  1. THe problem wasn't Grady pulling Pedro. It was leaving him in too long. However, he did have the defense that his bullpen was horrible that whole season. Cash, on the other hand, had a terrific bullpen all season long...
  2. Somewhere Pete Carroll is breathing a heavy sigh. Since this is now the most second-guessed coaching decision since his Super Bowl XLIX play-calling...
  3. Is that the pitcher "losing it" or the opposing hitters figuring something out?
  4. And really, all the analytics in the world don't make Mookie a lesser player...
  5. In normal Sox season, 3/4 of those guys would have gone to Pawtucket and been nothing but depth. And the others probably never would have been with the organization. But the Sox had no money to spend and no Pawtucket (Worcester) to send them to...
  6. you didn't have to say "ignore." You strongly implied it when you said their approach backfired. One questionable managerial move (using logic we don;t even know) doesn't mean the entire approach backfired. The Dodgers are run by a former Rays' employee and he undoubtedly uses a similar approach. Maybe the Rays just got out-analyzed...
  7. If you are going to justify Brewer using his xFIP, then shouldn't the following pitchers be considered a lot more questionable based on xFIP? Valdez (4.68). Ryan Weber (5.01) Mazza (5.14) For comparison, the departed Triggs was 4.74 and and Kickham was 4.60. There were several equally bad, but some of the IP totals (like Taylor's 7.1 and Hall's 8.1) make them easier to dismiss for now.
  8. Backfired? They took the 28th highest payroll and made it all the way to game 6 of the World Series. You don't ignore that type of accomplishment because of one week against the best record in MLB that did not work out...
  9. Yeah but Hall was reportedly acquired due to his extremely high spin rate. Both have an option remaining (Hall has 1, Springs has 3). If the Sox think they can get Hall to throw some strikes in Pawtucket, he might be the preferred option of the two. And Hall only had 8 IP last year as well, His game log (all 4 games) might be unimpressive, but it's not necessarily a sample size representative of anything. Not that the 20 IP from Springs paints a clearer picture either. I also omitted Walden, who I suppose could also be DFA'd, and he has he double whammy of having a bad season and not being a Bloom guy. So that makes for 13 candidates for DFA/trade/whatever. And not all the moves will be predictable. Last year, the Sox made some moves that were mildly surprising with regards to who left and who stayed...
  10. Oh I will think they will keep a few of their project pitchers, But keeping, say, Hall over Springs is not really a jaw-dropping move. I named 12 candidates, and I expect numerous players DFA'd from that list, but not all 12. And no one on that list would surprise me...
  11. Brewer was successful?
  12. Corey Seager
  13. Well, Soggy Corn Flake Crunch. The Sox still have plenty of room to DFA people. Candidates still on board include Puello, Stock, Covey, Hall, Springs, Brice, Peraza, Aybar, Hart, and Brewer. And I think Valdez and Weber should be candidates as well...
  14. Mookie was drafted in 2011. Cherington did not take over as GM until the 2012 season...
  15. If Seager asked for $35mill annually, I would let him go. Paying that money to Mookie is one thing; he is of Cooperstown Caliber. Seager can be ranked anywhere among the top 5 shortstops to reach the market in 2021 He simply isn't the same type of unique talent...
  16. Ohhhhhhhhhh. So that's what the T.A. in George T.A. Steinbrenner stood for. I always thought something else...
  17. Well, my point was his reputation and it's effect on his desire for total autonomy. He's obviously among very few human beings on the planet worth considering for a MLB GM position, but that doesn't put him in the same class as the ones who are also not only on that exclusive list, but are regarded enough to get carte blanche. While there are Sox fans who only look at his track record here and do not blame/credit him with the current mess the team is in with their large declining contracts and depleted farm system, I can promise you not a single MLB owner or President of Operations feels that way. And that he did the same thing in Detroit does not help him. I will not be surprised at all if another team hires him. I would be extremely surprised if he got total autonomy...
  18. While it is a question mark, at least he does have mutliple options available in Jansen, Treinen and Graterol. And possibly Kolarek if it is matchup-based...
  19. Or recurring injuries....
  20. Probably true, but those guys also do not carry the same reputation as Dombrowski...
  21. How many of those reasons contain the phrase "AJ Pollock"?
  22. I assume when "Making a Strawman" becomes an Olympic event, you will be representing Canada? I do think it is a good idea to not give $200 mill/7 year contracts to pitchers over 30. Not really sure how that equates to "avoid pitchers altogether."
  23. Now that he has been DFA'd I'm ok with bringing Lin back as a non-40 man player. BBut if they let him go or he elects free agency or a return back home, that';s fine, too. He's not exactly irreplaceable. Of course, this move is to open spaces on the 40-man to protect Rule 5 eligible players. As the Sox have 6 very obvious candidates (Groome, Mata, Seabold, Rosario, Potts and Downs), so someone else is obviously gone within a couple weeks as well. There is no shortage of obvious candidates or DFA...
  24. If you say so. I had to Google around to see what was hot to make the damn joke work.
  25. Lin, Leyer, Godley, Triggs and Kickham were all outrighted off the 40 man roster. Godley, Triggs and Kickham have elected free agency, https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/10/red-sox-outright-5-players.html
