I've heard some talking heads say not many teams will be spending, and in fact many teams will be cutting costs that are not normally cost cutters. Their expectation was many options would be declined that normally wouldn't, and even the strong possibility of some surprise non-tenders. I think he might have overstated his case, but it would not surprise me if there were fewer teams in the market for the bigger names. (Boston was the only team they agreed in consensus would be spending this off-season)...

They certainly used to. As the site owner frequents the comments sections, you can raise questions to him and he answers publicly. And if he thinks he made an error, he addresses them, too...

I guess I wonder what "shorter contract, cheaper dollars" means in that case. The last few seasons, Ozuna has been a step behind Springer at the plate and he seems like the most likely consolation prize for whoever makes a mega offer to Springer but is not his top choice. He might come cheaper, but that doesn't mean Ozuna will come cheap...

Brantley was willing to accept a 2 year contract last time. While not really an essential part of a rebuild, he is an extremely good hitter (.852 OPS/125 OPS+ in the last 3 seasons) who can fill a role. And I'm not anticipating some sort of full blown "rebuild" like, say, the Astros did; I think the Sox will add pieces to make them competitive without adding any boat anchor contracts that drag on for the better part of the next decade as the player ages into mediocrity. So, I am not expecting Bauer. As for my ability to predict, I think the Pirates trade is unlikely simply because Vazquez probably doesn't really fit their timeline, although a third team (Mets? Rays?) could get involved. But you might have loved my old WAPM predictions from the other site...

Could and very liekly will. Of course, that doesn't mean they come cheap. Or, to be honest, that he has any interest in Vazquez despite the team having a black hole at catcher ever since Francisco Cervelli stopped playing the position...

1. Sign JBJ 2. Trade Benintendi for P (to CWS for Reynaldo Lopez makes sense. I'm telling ya.) 3. Trade Vazquez and Thad Ward for Jameson Taillon. Blackmail Cherington if necessary. 4. Sign Mike Brantley for LF and James McCann to catch. 5. Bullpen. Fix bullpen.

Exactly. And those teams had pretty much nothing in common with each other either. Really, the big bulk of that was the annual sweep at the hands of the Bash Brothers...

But there really isn't much else to explain it. Those 18 games span 16 seasons and the teams just have very little in common with each other in terms of players and managers. It's not like it's the same players choking game after game. The Twins current starting second baseman was 5 years old when that streak started, and one of their starting pitchers was 7...

Jameson Taillon feels like a decent Bloom-style target. Former top prospect who simply has not panned out, much like Tyler Glasnow. Per BTV, a deal of Vazquez and Ward is acceptable, assuming Pitt is interested in those players...

But the Sox won the game with Henderson's big home run off Donnie Moore (on Hendu's sac fly in extra innings). What was forgotten was Steve Crawford getting out of that bases loaded, no one out jam in the ninth allowing only the tying run. Or were you referring to Henderson's home run in game 6 of the WS that year that would have been the winning run had not the Aguilera meltdown that culminated in the most overblown error in MLB history?

At this point, even as Eovaldi's biggest detractor, I don't foresee a situation where trading him makes sense. Before last season? Yes. But right now with the pitching in the state it is in, I don't see how they can deal him and improve for 2021. (Which of course, does not mean it cannot happen. Just means I cannot see it.)

I tend to think it was Mueller who really turned everything around. If he doesn't hit that home run, we wouldn't view Varitek/ARod altercation the same way. It's just part of the Saga of Bill Mueller in 2004, I guess.. The man singles of Rivera in the ninth inning of game 4 of the ALCS to kickstart the most improbable comeback in MLB history, and all anyone talks about is Roberts' stolen base...

LOL Without seeming like I want to press the issue, who are the Sox players that it would break your heart if they were dealt away? For me, once Mookie got dealt, that left only Bogaerts and Devers, I don't think anyone else would bother me...

We have favorite players left? Really, right now this team is Bogaerts and Devers. Verdugo went a long way to win some hearts. And no one loves any of our healthy pitchers...

And it is also possible that Bloom is waiting to see if DD (or whoever, really) gets the Angels' job and fires Maddon, who is Bloom's former manager, and whose name does carry sufficient PR weight. (Chicago hired him solely for that reason, even firing newly hired Rick Renteria to accommodate Maddon.) The one point I would find makes very little sense is passing over Gibbons solely because it was an interim position. If Gibbons was the guy he wanted, there is no point in waiting it out, especially since it leaves the possibility of Gibbons getting another position elsewhere. If he actually liked Gibbons, he would very likely already be here...
