  1. Calling this trade Betts-Lite is like referring Troy O’Leary as Ted Williams Lite. Outside of money, there was no reason to move Betts since the guy was perfectly healthy and performing. Sale has been sporadically available for multiple seasons now. Last year, everyone was down on losing Eovaldi and Wacha, two oft-injured pitchers who claimed the Pitcher of the Month Awards in May. Then both got (predictably?) injured a few weeks later and suddenly the noise around them stopped…
  2. Yes holding him looks worse if Sale stays healthy, but his track record in that department has been abysmal since 2018. I don’t blame the Sox for getting what they could out of him at this point. Even waiting until the deadline was far from without risk…
  3. Also the Braves’ farm is very topheavy with pitching prospects. Even if Sale goes down for a few stretches, it creates an opportunity to work some young arms into the rotation…
  4. I’ve heard those words about lots of players who then wound up injured.
  5. Story to 3b. Devers to 1b/DH with Casas…
  6. When did Sale appear to have righted himself? He was traded December 30, long before reporting and actually pitching. Would your opinion of this deal change if Sale suddenly got hurt?
  7. First of all, 57th best prospect isn’t even a ranking; it’s borderline sarcasm. There are only 165 minor leaguers total. Half the Portland team and a third of Worcester are ranked higher. And Worcester especially has several guys (Alvarez, Contreras, Heineman, Westbrook) that no one considers prospects. And what happens if he has a .400 OPS after 40 PA? Or does he get a real look, unlike Smith and Cooper? If Kavadas flops - Dalbec full time? Give Cooper and Smith a chance. If you’ve already quit on the season, what’s the risk?
  8. I am going to go out on a crazy limb here and say it’s because if you asked Cora and Breslow if they thought they’re 23-24 team that was 1.5 games out of the postseason in mid/late May with one of the league’s pitching staffs, and were doing this despite missing 1/3 of the lineup, they might not really agree with the assessment that the season is toast. And they would mean it, too…
  9. Smith’s career numbers show a huge dip since 2020, and a look at his last unimpressive 3 are probably more relevant. But Kavadas is like the 57th best prospect in the Sox system for a reason. He’s basically a left-handed, lesser version of Dalbec with worse defense. Hard pass. Very hard. I’ll take my chances with Cooper…
  10. In my mind, should he be staring over Grissom? At least against RHP? Also, don’t get too hung up on that JBJ trade. Bradley didn’t work out, but Renfroe has played on 3 teams since leaving Milwaukee, which was only two years ago…
  11. Not to mention, the only stat causing this distress is the batting average. Sure, he only has 6 hits, but all of them have been for extra bases (5 doubles, 1 HR). He also has 7 walks, which, hey, take them if they’re giving them. Really it’s the complete absence of singles causing all this consternation. It’s pretty unlikely he goes all season without one single with RISP…
  12. They’re so good they’ve learned to do all their fandom remotely…
  13. Yes. That kind of money for a free agent is often spent on a much older player whose best seasons are in the rear view mirror…
  14. I like the new philosophy more than these individual extensions…
  15. I’m ok with Devers’ career situational numbers, which show 2024 as an outlier…
  16. I think you make a good argument for doing it if you want to know a player’s current abilities. Now if you’re making a case for Cooperstown or in a simple “who’s better? A or B?”, then, yes, whole career is important in those example scenarios…
  17. I want to say Crawford is as well. My wanting to extend him in March now might be too late, and a wait-and-see approach, rather than a massive deal based on 9 starts. Not sure who is a higher extension priority - Casas or Crawford?
  18. I can dial back on his April struggles, but I still think Houck is a more urgent extension candidate…
  19. Not really. But it’s so cute how you justify everything you got wrong. “I wanted the Sox to bring back Bogaerts and they should have given the shortstop play” type stuff. First of all, they didn’t bring him back, and “should haves” are apparently something limited to your opinions. Second, the Sox shouldn’t have brought back Bogaerts given how much he costs and more important, for how long…
  20. He struggled in April last year and this year. Granted, limited data points. Clearly the Sox are going to struggle to extend Casas because they differ widely on how much he is worth. If that’s going to be the case, I’d prefer the Sox move on for now. There’s actually much more of a rush to extend Houck than Casas…
  21. You clearly did not understand that sentence, did you? If they turn it around, it’s not uncommon. Every year, there’s always a couple teams that trade for mediocre bench bats to fortify their roster or increase depth for the post-season…
  22. Somewhere Pete Rose is editing his forgiveness plea by substituting the word “irony” every time he originally chose “hypocrisy”…
  23. Yes. At this point, if you hold on to Smith and Cooper and both start to hit, even if the season flops, that’s two more potential (albeit unlikely) trade pieces for the deadline…
  24. When we have limited data, the debate is about the logic of these two extensions and not the results. I can see an argument that Rafaela was probably not the right candidate. Big extensions for players based on defense are rare, and the only other one that leaps to mind (Seattle’s Evan White) was a massive flop at a much lower cost. Bello’s $9mill AAV is high leverage reliever/backend starter money. So it’s not a big deal if that’s actually the role he settles into IMO. And now lock up Houck and Crawford. Casas is being difficult so let him wait and think about how much value injury-prone first basemen with limited defense really have. Even the ones who can hit in April…
  25. Yeah MLB has always had bigger priorities than simply using advertising revenue. And this is the one game whose very structure is so conducive to commercial breaks…
