  1. I don't think they signed Jackson to start. He's the type of fourth outfielder the Sox should be looking for. (Although if I'm Austin Jackson, I sign with SF long before I think about Boston. Much easier outfield to get a starting job in.)
  2. Because Boras has clearly been in a hurry so far this off-season...
  3. Of course if you flip over to the General Baseball Forum, you will see a thread titled "Baseball America Top 100" started by Jacksonianmarch some time ago. The first entry in that thread is about the Yankees having six of the top 100 prospects. Four of those six (Montero, Brackman, Banuelos, and Romine) were complete flops. Romine, a career backup catcher, has been the most successful of these four. A little perspective...
  4. Sort of like how the Dodgers, while they always seem to have a good farm, have developed this new knack for taking utility infielders and turning them into All Stars...
  5. He was significantly higher on Devers than BA was too. ..
  6. Sure. Probably a couple dozen But I doubt any of the higher tier free agents will and risk being lesser fallback options in next year's class...
  7. Hosmer is not going to sign for $121mill for 6 years when he has already turned down $140million for 7 years. Unless he foolishly thinks he can get another deal worth $19mill at age 34...
  8. But those same writers have called him - direct quote here - the biggest landmine in this free agent class. He will be massively overpaid and for far too long. He's already turned down seven years. And he will be a huge reason why the Sox have to let some younger players go eventually. I'd just assume go for the shorter deal and save up for Betts...
  9. While I'm not wild about it, until he signs elsewhere, you really can't take Hosmer off the Plan B list. ..
  10. While I'm not wild about it, until he signs elsewhere, you really can't take Hosmer off the Plan B list. ..
  11. Double post. Also lousy "Delete" feature. ..
  12. A Gold Glove caliber defender on a 3 year deal? Once someone actually signs, that contract might look really sweet. But as of now, there are about 180 unsigned free agents and only 66 days until the season opens. A lot of these players will retire (involuntarily?), but there is a lot of signing action that should start happening any day now. In theory. ..
  13. The list is out. Only two Red Sox (Groome and Chavis) in the top 100. None in the top 80..
  14. Hanley had an OPS+ of 189 when he was JD's age last year...
  15. But whose going to light a fire under the slightly-above-average Hosmer?
  16. That was always a dead end...
  17. For those years, sign me up. Id prefer that over a $25mill 36yo JD Martinez. (Imagine if he ages like Hanley, who isn't 36 for 22 more months)...
  18. Disagree. When someone points out "these players make too much," I don't get the counterargument "would you rather the money go to the owners?" Absolutely!!!! The owners are going to be the ones providing my entertainment during down years. How many players are going to do that? Id also rather see owners buy their own stadiums instead of begging for tax money ( unless the stadium is public). A free agent might help the team for a few years. Or he might hurt the team. But either way, many of them become insanely wealthy regardless of help or hindrance, and none of them will use that wealth for my (and your) entertainment. ..
  19. Good point. That does help his case.
  20. But for how many years?
  21. So you think the Red Sox would be better off dealing Chris Sale for Charlie Morton?
  22. In that scenario, how much does signing two players with qualifying offers affect the Sox next draft?
  23. The Sox can control neither of those, but they can influence the first one...
  24. Its disturbing because he hasn't done anything. It's one thing to have Martinez/Morrison held up by a slow market. But what is it about the market that's preventing him from talking to his own players?
  25. Like I said, the problem is DD hasn't even started the process. I don't know how long a contract extension takes to negotiate - maybe minutes, maybe months - but that he hasn't even called his agent to say "I'd like to work something out" is the disturbing part. Unless he prefer Pomeranz walk after 2018..
