I think Dalbec is perfectly capable of an equal swoon. Even with his hot start, he has shown he has a lot more swing and miss in his game than Chavis had. And as pitchers make some adjustments to Dalbec, such a swoon is certainly a possibility.
Like I said, I am not wild about Chavis, but his swoon consists of 480 PA spread out over 2 seasons. I think it's a bit early to say he cannot and will not ever adjust to anything...
Hopefully opening day is not the deadline.
Pitchers and catchers re[port in 3 weeks. So maybe having a few pitchers on board by then would be a good idea...
So... players get one season to adjust?
And then why are people so high on Dalbec?
After 92 PA, Dalbec had .959 OPS, 8 HR, 39K/10BB
After 91 PA, Chavis had .999 OPS, 7 HR, 24K/14BB
I think he could be the starting 1B in Pittsburgh, but I think the strategy for the Sox boils down to not trading away younger players for established veterans...
I'm as down on Chavis as anyone, but at some point we should probably acknowledge his career consists of just 540 plate appearances. That's just one season's worth of PA...
The whole "all in" tyhing basically means they are not unloading the farm for missing pieces. There are still plenty of free agent players thy can bring on board, either long term or for short/flip deals.
Of those four, Pivetta is the guy with the highest ceiling. It’s just a matter of him reaching it.
Happ is 38 and is trending like a 38yo. He could easily finish with the worst season of those four...
What about something like
Archer ($4mill), Colome ($6mill), La Stella ($6mill), Rodon ($1.5 mill + incentives) and Marisnick ($3mill)?
Somehow I think more of these guys find their way on to Bloom's radar...
The Sox could sign Odorizzi ($14mill), Colome ($6mill per MLBTR), Marisnick (we'll say $3mill) and then deal for Frazier ($4.3mill) and be under the limit, but with very little room to add and stay under. But the team might actually be good. Not great, but good...
And if this was the NFL or the NBA, that strategy has a little more merit. But in MLB, the benefit of punting a season has no impact beyond taking in less cash...
Exactly.
Even if the team is not "all in" as Kennedy said, it at least could become a watchable product that provides many hours of enjoyment for the fans...
