And then what? Worth pointing out fellow defense-oriented center fielders Mallex Smith was demoted while hitting better (.509 OPS) than Bradley and Keon Braxton is in danger of being released while only slightly worse (.394 in 50 PA) than Bradley. I’ve defended JBJ plenty based upon his defense and that he bats eighth, but he needs to get on some sort of streak. The only thing going for him is the atrocious outfield depth the Sox have right now. But even still, Gorkys Hernandez is probably checking out Boston-area housing... -
You can add Daniel Bard to that list as well. I agree about walks. Not every hard hit ball puts a runner on base, but every walk does...

Whether or not Chavis makes more sense at DH is not the question. This is about reports the Sox are considering Chavis in the outfield, which is not a personal theory of mine, but apparently something the Sox are considering. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/05/red-sox-rumors-michael-chavis-outfield-utility.html Now it’s very possible that it’s simply getting more media attention than it deserves, or maybe it’s being mentioned as imminent when really the Sox brass are talking about 2020. No idea. But if Chavis is to move to the outfield, who do you think he’d be replacing? Since it clearly isn’t Betts (barring an unreported plan to return him to 2b), that leaves Benintendi or Bradley. Maybe the plan is to platoon him with Beninntendi in LF? But that would limit him in the lineup to days against LHP, which defeats the purpose of trying to find a place for him. Or maybe the plan is to shuffle one of the corners to CF and stuck Chavis in as a replacement. And if so, Chavis in RF at Fenway is a worse idea than Benintendi in CF... -

I’m not so sure the Sox aren’t trying to replace JBJ. Chavis is reportedly looking at outfield time. And he isn’t going out there to replace Betts. Maybe the Sox might occasionally try Chavis in LF and slide Benintendi over to CF? -

Teams really don’t even rebuild any more. They just try to save money. Miami traded two players who won back-to-back MVPs and the best prospect they got in return was ranked below Chavis and Groome at the time...

Should I have added that he’s handsome? I’m honestly not that sure his trade value is altogether high. I just know it’s more than Nunez, Holt, etc. and if the Sox did move him it means Chavis can play everyday without being a defensive liability. Of course, by July 31, maybe we won’t want to see Chavis playing every day...

He’s a candidate, but probably not first choice. The Sox could also sign some sort of dirt cheap Brock Holt/Logan Forsythe type and give him a shot first, knowing that if he fails, Chatham is still there as an option...

I said of al the potential free agents, he’d bring back the most, with the possible exception of Porcello. And that Chavis could move to 1b if 2b isn’t working out...

I think mvp is probably right and Devers stays at 3b and Chavis takes first, leaving 2b the position to fill. Pedroia gets first shot, but a part time 2b might be a target. Internally, the options are limited. Holt (if he’s back), Lin and Chatham are options, I suppose. Or a cheaper FA like Dozier, Schoop, or (ugh) Kipnis. Or maybe DD breaks the bank for someone like Scooter Gennett, since he doesn’t seem to like going light in free agency.

One odd thought might be moving Moreland at the break. If Chavis becomes a liability at second, Moreland might be the only expiring contract to draw any interest (besides Porcello, but that only happens if the Sox are out of it). The undersized Chavis might be moved to 1b like a young Danny Murphy. Especially if the Sox are cautious after Moreland’s weak second half last season. I do consider this highly unlikely, however. I think the Sox might make some sort of Addison Reed / Ian Kinsler type move to grab a short term veteran who can respectably fill a need...
