The prevailing strategy, partially likely driven by economics, is to use bullpens for more innings. Good starters cost outrageous money. But it’s become a bullpen game. The Sox bullpen just isn’t that good. They do have their nights where they’re outstanding. But in the big picture, they lost two of their better relievers from last year, replaced them with no one, and don’t have much depth to absorb injuries. And they also appear to have paced an exorbitant amount of faith in Brasier despite a very limited track record. Maybe Steven Wright can provide some help. But the Sox could certainly use another reliever regardless...

Why would the Sox have passed on Groome because of his father? Do teams avoid Josh Donaldson because of his dad? Groome’s father is a completely different human being that the Sox didn’t draft...

The Blown Save tally does include those 8th inning losses, as well as earlier innings..

The Sox pen had 20 blown saves last year. They pitched a total of 587 IP. This year the Sox have 15 blown saves in 309 IP and are on pace for 625 IP for the season, a modest 6% increase (which is likely to be larger by season’s end)...

For a substantial player, Casas is the clear cut prize. But for lesser yet still helpful pieces, I hope it can be done without him. I consider Shane Greene - 30 years old, makes $1.9mill this ear and $4mill next season - a likely trade target. He’s having a career year so far outside his norms, it’s a definitive outlier. But Detroit isn’t going to give him away. Would Greene command Casas plus? I’d be surprised if Dalbec/Hernandez got it done...

Doing a little more background work on Renfroe lead me to the conclusion that he isn’t any better in the clutch (if you believe in it) than Benintendi. Didn’t see much about his teammates live for him, but most likely, he falls into that massive category most players fall into where some like him and some don’t. But really, that San Diego is trying to move him during the best stretch of his career screams that they’re selling high because they don’t believe this level of production is sustainable . And no one knows him better than the Padres. It’s similar to how the Yankees are hyping Clint Frazier during his hot streak as some bat speed monster right-handed power machine. Yet they still went out and dealt for Encarnacion when they needed right-handed pop rather than just using the guy already in the Bronx...

The Sox do have glut of slugging corner infielder types with Devers, Chavis, Dalbec and Casas. But I’m hoping they hold Casas. Maybe some GM has more faith in Jarren Duran than I do. I like Darwinzon Hernandez, but I won’t miss him. But I’d rather move Dalbec than Hernandez, Duran, Casas, Houck or Shawaryn...

They do have numerous other potential rotation arms from their stocked farm, including Josh James (ok he’s in the bullpen), Corbin Martin, JB Bukauskas, Cionel Perez, and Brandon Bialek. But look at the Astros current team. How many players do they have anywhere that we’re acquired by dealing top level prospects?

With a lot of the blown saves coming in the 7th and 8th innings, if the starters were able to pitch deeper into games, they wouldn’t be occurring. This will only exacerbate as the bullpen sees more and more work...

Workman is the bullpen MVP to date. And the list of teams interested in Thornburg is shorter than the list of Oscar nominations for “Dude, Where’s My Car?”

I originally focused on starters, but the Sox could/should be looking at relievers. Some candidates include: Shane Greene. DD does like those ex-Tigers. Greene is having a career year and is signed through next season. Might be pricey. Hansel Robles. Personally I think the primary reason the Angels haven’t made Buttrey the closer is they are trying to pump up the trade value and appeal of Robles. Sean Doolittle. Certainly a favorite target of the Boston media, but I’m not sure Washington is waving the white flag just yet. Greg Holland. Quietly having a good year, assuming AZ decides to sell. David Hernandez. Quietly having a really good season. Cincy might not be selling yet, but I think they will. Will Smith. I don’t think the Sox can pull this off, but I’d be negligent to not mention him.

It’s just the natural evolution of the sport. Specialization. They maximize pitching efficiency by having certain pitchers pitch in certain roles. And it’s still going. Some teams are shying away from using the closer in the ninth inning and instead opting to use him as the “high leverage” situation specialist. A lot of this was very likely also the product of economics. Starting pitching cost heavily, but non-closing relievers were comparatively cheap. So a financially strapped team that couldn’t afford a good SP would then instead use a cheaper, less effective one but limit his innings and rely more on the cheaper middle relief arms. The NFL saw a similar shift to specialization by having players who are either offensive or defensive players. And also players who do nothing but place kick or punt. Or long snap. Or, on some teams, kick off...

Be a little fair to DD. He did draft Shawaryn. He also drafted Houck, who is climbing through the system. And also Groome, whose issues have not been his fault. He’s only been drafting since 2016, and not many players in drafted in that timeframe are in the majors right now...

The big question with the bullpen will be how much the Sox think they can rely on Wright and Thornburg. Yes, Thornburg. Tyler Thornburg has done nothing in 3 years except get hurt. However he did see his velocity return this season to where it was in Milwaukee. This might be giving some false hope that he’s back. But so far he has failed on the failed to back up this hope...

Their window isn’t even close to closing. Bergman is locked up. Alvarez is the real deal. We haven’t even seen Tucker yet or a decent stretch of Fisher. (Consider Springer replaces.) McCullers might be out but he isn’t dead. They still have Josh James. And Whitley might be a disappointment but I bet they don’t give up on him...

The Astros are typically very stingy with prospects. It’s not unheard of them to stand pat at the deadline. Stroman could also wind up in the NL. With Rich Hill going down recently, the Dodgers might be actively seeking a starter. Oakland, if they decide to stay in the hunt, now has the biggest need...
