  1. The Wikipedians have already modified his entry. That did not take long. Interestingly, they had him as former GM of the Mets before he was fired...
  2. Because the PTBNL freed up a valuable 40 man roster spot, which has value in itself...
  3. Chatham, Springs, Mazza, Walden. There were other options, but he was absolutely a candidate. Getting something in return just made the call easier...
  4. Can you imagine what the 2018 payroll would have been if Henry did operate as a big market owner?
  5. I'd say there are lots of other factors. In fact, a lot of players seem to think they can be the one who turns a bad organization into a winner, even if their actual history says otherwise...
  6. But where does winning fall? And how often are all things equal? Money and/or years appear to definitely take precedence over winning organizations. Some aging players who have already bankrolled enough money to last several lifetimes occasionally go to a team they think can get them a chance, but players in their prime on that one deal that they have been working for their entire lives seem to prioritize winning far lower on that list, despite what they say to the press...
  7. Yep that’s exactly what Mike Minor said as he signed the largest contract for a SP this off-season. With Kansas City. Probably a big factor in Kevin Gausman accepting his QO. The Giants should win 40% of the time, after all. It adds up...
  8. You've probably come across this when looking on MLBTR. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/01/mets-gm-sent-unsolicited-explicit-images-to-female-reporter-in-2016.html And it probably does not deserve it's own thread, but it seems to have influenced his wikipedia page, which hopefully can get reviewed before it is taken down. Jared Porter From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Born November 23, 1979 (age 41) Wayzata, Minnesota, U.S. Alma mater Bowdoin College (BA) Occupation Genital Photographer, Anthony Weiner impersonator Jared Porter (born November 23, 1979) is an amateur genital photographer and American baseball executive who is the former general manager for the New York Mets of Major League Baseball. He has admitted to sending sexually explicit images to a foreign reporter. Porter was born in Wayzata, Minnesota, and lived there until he was 15 years old, when his family moved to Duxbury, Massachusetts. He attended Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts, and Bowdoin College. He played baseball and hockey for the Bowdoin Polar Bears, and graduated in 2003 with a degree in History.[1] Porter interned for the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2002 and 2003.[2] He joined the Boston Red Sox as an intern in 2004, becoming their director of professional scouting in 2012. He spent two years with the Chicago Cubs before he was hired by the Diamondbacks in the 2016-17 offseason.[3] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jared_Porter I admit. It made me giggle...
  9. And yet he has still lost more time due to injury. Sometimes, age is not the factor. Sometimes, neither is wear. That's why Johnny Venters had 3 TJ surgeries (and nearly a fourth) before he had 250 IP or a 30th birthday party. Yet Bartolo Colon pitched 3500 IP and until he was in his mid 40's without ever having one..
  10. I'd sign him for that. Maybe that's why I'm not a GM?
  11. A rare exception, and even he acquired Rizzo and Arrieta long before his pre-2015 acquisition splash...
  12. Not sure, but he isn’t a starter. All the starters - Kluber, Morton, Smyly, Ray, Urena, Perez, Gausman, Stroman - all signed one year deals...
  13. So... question here. As of right now, the only starting pitchers to receive deals longer than one year are Mike Minor (2 yrs / $18mill from the Royals) and Japanese import Kohei Arihara (2 yrs $6.3mill from TX). Is this because teams are not going big or pitchers are taking pillow deals with bigger paydays in 2022?
  14. Dalbec will drop off, mostly due to not actually playing minor league baseball. Maybe Mata can join the list if he gets off to a good start. Jay Groome is another possibility if he actually pitches..
  15. You do realize big market teams rarely if ever operate that way...
  16. The Reds have no reason to trade Castillo now unless they get blown away. He is under control for several more years and makes very little money. Of course they are going to ask for the moon, three stars and a distant planet to be named later...
  17. The off-season has been glacially slow all around the AL East. The Yankees did not do anything until this week, and one of there big moves was just bringing a player back. The Rays have taken steps backwards replacing Snell with Michael Wacha. The Orioles have done nothing except deal away their SS. And the Blue Jays - the team that was supposed to be poised to make major moves and become competitors - have done less than the Red Sox. Right now the biggest addition to any team in the AL East might be ERod. And Sale has a chance to be the second biggest, especially if Kluber is not healthy....
  18. I do not think anyone thought Chavis was the next home grown power hitter...
  19. I think there are plenty of players who think they can turn any team into a winner, even if they have a long history that says otherwise. They nearly never say they sign for the money, but money is almost always the prime factor. Even Corey Kluber this year only took the one year for the Yankees because he very likely believes he can turn this into a bigger, better deal next season. A 2 year deal hinders him because he would be 36 next time he hit the market. And a team option becomes worst cae scenario for him, because he either does not get the chance to hit the market again if he is good, or he has a rough year and has to prove himself again...
  20. “Rebuilding” is owner-speak for “going cheap.” It’s not something large market teams where real money is at risk actually do...
  21. Not unless Springer learns to pitch...
  22. Is this the NBA or NFL? Tanking doesn’t help much in MLB because draft picks are more volatile and less immediate...
  23. If Bloom was going to be all about selling off players in July, he would need to add a few more short term sellable pieces. Right now the Sox have too many heavily paid immovables to have a fire sale. Also Bogaerts would likely already be gone. His opt out reduces his trade value. He might even have been a Met by now...
  24. Ellsbury was a Boras client who followed his agent’s advice about reaching free agency. If the Sox wanted another leadoff hitting replacement, Crawford was one of the best in the game at the time and was coming off an MVP caliber season. Should the Sox have waited a couple years for a lesser player?
