As those deals get shorter, SF is likely to try and pare a few dollars off before going big again, although I’m not sure how much interest there will be. Interest thought - if Machado had signed with the White Sox, it actually might have made Crawford that much more marketable...

Some possibilities, but I'm sticking with Angels for now. I think SF has too many big ugly deals, and Seattle is not really a So Cal team. I could see the Dodgers and Padres being involved, but will SD go with the mega contract two offseasons in a row?

The Padres have a pitching prospect named Henry Henry. That's a better redundancy than Hall of Famer Billy Williams...

A couple names that might be on Bloom's radar Tanner Roark. Made $10mill last year in arb and about $21mill in the past 3 years, during which he has been worth 7.0 fWAR. Basically he gives David Price production for Mike Fiers money. CJ Cron. A non-tender candidate in Minnesota who has made $7mill in the past 2 seasons combined, where he has hit 55 home runs and posted an OPS+ of 113, roughly what Mitch Moreland posted last year at a salary roughly equal to Cron's combined 2 year earnings.

Certainly JD is more than just a HR hitter, but there is certainly something to teams not valuing the HR like they did. CJ Cron has hit 55 home runs in the past 2 seasons and is a candidate to get non-tendered for the second season in a row. (And might even be on Bloom's radar for this reason.)

I doubt either Houck or Mata make the 40 man roster right away, as there is no reason to add them just yet. I do think there is a chance either or both make their debuts at some point this season, but I would be surprised if it was in April. And there is no reason to put either on the 40 man roster before his debut, as they do not need to be protected. The first 40 man roster decisions will be made in December and are strictly related to the Rule 5 draft. The interesting this is, you can't bury players on the 60 man IL during the offseason to open up spots, so Pedroia will have a spot unless the Sox DFA him (a move that sounds harsher than it is; no one is claiming him.) The Sox might deal a non-40 man prospect or two to tap into the abundance of San Diego prospects who cannot be covered, like we did last season to get Colten Brewer...

It doesn't say they won't, just that they haven't. It does say that they met with Boras, and it was implied that it was about Martinez. If JD does opt out and receives a QO, it gives Boston the upper hand in negotiating, as the QO can stifle interest from a lot of teams. Bear in mind 2 years ago, Martinez drew very little interest when he was younger, still playing the field, and did not have a QO attached...

But it's like a long term deal, and the value is greater at the lower salaries. If Bradley is worth 2 fWAR per yer, then he is viewed as being more worth it when you get 6 fWAR for $24mill than if you get 2 fWAR for $10mill....

Well, no one ever wanted to trade for Bradley when he was making that much. Reportedly DD shopped him heavily last winter with no takers. And DD was reportedly in a cost cutting mode where he also shopped Porcello and Bogaerts. Now Bradley is more expensive with less control. Doubtful the Sox find takers

I think Henry would have no issues paying the tax if he still made a profit. But when you have a quarter billion dollar mediocrity machine, I can see the cause for alarm on his part...

If you look at OPS+ over the last 3 years, Bradley has a 90 and Pillar has an 89. That’s pretty equal. Anyway, Pillar’s option is like $9mill and no way SF exercises it. So he’ll be available for less. And like I said, the Sox should just non-tender Bradley and re-sign him for less as a free agent...

JBJ batted 8th or 9th. If the Sox get another CF who doesn’t hit but bats 8th or 9th, I’m fine with it. The only issue with JBJ next year for the Sox is likely just his salary...

The Rays also got Trevor Richards in that deal, who looked outstanding last spring and carried it over into the regular season. And gave up a top 30 prospect. I’m not so sure Anderson was anything more than a 28yo journeyman rookie having a career year only to be never heard from again. The problem teams face with the bullpen is that they still use it as a dumping ground for pitchers not good enough for the rotation. But in this day, relievers handle nearly 50% of the IP. It makes sense to me to keep a young pitcher like Darwinzon Hernandez in a role where he will have a higher percentage of high leverage IP than one based solely on volume of IP...

So the Padres take on a net of over $40mill in salary and that somehow maximizes the prospect return? Over just trading Betts? I would deal Price for Myers and perhaps try to extend the deal for some of the Padres 40 man roster crunch prospects for some of Boston’s not needing protection. But deal Betts seperately...

For the record, Price is owed $96mill over the next 3 years, not $66mill.. It's worth it for the $17mill savings towards the luxury tax...

It does make sense. Granted, Ellsbury is viewed as a traitor for refusing to sign with Boston and then going to NYY, but the reality is he was just a guy that we all cheered for for 6 seasons who simply refused extensions because he was deadset on testing free agency. Sound like anyone else?

There are almost no outfielders in the Sox farm system period. Yet the Sox are likely to trade Betts, non-tender Bradley, and might see JDM opt out. And people still want to trade Benintendi!! If all of that happens, I strongly suggest a groundball pitching staff...
