The Nationals don't seem like players for Betts to me, since they have a full outfield with Soto, Robles and Eaton if they exercise his $9.5mill option, which they should. Of course, they could exercise his option and include him in a trade for Betts. But their farm system is top heavy and bottom bare. It's hard to see them putting together a deal unless they decide to trade Carter Kieboom, which is VERY unlikely. Or if the Sox are willing to take 19yo Luis Garcia, which, while a good acquisition, does nothing for the 2020 or 2021 club...

Trades rarely fall together quickly. The first step is the contract review, which has probably already happened. and the Sox might have some contingency offers on the table. But I would think nothing would happen until after Qualifying Offers are extended and either accepted or rejected. If, say, the Cardinals extend an offer to Marcell Ozuna and he rejects it, they become another team that might be interested...

No way the Mets give up all that for one year of Betts. A simper deal of just Nimmo, Smith, and Gsellman seems more fair. Or if the Mets substitute Matz for Gsellman. And the Mets are not trading Ronny Mauricio for a rental outfielder...

For some reference, the Sox have $159mill covering 7 players. But that could go down to $136mill for 6 players if JD opts out...

It might make more sense for them to trade Correa, since they have a few INF prospects or can move Bregman back to SS (and Gurriel to 3B with Yordan Alvarez taking over 1b). Did anyone notice Bregman finished 0.1 fWAR behind Trout and 0.1 bWAR ahead of Trout? The MVP race might be that much tighter...

Why would the Sox not give him a QO if he opts out? That does nothing to benefit them. If they extend the QO, it gives them more leverage for bringing him back (presumably at a lesser AAV) since they are the one team that would not be affected by it. If JD opts out, he is getting a Qualifying Offer. Same goes for Chapman...

He was ineligible to receive a qualifying offer last time he was a free agent because Detroit traded him midway through the season to Arizona....

We have no choice but to live through it, but this could be worse than 2014-2015. The Sox had a better farm back than and no daunting contracts like Price and Eovaldi. All the current buzz is that the Sox have no intention of exercising that first “one last time” option.

The Sale trade was the cost of doing business. Someone good had to go, and if we had dealt Benintendi, we'd probably still see this same discussion with those two names reversed. The initial asking price for Josh Beckett was reportedly Pedroia and Lester and the Sox managed to get away with a package of Hanley Ramirez and Anibal Sanchez. I'm sure a lot of people hated that trade when Pedroia had a .561 OPS in 2006 and Lester had a 4.76 ERA, meanwhile Hanley had a .833 OPS that first year and Sanchez threw a perfect game. But I think we most people now agree the Sox traded the right two players there...

That's not how it works in the NFL. The only option is to hold out, and while MLB rarely sees that issue, it has happened, notably in the 1990-1991 off-season when both reigning MVP's Rickey Henderson and Barry Bonds held out....
