    The Bartman saga was a particularly odd one. He was reviled in Chicago, where the Chicago Sun Times (motto: “A 2-ply newspaper for your comfort”) actually ran a story the next day giving out his name, home address, and work address. And our governor/felon Rod Blagojevich publicly suggested he enter witness protection. All Bartman did was act like a fan before the incident and become immensely classy afterwards. Marlins fans offered him money, which he donated to charity. Other fans raised money via GoFundMe to bring him to 2015 and 2016 postseason games. Bartman donated that money, too. The Cubs even offered him a chance to throw out the first pitch in the 2016 World Series and, later, an opportunity to be in the celebratory parade. Bartman declined everything. (Seriously.) And as far as anyone knows, he has never returned to Wrigley...

    My biggest gripe with Cora is his dedication to Brasier. While Ryan was very good last year as the fourth option in the bullpen, it’s entirely possible there is a reason no other teams touched him for 5 years. And the Sox might have pinned too much responsibility to is 30 IP from last year. That said, it’s not like Dombrowski did anything to give Cora better options. It’s not like Cora is bypassing Aroldis Chapman to get those save chances to Brasier...

    It’s a really safe bet his football contract has a clause about not playing baseball, among other sports, probably with some extra compensation. This is hardly a unique situation. The Cubs had to negotiate a bonus of $10mill into the contract of Jeff Samardjiza in order to convince him to abandon football contractually...

    Probably done too quickly. I counted Joe Gordon as a Yankee, but he had a great start to his career as an Indian. And the Yankees had Willie Randolph and Gil McDougald, whom I didn’t put anywhere because I had my 3 Yankees, with Lazzeri, Gordon and Cano...

    I looked into it objectively. Pete Runnels ranked 61st in fWAR at 2b, and he earned the honor or “third best Sox 2b”, as he was slightly ahead of Goodman. 11 of the original 16 teams had 3 or more second basemen ahead of Runnels since 1903. Only the Braves (0), the Pirates (1 - Mazeroski), the Phillies (1 - Utley), the Guardians (2 - Lajoie, Alomar), and the White Sox (2 - Fox, Durham) had fewer.     Another undeserving scapegoat. The funny thing is, since I’m in Chicago, I did ask numerous Cub fans what they would have done in the same situation. Universally and without hesitation, every single one answered “I would NEVER go for that ball.” Yet in the picture in every newspaper, all the fans around Bartman were doing exactly what he did. Bartman wasn’t the problem. Dusty Baker made every wrong decision...

    I haven’t seen a single person advocate for sending Chavis or Devers back down. And while Pearce and Nunez are struggling, let’s not pretend Marco Hernandez has some sort of background showing himself to be a proven upgrade. He’ll get a chance, but probably without compromising any depth...
