DD looked like it was time to go. After a great initial run, his 4th year left an 84 win team with a $240mill payroll, nearly $300mill tied up in 3 oft-injured pitchers, and no help coming up from below. And all this while the AL East was getting tougher. He wasn’t fired without some sort of reasoning…

Scott is only a year older than Song and has already earned a trip to MLB more than once. He might be the bottom of the barrel, but at least he’s in the barrel. Maybe. But it wouldn’t surprise me if they didn’t. He pitched 11 IP this year across 3 levels on a short Military List activation. He did strike out 16 batters, but also walked 11 and gave up 9 ER. At this point, he’s also 26 and probably not the best gamble on the waiver wire, especially given his lack of experience and Rule 5 status. I would bet more surprised if he was claimed than of he passed through waivers…

Not sure about Bloom, but it’s not exactly uncommon for any manager/leader to give autonomous responsibility. Otherwise the job just gets to be too much. I believe that was a primary reason Cherington quit was he felt (or was told) he wouldn’t have that autonomous responsibility, assuming he was left with any responsibility at all…
