  1. There probably are. But if Anderson was fatigued, it's really something he has to talk to Cash about before the game...
  2. Yeah there is no data for what the pitching change itself did. And they really can't do that, since it is based on actual game play...
  3. I don’t think Kendrick, who turns 38 next year, is a full time option for 2b. Adam Eaton is an interesting thought. He’s no Bradley, but he might be able to handle CF if he’s flanked by Benintendi and Verdugo...
  4. It’s not a question of whether or not Cash makes mistakes. It’s a question of whether or not he relies solely on the computer, as you said he does in the OP...
  5. Well, like I said, the game plan was clearly to ride the bullpen. Since he was not able to get a good game out of Glasnow, it's possible he decided to change his strategy for game 6, when his back was up against the wall. What are you saying - that he has to use the same strategy every day? And really, we don;t know how much of his "twice through the lineup" plan was based on conversations with Snell, or what he felt he could get out of his pen, or possibly even his desire to use Snell as an emergency reliever the next day. The bottom line is, none of us really know everything behind why Snell was pulled. And leave Snell in or pull him out, the Rays only scored one run and were shutout the final 8 innings. THAT was a much bigger factor in losing...
  6. Of course he said he did not have his good stuff, and he didn't. But the Rays got where they were by riding their bullpen, too. And really, if Anderson doesn't have that WP, do you not see that entire inning being drastically different?
  7. Sure, but he might be less of a guarantee than ERod and Sale...
  8. I'm guessing Jamie Moyer. But then producing more WAR than Darren Bragg is not exactly a major accomplishment...
  9. Do you think that Betts was a .304/.370/.522 hitter in 27 PA vs Snell also mattered? Mookie was the one guy in their lineup with a long history against Snell..
  10. So he was planning on going with the strength of his bullpen?
  11. Or when Jimy Williams started Pete Schourek in the "must win" game 4 of the 1998 ALDS with Pedro available on short rest. Williams was crucified for the call before the game was even played, but Schourek pitched a gem that day. And then Tom Gordon fell apart...
  12. He went with his strength, which was his bullpen all season long. Since he has not really said why he pulled him, a lot of people are jumping to conclusions. But Cash didn't put have the best season in the AL because he did not know what he was doing...
  13. But the thing is, Anderson didn't get rocked that inning. He did give up the double to Betts. But the killer was that he threw a wild pitch to tie the game. If he doesn't throw one, do you think Barnes (much slower than Betts) scores on a grounder to first? And if Barnes is out at the plate, Turner's flyball ends the inning with 0 runs scored. (This does assume Anderson throws the same pitches in different situations, but without the WP it's not hard to envision getting out of the inning, either.)
  14. THe problem wasn't Grady pulling Pedro. It was leaving him in too long. However, he did have the defense that his bullpen was horrible that whole season. Cash, on the other hand, had a terrific bullpen all season long...
  15. Somewhere Pete Carroll is breathing a heavy sigh. Since this is now the most second-guessed coaching decision since his Super Bowl XLIX play-calling...
  16. Is that the pitcher "losing it" or the opposing hitters figuring something out?
  17. And really, all the analytics in the world don't make Mookie a lesser player...
  18. In normal Sox season, 3/4 of those guys would have gone to Pawtucket and been nothing but depth. And the others probably never would have been with the organization. But the Sox had no money to spend and no Pawtucket (Worcester) to send them to...
  19. you didn't have to say "ignore." You strongly implied it when you said their approach backfired. One questionable managerial move (using logic we don;t even know) doesn't mean the entire approach backfired. The Dodgers are run by a former Rays' employee and he undoubtedly uses a similar approach. Maybe the Rays just got out-analyzed...
  20. If you are going to justify Brewer using his xFIP, then shouldn't the following pitchers be considered a lot more questionable based on xFIP? Valdez (4.68). Ryan Weber (5.01) Mazza (5.14) For comparison, the departed Triggs was 4.74 and and Kickham was 4.60. There were several equally bad, but some of the IP totals (like Taylor's 7.1 and Hall's 8.1) make them easier to dismiss for now.
  21. Backfired? They took the 28th highest payroll and made it all the way to game 6 of the World Series. You don't ignore that type of accomplishment because of one week against the best record in MLB that did not work out...
  22. Yeah but Hall was reportedly acquired due to his extremely high spin rate. Both have an option remaining (Hall has 1, Springs has 3). If the Sox think they can get Hall to throw some strikes in Pawtucket, he might be the preferred option of the two. And Hall only had 8 IP last year as well, His game log (all 4 games) might be unimpressive, but it's not necessarily a sample size representative of anything. Not that the 20 IP from Springs paints a clearer picture either. I also omitted Walden, who I suppose could also be DFA'd, and he has he double whammy of having a bad season and not being a Bloom guy. So that makes for 13 candidates for DFA/trade/whatever. And not all the moves will be predictable. Last year, the Sox made some moves that were mildly surprising with regards to who left and who stayed...
  23. Oh I will think they will keep a few of their project pitchers, But keeping, say, Hall over Springs is not really a jaw-dropping move. I named 12 candidates, and I expect numerous players DFA'd from that list, but not all 12. And no one on that list would surprise me...
  24. Brewer was successful?
