    To be fair, it does take stellar performance for a reliever throwing 30IP a year to be replacement level or better. Participation matters. If you use fWAR and seasons as a guideline, the greatest relief pitcher of all time was the fWAR equivalent of Gary Gaetti. And while Gaetti was a good player, is he really comparable as a third baseman to Mariano Rivera as a reliever?

    He brought in Mondesi, although clearly underestimated his medicals, and brought back Yu Chang. Hoy Park was brought in twice as well, although not held on to. Chang proved more than sufficient on defense, but when Kike is the fourth stringer. How many other teams are using their fourth option anywhere?

    Garza wasn’t the problem. If Kike makes a good throw and they complete that double play, the third run doesn’t score and Joely doesn’t come in to face Fraley. Not sure why it would be better to have Winckowski victimized by shortstop defense…

    If it helps the next two games, that’s a good thing. Winckowski is being used to protect leads, not long relief and not a guy you bring in for the fifth. Pivetta would be the guy for that role. How many IP did you think they want out of Winckowski today? And then tomorrow, when Justin Garza and Ryan Sherriff are trying to protect a one run lead in the 6th, will you be calling Cora out then, too?

    Casas has been rock solid all month. Hit Verdugo for Duran? I can see that. But it makes zero sense that Casas got to hit all of April when he was struggling. And then once he gets hot, you want to take the bat out of his hands…

    Entering tonight’s game, Casas was 6 for his last 15. Certainly not spectacular, but much better than the 5 for his last 24 that Verdugo put up…

    He was in A+ at 23, but that’s not exactly uncommon for pitchers drafted out of college…

    I have no doubt he will clear. Most teams passed on him in the Rule 5 draft and he wasn’t “injured” then. I’m not so sure he’s as widely coveted around the league as he is on this board. A lot of teams look at him as a 26yo pitcher who hasn’t pitched since facing some 60 hitters in Rookie Ball four years ago, and many of them have plenty of younger arms that they view as superior due to their development…

    I assume this was never done out of spite or anything; I assume DD was still just enthralled with Song’s potential and used this opportunity to grab him. But the follow up should be completing a trade to keep Song in the minors…

    The length of a rehab start is mandated by MLB. Once it’s over, Song has to either head to Philly, return to the IL, or return to Boston’s farm system. (Song does get some minor league rehab time for being removed from the Military List, but MLB might run that time concurrently with his rehab…) Only one of those options might work for Song…
