  1. This is not a surprising revelation about a player who has averaged 4.5 BB/9 throughout his minor lesser career, and who once averaged 8.4 BB/9 for the season (across two levels)…
  2. Sadly, however he went to the wrong Chris Martin’s ranch. But he at least now knows most of the lyrics to Viva La Vida…
  3. Ace!! Book it...
  4. It might have more, for what that is worth...
  5. You're lucky. I don't know how to spell any of Chewbacca's lines...
  6. Obviously this can change if they at least add Snell or Montgomery. Although MLBTR has them as reducing the budget from 2023 in an article today. This is a shame, as they are one team that would benefit the most from any of the Boras Four, given their rotation has a massively overpriced Tyler Anderson and Chase Silseth per Roster Resource. They do have Rendon at third base, and he should give them one or two dozen good games. (Maybe he should move to DH and Drury back to 2b, since Brandon is a better fielder than Rengifo.). And 1b is occupied by some guy named Nolan Schaunel, who I don't think is a real person. RR does have Schaunel platooning, but it is unclear with whom, as the RHH platoon bats are Jo Adell and Aaron Hicks (technically a switch hitter). Neither has ever spent much time at first base, and all of that time is as a baserunner...
  7. Swept by the Angels? They were 16th in runs scored last year with the MVP. They could easily be a bottom ten offense this season. The Angels went 73-89 and are replacing 6.6 fWAR with 1.9 fWAR. They might be in a 3 way battle with Oakland and Chicago for worst record in the AL...
  8. Think it makes him more tradable?
  9. Starting out west might be best case scenario as well. Oakland is a small market team coming off a 50-112 season. They have upgraded their rotation with some middling veteran arms, and should improve assuming health. But they will still finish at the bottom of this division. The Angels are down Ohtani, which is a substantial loss, and have done less to upgrade their team than Boston has. (Roster Resource has Drury moving from 2B to DH and Luis Rengifo taking over 2b full time as Ohtani's de facto replacement.) Seattle certainly should be an issue, as they stand to benefit the most from the likely steps back made by Texas and the current state of the Astros staff. I'd rather start on the west coast than than taking a road trip through Baltimore, New York and Toronto. Of course, the latter road games are still inevitable, and this only relates to the start of the season...
  10. As you have repeatedly reminded us, Varitek wa a 1.5 fWAR catcher at age 28. He then went on to have seasons of 1.7, 2.3, 3.8, 4.1 and 3.5 fWAR over his next 5. Wong at age 27 was only worth 0.5 fWAR, so the ceiling is very likely a lot less...
  11. No to mention Yoshida only has 4 more years that will take him through his age 33 season. Do people think Montgomery and Snell are going to settle for 4 year deals? I think the early demand was at least 7 years, which would take both through their age 37 season (since they were born 23 days apart).
  12. But it’s also fun to pick on Oakland…
  13. If they’re avoiding Montgomery for that reason, they coups get burned. Not to mention the likelihood of whoever is left having a QO attached…
  14. Except that one is actually breaking existing rules while the other is taking advantage of gaps in the rules. If there was no rule against using technology to steal signs and the Astros did so, that would be another matter...
  15. What about the players who inflated their bodies without breaking the rules? Not all PEDs were illegal for a lot of that scandal, and MLB only had rules against using illegal drugs...
  16. The Mookie trade was the one thing he was clearly not fired for, given that he was around for four seasons after the deal and because he was painted into a corner where it was the only realistic option. Now returning Graterol in the original Mookie deal - that is a definite point against...
  17. That is another candidate. To me, the illegality of some of there offenses is still in question. But it certainly garnered enough attention...
  18. Certainly possible at this point. All we know is he absolutely is signing somewhere at some point. Any dark horse candidates? Angels, perhaps? Maybe the Twins?
  19. And some guys will just take time. Kutter Crawford was not a name that got a lot of press while he was coming up through the farm, But he has certainly become a useful pitcher. There may be others like him that just don't develop according to the anticipated schedule, but still do well.. .
  20. The crimes were different, but they both sit atop the scandal sheet for their respective eras...
  21. One similarity is that, like the White Sox, a lot of Astros hated that the team was doing it. Altuve reportedly cussed out anyone banging the drum during his at-bats. There were a few others, too. But Karma slept right through it. That season enabled Marwin Gonzalez to get himself a couple contracts he clearly was not worth...
  22. My point. I mean, there are plenty of think Bloom was fired for finishing last two years in a row. That's certainly a possibility as well, and the drafting wasn't a factor at all. Maybe they didn't like they he spent on players like Yoshida and Story. Maybe it was that he twiddled his thumbs while everyone else got pitchers in July. Maybe it was because his personality was not conducive to relaying a positive message to the public with anything remotely resembling credibility. Maybe none of those and something else entirely. This is a multiple choice question where multiple answers could be correct. And that in itself was a good reason to fire him. But it doesn't help anyone understand what this team is doing, besides that they are apparently doing nothing...
  23. And the Black Sox were the biggest scandal in MLB history. Right now, the Astros are. Steroids, for all the negative press, at least skirted the rules at various times and was unethical without always being illegal. So are the 2017 Astros the 21st Century version of the Black Sox? I'd at least argue they are the closest we have seen...
  24. There are lots of possibilities. The fact that several of us all have legitimate complaints about him that don't necessarily overlap speaks volumes that it was not a single thing. But the overarching question is - what is the direction ownership expects from this team? Are they trying to compete, like they repeatedly have said? Are they just looking forward to better (re: cheaper) days? Do they care at all? Do they only want positive press?
  25. They only drafted 4 players in 2020. While none look like much, and maybe only Yorke has some promise, it's not exactly unheard of to miss on 4 picks. The 2021 draft still has a few players beyond Mayer, notably Rodriguez-Cruz that might prove useful. The 2022 raft might look better if Romero ever actually lasts a full season. It's not exactly starting over, but we really don't know what Breslow has in store for this team. Not sure how he plans to fix the pitching if he only brings in Giolito and eventually Fulmer. I mean, the guy hasn't even DFAd Joe Jacques yet!
