    Maybe moving Porcello or Vazquez or Moreland. I know he tried to trade Bradley, but what offers was he rejecting? Or are you saying moving any Sox players to free up money was impossible? At the very least, an entire bullpen plus of major league relievers went unsigned until March and DD remained uninvolved, despite many going for risk-free minor league deals....

    I’m not so sure payroll is the limiting factor we thought it was three months ago, given the recent splurge on extensions. And moved could have been made to free up some money. This is now new territory for Dombrowski....

    Well, those upgrades were with the Sox last year. As of right now, the biggest name on the 2019 Red Sox who wasn’t on the 2018 Red Sox is Colten Brewer, a man the overwhelming majority of us never heard of 12 months ago...

    Whether Denny has specific ideas or not, does standing pat work? I suppose it can, but the Sox did stand patafter 2013 and the results could not have been worse. Look at the Yankees from 1996 to 2000. How many players played the same position for all 4 WS titles? Four? Maybe five, if you want to consider Rivera a relief pitcher and not a closer. They had lots of turnover, especially in the rotation, where only Pettitte was around for the entire run. The bullpen was actually more stable, despite the rude thinking that relievers are crapshoots...

    The cautionary tale is that in 2000, you could have made a similar post about Nomar Garciaparra, who, if not for a broken hamate bone, likely exceeds Betts’ WAR through his first 5 seasons. And afterwards was really never the same player again. I know future injuries won’t be a factor when Betts’ contract time comes, but there is always the possibility of an equally tragic outcome. As Sox fans, we’ve seen two of the best players to come up in our farm system before Betts to become completely derailed by them. The Sox got lucky with Nomar, but even today fans still want Pedroia to retire because he’s sucking up precious cap room while failing to be the player he used to be...

    That the Sox starting pitching has underwhelmed is not a revelation....

    No real numbers have been made public, but I imagine if he stays even close to last year’s pace, he’ll ask closer to Trout than Harper. I do think not being 26 when his time comes might be a big factor, but he still gets somewhere between Arenado and Machado for cash and years...

    Oh definitely. I doubt any team has ever traded a 26yo superstar and not faced backlash, regardless of what they got back. In fact, I’m trying to think of a single instance of trading a young superstar and the return was even worth it ...

    That would be Charles Comiskey, who refused to pay his players well and allegedly denied them opportunities to reach performance bonuses, most notably ace pitcher Eddie Cicotte, who was supposedly denied multiple opportunities to get his 30th win which would trigger a $10,000 bonus. (His salary was $6,000.). Not sure if the benching is true, but his game logs indicate he was pulled after 2 innings in his last game with a 2-1 lead...

    Yeah but is he considered a “generational talent” because he accomplished something Ian Kinsler has done twice? 30-30 is tremendous, but he had fewer home runs and stolen bases than Jose Ramirez last year...

    Tend to agree. It’s hard to label Betts as a once-in-a-lifetime layer when he’s a contemporary of Mike Trout and the younger fast tracked Ronald Acuna and Juan Soto, both of whom might be inspiring the phrase “Mookie who?” by the time they turn 26...

    Let’s get hypothetical. Say the Sox are 10 (or more) games out on July 31 and this season looks lost. Maybe injuries have piled up. Betts has resisted all attempts to sign an extension and is looking for Trout money (although Arenado money might be more realistic). With 1 and a half seasons left, his value is never going to be higher. What if the Dodgers offer a package built around Alex Verdugo and Julio Urias, with others? Still pass? What if Corey Seager (whom they went to a World Series without last year) was one of those others? Still no? (Again, hypothetical. Not expecting these exact returns.)
