  1. If we go back 3 years, wasn’t Iglesias pasty of those worst middle infield combos? But of all the players the Sox have failed to retain, I think Iglesias is the one I’ll lose the least sleep over. One area in which I thought the Sox were ok was utility infielder…
  2. The only real question I thought was where to play him. He’s not much of an outfielder or first baseman. Of course the Sox really didn’t do much for those positions in 2022 anyway…
  3. I think any site tossing around trade ideas in October is clearly not doing journalism. But the Athletic did do a good job with the Astros’ scandal…
  4. … unless 2023 really was an outlier.
  5. This is the literal dictionary definition of a Strawman argument. In fact, it goes so far as to actually say the new pitcher acquired for Duran would need Strawmy John…
  6. It’s also much easier to run the team with hindsight…
  7. Fairly certain the days of worrying about luxury tax implications are over for the Sox…
  8. Worth noting, Helsley is a free agent after 2025…
  9. I am not so sure folks want him gone like they do Yoshida. The feeling most likely is “this might be as good as he gets” and he definitely won’t be getting cheaper. So why not capitalize?
  10. Duran was a big part of that September disappearing act…
  11. I looked it up on BTV. Helsley has a surplus value of 15.6 Jordan is 2.0. ERC is 3.2. Perales is 5.7. It’s not ridiculous on their model. But with Perales having TJ, I think that’s a problem. However if the Sox send Franklin Arias (10.5) instead, it works out much better on the BTV model and becomes a more tempting offer. Of course I never looked at Helsley’s money and years, which might be off-putting…
  12. Are you sure you’re opposed to trading Duran? The Sox surplus right now is definitely outfield…
  13. Like I said before, Duran belongs in the @in the right deal” catch-all pile…
  14. Red Sox have 6 overall on the MLB.com Top 100 list, with Anthony (3), Mayer (7), Campbell (10), Teel (25), Montgomery (54) and Arias (95). The Cubs have the most listed prospects, with 8. The least is 1, by the Yankees, Blue Jays and Astros.
  15. But my point is you said you don’t get better by trading your best player. San Diego did exactly that. To me, Duran falls into the universal “in the right deal” category. ..
  16. I see the logic, but Perales is down with TJ. That might temper interest in him somewhat…
  17. So you think Grissom at 2b and Campbell at 3b makes sense but Campbell at 2b and Grissom at 3b is something you just can’t fathom?
  18. I wouldn’t deal the top 4 for him. But other than them, I’d listen. Did they name any names?
  19. It’s a definition. I’ll honor it. Merely having one places you in a different class than most who use the term..
  20. Hunter Brown isn’t getting traded. The Astros still own the AL West and very likely expect to compete and win another pennant next year. Their alleged pitching depth is already depleted, since both Cristian Javier and Luis Garcia required TJ last season and are both likely out until August at the earliest. Plus they have Lance McCullers, who can materialize on the IL if you say his name 3 times in a row. And Framber Valdez, who has one year before free agency, which probably makes him more available than Brown. Fans in Houston might be claiming the dynasty is over. Doubtful the Astros themselves feel that way…
  21. It won’t. Teams don’t trade those players for outfielders coming off career years…
  22. Most likely both. They’ll pay half AND get a low-ranked inconsequential prospect. If their good about it, they might get some Greg Weissert type fringe reliever who has his moments…
  23. You do realize these are arguments FOR trading Duran? Right? If one year of Soto rebuilt the Padres rotation, what does 4 years of Duran offer? There are advantages to trying to move Duran over Soto. With Soto, the one year limited you to teams ready to compete now. And the $25mill contract limited you to teams with big budgets. Duran is in everyone’s price range…
