As Sox fans, we’ve been lucky enough to have 3 GMs who did a lot of good for this team. Sure, each has made their bad deals. But that’s part of that job. DD May have made fewer than the others, but his tenure is shorter and, let’s face it, our evaluation of deals does change over time. To many, Price was a bad deal as recently as a few months ago...

Is Chavis injury prone or just recovering more slowly without his steroids? Travis’ ceiling is definitely weak side platoon stopgap. So, yes, he is a long shot. And if nothing else, maybe that leaves a clear role for Swihart...

Another thought is that signing Pearce does go a long way to blocking Chavis, who is the Sox top ranked prospect and one of the most MLB-ready. If anything, since Chavis missed a lot of 2018, should Boston be a little more conservative in their search for a weak side platoon player for 1b? Either Swihart or Travis might fit that need...

They might. There are certainly glimpses of promise in him. But if they break up Team Catcher Defense, it is one position they could potentially improve the offense...

I’m somewhat confident DD will be involved on Kimbrel. But signing Rosenthal is really more of a gamble on getting another power arm at the back of the bullpen, not to make him an instant closer. More for a Hembree/Kelly role. Of course, who knows what shape his arm is actually in...

I also wonder if going after a full time 1b might be one way to upgrade. Pass is WS hero Pearce, move Moreland to the bench, and signing (Matt Adams? There isn’t much else.) or trading (for Jose Abreu?) might be an option. It would certainly be an unpopular move today, given what Pearce did for this team. But it might be a better move for next season...
