  1. I think you might be right about Kapler. But there are plenty of stories around the internet about how angry Phillips was after the two contracts. Age certainly made a difference, but Phillips came up about $150mill less because the Reds wouldn’t pay for RBIs. And while Phillips whined about it, he did pretty well financially over his career and there will always be good on his table, and no one put a gun to his head to sign a $72mill deal. But it was certainly an instance of teams no longer paying for RBIs like they used to...
  2. Chavis can’t hit anything. If he fell off a cliff he wouldn’t even hit the ground...
  3. Be careful what you wish for. The Sox have 4 guys who fit the career minor leaguer mold, and 3 have been awful...
  4. No, but the FO was teaching him about metrics and how they value them...
  5. Yes. But how many guys like that do we want in a 7 man bullpen?
  6. Honestly, I’d be happy if Weber could be the next Mike Maddux...
  7. From 29yo career minor leaguer Ryan Weber to 26yo career minor leaguer Colten Brewer to 30yo career minor leaguer Marcus Walden. I’m noticing a trend here...
  8. I’m sure age also mattered, but unless Kapler is a liar as opposed to a dope, the fact is the Reds refused to pay solely for 100 RBIs...
  9. I think the Weber grill is over 29. I used the Dick’s Sporting Goods reference because I once bought some sneakers from former Pirate /Cardinal /Guardians RHP John Erick there. I’d never heard of him before (despite that we actually had a mutual friend), but I knew he was a former major leaguer because he would casually slip the phrase “when I played at Three Rivers” into EVERY SENTENCE. As in Me: I’d like some sneakers. JE: I can help you. I used to wear sneakers when I played at Three Rivers. Me: Don’t care about the brand. JE: Let me show what brand I wore when I played at Three Rivers. Me: ummm ok. Where’s the bathroom? JE: It’s over there in the corner. Just like how I used to go to the bathroom in the corner when I played at Three Rivers. Me: Just so you know, I’m not coming back. JE: Know what you mean. I’m not allowed to go back and play at Three Rivers.
  10. Joey Votto signed a 10 year $225mill contract after a 73 RBI season. Team RBI leader Brandon Phillips (with 103 that year) demanded to re-negotiate his 6 year $72.5mill deal, primarily citing his RBIs. The Reds said “no.” Gabe Kapler, who was taking a minor league position with Cincinnati, told this story when talking about the advanced metrics the Reds were using. Votto fared much better in their eyes than Phillips did using these metrics, regardless of the RBIs...
  11. Keep it up. It’s working...
  12. Or Dick’s Sporting Goods...
  13. The last sentence is 100%. I really don’t know if teams pay for RBIs like they used to. Certainly agents do ask...
  14. Ryan Weber is 29 years old and pitching for his fourth organization in 11 years. He’s not a young kid...
  15. There is certainly something to that. My only caveat is I want my best hitter who is least likely to GIDP, either through speed or flyball tendencies...
  16. Yes but it comes down to the likelihood of those cases. The #3 hitter is set up that it could happen to him 172 times right away. Certainly the leadoff and 2spot hitters will have their share as well in later innings. But some stars do have to align, like #7 hitter making the third out the inning before...
  17. There’s that. Plus you suggested naming your newborn son “Mookie” to your wife...
  18. That was all a shame. Gonzalez was my favorite of the post-Nomar Shortstop Revolving Door...
  19. I don’t think you’re crazy for wanting Porcello back. I do have other reasons, though
  20. Well, we had that Alex Gonzalez guy in between...
  21. No. I think he only signed him over Cabrera in an effort to rebuild the farm (letting Cabrera go netted the Sox Ellsbury and Lowrie, but signing Renteria cost them Colby Rasmus) and he couldn’t refuse the offer of Marte. If Epstein was just unloading him to get him out of town, wouldn’t that return be considered surprisingly successful?
  22. O Oh GMs respond to media pressure. That’s not uncommon at all. And the money hit he took was a big deal at the time. But he also got the BA #2 overall prospect in return. (And really, the money spent wasn’t that different than what untried prospects were getting as signing bonuses at the time.) LNow that guy (the late Andy Marte) was a complete bust, but that was Cleveland’s problem...
  23. I believe that is already calculated into fWAR...
  24. I haven’t seen Gallo play CF for a single inning, so we’d just be working off reputations here...
  25. As a hitter, his numbers that one year in Boston were right in line with his career numbers. He was awful defensively, but metrics had him in rapid decline the 3 previous seasons. And it was also only one season, which is more important (and really my entire point - that this whole “can’t handle Boston” thing gets thrown around so quickly). At the time, I couldn’t remember Renteria diving for a single ground ball and playing all year very gingerly. Like he had a mild injury of some soreness, which is hardly uncommon. But I think people cling to the LaRussa comment, which I always interpreted to mean “Edgar won’t be very good without me, since I’m the only manager who knows how to get anything out of him or any other player.” But then, I’ve always felt LaRussa was a bit of a megalomaniac...
