  1. You know who’s really going to be hurt? The bar and restaurant and souvenir stand owners near the ball parks. The servers, bartenders, cooks snd cashiers those owners employ. Those places have to make most of their money during the baseball season; they aren’t going to generate a lot of foot traffic at other times. Every missed home date is a big hit on their revenues and many are already hurting after the past two years.
  2. No different than happens at any large event. Take a look at what the hotel prices are for a college football game at a name school or a NASCAR race. They’ll push $300 a night with a mandatory 2 night stay. Just ran into that in northern Florida this past weekend with the Daytona 500.
  3. The people here? Probably all of us, because it would mean we actually made the major leagues.
  4. His name was on the same list. So were 102 other names. It’s not hard to google the list, though it should be pointed out that whoever did leak the names was in violation of a court order sealing it. I assume it had to do with labor law.
  5. What’s your view on Pedro?
  6. You kill your argument by citing Shaughnessy. Go against anything that clown says and you’ll be right 99% of the time. Edit - My apologies to clowns for the comparison to CHB.
  7. Yep, he was on a list that MLB has admitted was likely full of false positives. Testing was not nearly as sophisticated in 2003 and MLB has said it was often difficult to distinguish between legal and illegal supplements at the time. Ortiz has tried to find out what it was he supposedly tested for, but has been denied because the results are sealed under court order. https://www.vice.com/en/article/qky9ew/mlb-commissioner-gives-david-ortiz-a-pass-on-failed-ped-test-from-2003 MLB was saying this long before this article came out.
  8. LOL Thought about including them, but he never got higher than the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Class A Midwest League in the Seattle organization. Come to think of it, I may have seen David Arias (as he was known then) play when the Rattlers visited the Quad Cities River Bandits in 1996; can't say for sure.
  9. So does he wear a Red Sox hat or a Twins hat? I keeed.
  10. Only person elected by the writers
  11. Nobody gave it a second thought until one poster decided to make an issue of it.
  12. Joyce was a very good ump, widely considered one of the best in the game, who made a bad mistake which cost a kid immortality. The fact that he owned up to it should say something about him. Joe West could be one of the best when he wanted to be; he just didn’t choose to care all that often. Remember, he was the one who called ARod slapping the ball out of Arroyo’s glove and properly awarded Bellhorn the homer in Game 6 of the ALCS in 2004. Like I said, when he choose not to make it about himself, he was pretty good. It just didn’t happen all that often. He’s retired now, so we can’t kick Joe around any more. Hernandez is the poster child for incompetence in every facet of umpiring. There is nothing positive you can say about his work.
  13. From what I've read, 3 nights out of 4 during the season, Diaz is a good umpire. On the bases, he is rated pretty high. Very seldom are his calls overturned there. But he rates very poorly behind the plate. As opposed to Angel Hernandez who sucks 4 nights out of 4.
  14. Do the Giants display a 1904 World Champion flag/banner/placard or just a National League Champions one?
  15. I’m pretty sure there’s a seniority portion as well. A rookie ump could grade out as the best in the business but I doubt he gets a postseason assignment. Now how Diaz got seniority is another question.
  16. Here's an interesting (long) article about the effects of robo-umps in the Low A Southeast League, where they used them this past season. It also looks at other rules changes that have been implemented this and in past minor league seasons at all levels, including pitch clocks, moving the mound back, larger bases, and limits on pickoff attempts. https://www.theringer.com/mlb/2021/10/21/22736400/experimental-rules-atlantic-league-robo-umps
  17. Is this Bogaerts final AB in a Sox uniform?
  18. Yep. It’s been absolutely ridiculous.
  19. Only question is will they hit a meaningless solo homer in the 9th to avert the shutout.
  20. They’ve been playing home run derby the whole series. They’ve scored 28 runs. 23 of them have been on home runs.
  21. Yes I am. Any big league pitcher can make opposing hitters look silly if they have their stuff that day. It’s how often they have their good stuff that separates the great from the good from the average from the bad.
  22. Verdugo will move there, Kike back to center, Dalbec to 1st and Shaw to 2nd.
