    Per Thunder's Game Thread, Houck is starting today. I'm assuming they want 1-2 innings out of him. Not the worst way to see if the every day other thing is possible. Hopefully, they aren't screwing with this kid too much.

    Nah. You had your shot on August 24, 1940 in the first game of a doubleheader against Detroit. Don't you remember? You went 2 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits with one K. For some reason, they never gave you another shot on the mound. Those were TW's actual MLB pitching stats.

    I looked back at his game logs; in his major league career, the fewest days of rest he's ever pitched on is 2. I'm thinking they want to see him on an every other day basis (1 day rest) a few times before trying back to back games. He's young and doing something he's never done before; that seems prudent. Today's going to need the pen; I'm guessing you'll see him today (assuming the Sox are ahead) and it will probably be for multiple innings.

    Not exactly the best example to use from last night. Brasier comes in with two outs and the bases loaded (thanks to Diekman) and gets arguably the Mariners best hitter on a ground ball to short to end the inning. He comes back out in the 7th, allows a weak contact ground ball to 3rd base that’s a hit only because Devers is shifted over in the shortstop position, then gets two outs and is replaced by Strahm. What did a Brasier do wrong? Brasier was used when he’s supposed to be used, i.e. innings 5-7. The problem is the Sox have too many guys who should only be used in innings 5-7.

    Starting to see why the Mariners think they have something special in Kirby; he’s really settled down and is showing dome real good stuff right now.

    Oh, I know. My point was more that it’s not like the guys in front of him are driving in so many men that there’s none for JD. He’s left an awful lot of guys on, especially considering Devers has spent the season on second base.

    Wacha has been hammered most of the night; that error may have opened the door, but it’s not like the inning should have been over. One could say Crawford’s error changed the top of the first.

    That is a very true statement. And it’s not like Devers or Bogie (the guys he’s hit behind most of the season) are over the moon with RBIs.

    Yep. What was it Mussina said? You get around 32 starts a season. You’ll have everything working in 8 of them, something working in 16 of them and nothing working in 8 of them (or words to that effect).

    Well said. There are several posters who, usually in the game threads, just don't seem to get that the other team has major league players too and think that every player on a bad team stinks. They'd have bitched if 1972 Steve Carlton had shut down the Sox because the Phillies that year sucked, One of the "fans" I recall from last night posted something about Ohtani being very hittable this year. That may be, but it only matters if he was hittable last night, and with the stuff he had yesterday, he really wasn't. He's shut down the Sox twice this year now. Said posters also can't seem to fathom that streaks don't go on forever, positive or negative. The Sox are 6-1 on this road trip. Which of us would not have signed up for that a week ago when they left Boston? Anyone who say they predicted that is a liar.

    Base hit pre shift. Of course, his first RBI hit of the night was a routine grounder pre shift as well. The shift giveth and the shift taketh away.

    Any pitcher at the major league level is capable of shutting down any other team. How often they can do it is what separates the great from the good from the average from the poor.

    At least Cordero hit the ball (and the Angels’ OF had to make a pretty good play); there’s always a chance if you put it in play. There’s none on swings and misses.

    Sox have averaged about 7 runs a game over the past month or so while winning at least 2/3 of their games. Why mess with what’s working right now? If they revert to April offense, have at it.
