM by way of $9.8MM salaries in 2024-25, and a $1MM buyout on a $12.5MM club option for 2026. He’ll also be owed the remainder of his $10.8MM salary in 2023.” Source: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/05/yankees-designate-aaron-hicks-for-assignment.html
  15. More like $27.8mill. Hicks has maybe $7.3mill remaining on his $10.785 mill for this year. Then it’s $9.785 mill each for 2024 and 2025. Then a $1mill buyout of his option for 2026…
  16. You don’t think it’s 1. That the 3 shortstops ahead of him are injured and 2. That Kike is actually a good defensive player and, forum opinions aside, the best defensive option the Sox have at the position…
  17. Are we winning now or not? I would prefer Giolito next year over Bassitt today. Giolito in August (and extended) is even better…
  18. Gausman certainly looked questionable at the time and Bassitt gave mixed emotions, at least with me. But if Bloom was holding out for off-season with Ohtani, Urias, Giolito, Montgomery, Snell, and Nola along with some potential reclamation projects like Flaherty, Marquez, Clevinger, Montas and Severino (please not the last two). Some of them will certainly be extended (Nola? Montgomery?). But certainly not all…
  19. Arguing over that aspect is a tad questionable given it’s still just two pitchers on the past 75 years…
  20. Two examples, one three quarters of a century ago and the second only one quarter of a century ago. Not really much better…
  21. It’s a size that works for Braves’ pitchers. They don’t have anyone that small now. Spencer Strider is listed at 6’0”, but also at 215lbs. Radial Iglesias is probably their thinnest frame, but he’s also 6’2”…
  22. Not sure why we don’t just use the word “abilities”. It’s funny how the baseball community likes to over-explain some things and still misses out on how complicated they really are…
  23. Also citing examples from over 70 years ago really emphasizes the point about how rare it is…
  24. 6’0” 170lb Warren Spahn was 218-247 3.20 from age 33 on…
  25. From BTV Yorke (9.8), Anthony (6.5) and Mata (3.8) for Lucas Giolito (20.8) Or Romero (8.7) and Walter (7.8) for Jordan Montgomery (16.1)…
