    We all get they’re not getting back a player as good as Mookie. But it doesn’t matter what the fans want. Or other unnamed NL execs. Or Peter Gammons. Or the trade simulator. Or you Tom me. Does Friedman think he needs Betts to win a title?

    Well, slow down. 1. Gammons never said the execs named those Dodger prospects. Or what the origin of that list was. Was it just some sample names Gammons threw together? Or did others name those as reasonable targets? 2. Does he also say what the execs replies were? 3. Bear in mind this was an “either/or” question that included a side deal for Price vs including him with Betts 4. And lastly, the only exec’s opinion that actually matters is Andrew Friedman. I’m sure those guys have no issues trading someone else’s prospects.

    I don’t think he is holding out quite that high. I mean, he’s talking about taking Wil Myers. The big problem with selling Betts as a need to “push them over the top” is this Dodger team lost two World Series in the past three years to teams embroiled in cheating scandals They probably already think they were good enough to win twice. If Betts had two years, Verdugo, Gray and Gonsolin is doable. But for one expensive year? More like Gonsolin, Downs and maybe Cartaya, plus someone who makes money to take back. Giving up all that for Bets is very risky, especially if something happens to Mookie. Is there an example of a team unloading an equivalent package for one year of a player?

    And my version could be some Chicago urban legend. But it sounded more like spite rather than financial common sense was the motivation. The only thing it really explains that’s otherwise a big question is why the Cubs traded away Palmeiro after his All Star rookie season. And even then, it seems like that might have happened too early. I do believe he got $5mill when he came back. Over 2 years, but it’s not like he was going to get 2 years anywhere else...

    Nope. Eovaldi is my whipping boy. If people can pile on Pedroia for one singular incident after his great career in Boston, I don’t see why Eovaldi and his one singular good postseason game should be immune...

    Actually from what I heard, Sandberg’s story was the opposite. He knew he was headed for divorce, as his wife was cheating on him with his teammates (allegedly among the offenders was Rafael Palmeiro). He “retired” from baseball to keep her from getting any of his salary. Once the divorce was finalized, he resumed his career. I don’t know why Dempster’s marriage fell apart. With ball players, there are always reasons. Too much time apart? Infidelity? But if his wife left him for walking away from $12mill after he already earned $89mill, he was right to get away from that gold digger...

    That his marriage ended did show that he needed to do something about it and he knew he stood to lose a lot more than $12 mill in a divorce. He did make $89 million over his career; I doubt another $12 mill would have changed his standard of living. To me, it looks like he prioritized saving his marriage over one last season of baseball. It just didn’t work out. Maybe it was too little too late?

    No one should have an Outback restaurant. No one. And if you think about it in a childish and immature fashion, "Outback" is a terrible name for a restaurant...

    Myers has only 3 years left at $22.67 mill. Still a bad contract, but not as bad as you say. Bloom has stayed away, at least from San Diego;s insistence that the Sox take the whole contract.
