The definition of that says it’s not repeatable and holds no predictive value. So anyone who believes in “clutch” should probably ignore that stat.
Also it’s calculated using the Leverage Index, which does increase as innings go on, depending on score. Basically a 1 run lead in the 7th inning is higher leverage than a 1 run lead in the 2nd.
Now with Richards as a starting pitcher, he has to pitch deeper into games t get to some of those truly high leverage situations. And when he does get there, he has a full workload already behind him.
If he closed, this wouldn’t be the case.
So this stat is not really applicable here IMO…
But the year he was a closer for the Angels, his ERA was 2.48. So if you really believe closing is a special skill set that requires a different mentality, he has done well in that role…
That would have been better.
He was the #12 overall pick who fell 11 slots due to dug ability questions. And while still in A ball, numerous players drafted before and after him are already in MLB, including other pitchers taken from high school that year…
But then Barnes has shot well past just “regressing to the norm” all the way to “bullpen liability” recently.
I don’t think he’s as bad as his last few outings, but he needs to right the ship fast, even if it’s getting back to the pitcher he was for the rest of his career…
I’ve run up the white flag in Groome. I know he’s had a slew of injuries and lost a season due to COVID, but he’s been in A ball for 5 years now. I have my doubts he’ll ever stay healthy enough to climb through the system…
Downs is struggling in AAA, but he is also only 22, which makes him about 4.5 years younger than league average, and he also skipped AA and didn’t have a season in 2020. He’s got excuses…
The bridge year one was laughable mass hysteria.
Theo uses that phrase to talk about what I understood to refer to the minor leagues and his drafting philosophy, and fans started freaking out that because wasn’t trying to win. Bear in mind this happened right after the Sox signed John Lackey to the biggest contract ever given to a Sox starting pitcher at the time…
Chad Fox got released that year on July 30, making him I guess the one guy to go from ninth inning to waiver wire. He did catch on with the Marlins and actually became a key member of their bullpen and got himself a World Series ring…
The problem with that pen was it didn’t much in the way of good pitching until Kim was acquired about a third of the way into the season. The weird thing is, that bullpen is remembered for being horribly ineffective, but they were quite good in the ninth inning even prior to acquiring Kim. They only blew three ninth inning leads prior to the trade, and that only resulted in two losses.
Now in the 7th and 8th innings, those guys got hammered like a sorority girl on Jell-O shot night…
I didn’t like them up, but ok.
But 12 saves in 2 years isn’t really a closer. Bobby Jenks and Sergio Santos were the closers on those White Sox teams. Sale’s career high in saves in a season is 8, the same number non-closing Adam Ottavino has for the Sox right now.
Most likely his saves came in games when Jenks or Santiago weren’t available…
For 2022
Houck, Barnes, Whitlock, Taylor, Hernandez, Valdez, Sawamura and maybe either Feltman or Ort. Austin Davis is still in the mix, too.
Rotation: Sale, Eovaldi, Pivetta, Seabold, Acquisition…
