  1. No one was unhappy with Sale as much as they were frustrated with his frequent injuries and possibly unhappy with the length of his extension. And the general attitude of the guy does depend heavily on his current health. Many were upset with Bloom for not trading Sale and his entire contract for nothing. And now many are upset with Breslow for trading Sale and getting back a young MLB player...
  2. Next year they also might start Story at SS and hold off on Mayer until Trevor gets injured...
  3. You just said other teams don't trade them. I named several examples of pitchers they did trade. Naming one team that does not have one (unless you count Pivetta) doesn't disprove this. But if you like, the Sox did trade for Pedro and Sale, which have been two of the best TOR arms in the last 30 years, and the Sox traded for them both...
  4. He might be right, but it’s just a baseball discussion. That’s what these forums are for…
  5. And yet it seems to happen anyway. Zac Gallen being a prime example. Also Tyler Glasgow, Dylan Cease, Cole Ragans, Joe Ryan, AJ Puk, Sandy Alcantara, etc..
  6. Two starting pitchers taking on their former teams…
  7. I just don't have faith in Sale staying healthy...
  8. Fine, but a run like Sale had with injuries is far from typical. I mean, who breaks a rib throwing a pitch?
  9. Also possible. I don't know if they possess the same "damn the luxury tax - full throttle" mentality you see in Los Angeles and New York. But I do think they were in a better position to take the risk on Sale's health due to their pitching-heavy minor league system. At worst, Sale buys some time for their prospects if he can't stay on the field...
  10. You can. The primary reason I wouldn't is the Sox have better outfield depth than starting pitching depth...
  11. Obviously this team would be better today with Sale instead of Grissom. But at the time this trade was made, everyone anticipated the Sox were a given to be in last place in the AL East and out of the postseason picture probably fairly early, and Sale's involvement was a huge question mark given the past 4 seasons. Could they have waited and dealt him at the deadline? Sure. But then you're gambling that he doesn't get hurt again, a gamble they have lost 4 seasons in a row...
  12. The entire premise of this thread is that StephCurry does not have any faith in Duran maintaining this level of play. He may be right; he may be wrong. He's no saying his assessment is superior to the Sox scouts. Just that he is putting more faith in the pre-2024 version. And if anyone does think this is as good as it gets, it is certainly a valid viewpoint to think Duran is a logical trade candidate if the Sox are out of contention by the deadline...
  13. If the Sox stay in the hunt, they cetainly cannot trade Duran. He is a big part of their limited offense. If they are 10 games out of the third wild card in July, then what? Obviously they will try to move as many potential free agents as they can - Jansen, O'Neill, Martin, Pivetta. They probably won't be able to move them all, but they will probably try. But if some team does make an intriguing offer for Duran, do you hold? We've seen controllable outfielders get some fairly impressive returns. i remember when Adam Eaton was traded on his team-friendly contract to the Nationals for Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez and Dane Dunning. That's a franchise-altering return. If the Sox can get such a return, should they do it? The other option is to keep Duran for his last 3 seasons, which doesn't look like such a bad option either...
  14. I bet the Braves are pleasantly surprised. If they expected him to start out this good, they probably don't ask the Sox to include so much cash...
  15. There were plenty of experienced arms who signed MiLB deals. The Sox signed none of them. Even if that starter comes through with a 5.00 ERA, it is still better than burning out the bullpen every 5 games. That will come back to haunt the sox later if they have to keep doing it...
  16. Even if it is not an ace per se, if the Sox can get a controllable SP, is he worth a deal? With BTV going to a pay model, I don't know the values right now. But if you can get a 2-3 starter with 3 years of control, do you pull the trigger? Some suggestions - Mackenzie Gore? Alek Manoah? Nick Lodolo? Josiah Gray? Reid Detmers? These are all pitchers who reach free agency one year prior to Duran, and are all varying degrees of good but none would be considered ace level today. Not sure what teams would actually want Jarren, however. But I am not asking if those teams would pull the trigger...
  17. If the Sox can stay within striking distance and actually decide to be buyers, Lugo is the prime sell high candidate right now...
  18. It's not working out, but given what Sale has and has not done in the past 4 years, I totally understand why this deal was made. But I can't rank this trade anywhere near the Betts trade, and not even with the Bagwell trade. And I think if the Sox had any inclination Sale would actually be healthy, they either don't make this deal or trade Sale for a lot more and pay a lot less, if they pay anything at all...
  19. There's really no excuse for having that many bullpen games. The Sox still need pitching depth...
  20. The one I think is clearly not keeping it going is Suarez, who has allowed 4 ER in his last 48 IP. That pace is historic. The one thing in Imanaga's favor is his ungodly control. He does not put himself in trouble with walks...
  21. It wi9ll be interesting to see how the OF plays out. Duran, Rafaela and Abreu are all under team control for the next 4 seasons. Plus Roman Anthony figures to knock on the door soon, and probably some other outfielders in the system can make themselves known. It's possible someone from this Sox outfield is not here as soon as next year (not counting O'Neill, who is likely gone after this season)...
  22. As of right now, he is tied with Wheeler and Imanaga for the NL lead in fWAR, with Suarez and Tyler Glasnow 0.1 behind. Houck leads MLB with 2.2 fWAR. Crawford is third in the AL...
  23. That was always the primary criticism of Sale, as well...
  24. Bello - good. Rafaela - probably a bit too early. Even if he takes over CF, there is a good chance he is Darren Lewis 2.0, but now he is one with a rather hefty contract...
  25. He walked too many people for those high leverage roles he pitched in...
