  1. His numbers w COL did show that. I heard the same about Story. The numbers from HOU are barely large enough to even mention. \ Maybe we'll call him up, only when we play at COL.
  2. 100%. I've made some hefty offers on BTV, so I'm not shy on giving to get. I went into this winter hoping we spent every ounce of resources (money and prospects) on just 3 players- maybe 4. Quality over quantity. We spent years building up the quantity (or depth.) It was time to fill 3-4 needs with top quality players. Now, we see massive depth moves, and I'm not against 3 for 3 trades that improve depth where we need it, but we came up a little short on the 3-4 quality players I hoped for. (Maybe I should have said 1-2 high quality and 1-3 quality) Suarez- high quality and filled one of our top 3-4 needs: check. Contreras- quality but not the high quality big bat I wanted: reluctant check on the quality ledger. Gray- quality but we needed a 2B/3Bman and or powerbat: reluctant check that the cost may have prevented us from doing better at power bat and or 2B/3B. Durbin: a decent get at a need slot. (He may be quality, but he's not proven anything, yet.) Oviedo- into the 5th player range, and again, we got Suarez and Gray, so...??? (Okay, we used SP depth to get Durbin and Gray and Contreras, so we needed some replenishment.) Okay with this move, but no quality "check" given. I K-F: decnet move but not high quality. Up to 6, now Infield depth: #7-8-9... Once again we go for quantity over quality, when we really just had 3-4 major slots to fill and fill well. That being said, we did get better and as Cora said, "We are a more complete team, now."
  3. I'm not sure the revenue vs spending thing is the only measure than counts, and I agree it is important and telling, but my guess is we are above #20 now, even on your chosen, one and only number that counts. Look, I wanted Alosno. The offer was a joke. It was sick. We did end up signing Suarez who might and should do more for the team. Small and mid market teams dont do that. They also dont trade for 2 guys making $20M each. They don't sign utility guys to $6M. They rarely extend 4 young stars to many year deals. Spotrac has us 7th- just $3M for the Padres. We are maybe 20th in revenue to spending. That sucks, but that doesn't mean we aren't spending or that JH is a liar.
  4. Okay, I'm going to just assume your and Fred's use of the term "empty" is hyperbole. I never said we were a "mid market team." Never. Our market is top 10. Our revenue it top 10. Our spending was sickenly low for too many years, but it has not been for 2 years. Of course, much of the spending is replacing lost contracts but the spending has been increasing significantly and many trends that we've all bitched about for years have changed. Of course I want more spending and the reasons given make sense, including the point about revenue vs spending ranking, but why say our spending is empty or that we spend like a small market team? It's just not true. Worse, the untruths keep being repeated. We are not spending like a small market team. For a while we spent like one- or spent like a midmarket team, but we are not small or mid market.
  5. I'd agree that 5+ for 4 years is pretty damn valuable. I'm not sure what the "boatload" was demanded, but I'd be thinking about some very good prospects to offer.
  6. Wow. Two sample sizes in the 60's and he's a "nobody."
  7. It wouldn't make sense to me, either, but I'd like to know who were on said boat.
  8. OMG! That was my mocking point! BTW, name even one mid market team that spend like we have in the last 2 years. Cue sound of cricketts.
  9. Of course we are not "small market." It was a jab at you know who. Again, the wallet is not empty. We spent more than over 2/3rds of the teams and maybe 3/4 this winter and maybe even since the Devers extension. We signed our first long term deal in a while. We extended 4 kids to long term deals in the last 2 years. We extended Deves and crochet to big deals. While the Buehler deal was yet another one and done deal, it was for $21M - the 3rd highest pitcher AAV in Sox history. 2 year deals to Gio, Sandoval and Chapman. We've swung a missed on a few, but we are swinging and spending. Yes, I agree we could and should spend more. I agree the revenue vs spending ranking is troubling and telling, but the wallet is not "empty," unless you mean right now, after spending so much.
  10. It's good to see more promising players added to the infield depth and mix.
  11. It is a very nice thing about his signing with us, but the guy has shown he can hit better than many of the depth guys on the 40. While 2021 seems like a long time ago, Rodgers is only 29. 2021 was no tiny sample size either: 415 PAs and a .798 OPS. His .733 OPS in '22 was better than most seasons by several indfielders on our 40. Best seasons and 2 straight seasons: .917 ('19) .915 ('18-'19) Story (with BOS .741 in '25 and .740 '24-'25 in 760 PAs) .826 ('25) .786 ('24-'25 in 557 PAs) Romy .798 ('21) .761 ('21-'22 in 996 PAs) Rodgers .755 ('25) .655 ('24-'25) Monasterio .721 ('25) Durbin's rookie year .699 ('20) .677 ('20-'21) Kiner-Falefa .664 ('25) Campbell's rookie season .661 ('25) .656 ('24-'25) Sogard Career .819 Story (4460) .717 w BOS (1324) .729 Romy (796) .721 Durbin (506) .714 Rodgers (1957) GG winner .672 Monasterio (592) .664 KC (263) .660 I K-F (3370) GG winner .655 Sogard (190) .610 Eaton (268) .501 Seigler (73)
  12. Sounds about right. Maybe we keep Seigler or Gapser, so we don't have to DFA someone to add Thaiss in an emergency. One can easily be DFA'd. Seigler had a nice year (300 PAs) in AAA, last year, but was under .740 at every other level. Was it a fluke? Maybe Brez wants some time to find out. Gasper is more of the known commodity.
  13. Nieto is making $4M in his first arb year, and while that is more than Durbin, it's less than we paid I K-F. If by "cheaper," we mean more prospects needed to get him, that is true, but some "suspects" are worth holding onto. I'm guessing it's about what the Angels wanted in return vs the return he needed to part with to get Durbin, depth and a comp pick. Brez already parted with a lot of prospects and younger players to get Gray, Contreras & Oviedo. He might have felt he didn't want to overdue using the farm. That being said, I would have really liked seeing us get Nieto, but not knowing who they wanted makes it hard to judge this.
  14. We have enough, but either they wanted too much or Brez was to stingy or just values his prospects highly (maybe not too highly.)
  15. I'm not so sure Romy starts the season on the IL, but if he does, it's hard to know how our management orders the depth at each infield slot. We don't even know who the #1 3Bman and 2Bman are (Durbin or Mayer?) Kiner-Falefa might be the first infielder off the bench at SS, 3B and 2B. It's hard to know where they place returnees Sogard and Eaton among ... Monasterio- 3B, 2B, SS, 1B Seigler: 3B, 1B, C Rodgers (not on 40) GG winner at 2B
  16. Great to see Sox players in uniform!
  17. Durbin on the farm: PAs: 2B+3B/ HRs 433 AAA 30/12 224 AA 15/4 221 A+ 13/1 274 A- 16/7 AA+ AAA 45 & 16 in 657 PAs A+/A- : 29 & 6 in 495 PAs
  18. That's the big "if" and there is also a big "if" on Story staying healthy. We don't need to play I K-F everyday to make him earn that $6M. Here were the innings at 2B-SS-3B in 2025: 2B: 472 KC, 402 DHam, 288 Romy, 165 Rafaela, 65 Sogard, 57 Mayer (Campbell will likely bs in AAA, DHam is gone, Romy is hurt & Rafaela should play FT CF as Cora pointed out.) 3B: 972 Bregman, 249 Mayer, 102 Toro, 73 Eaton, 39 Sogard, 2 Romy, 1 DHam (Breggie & Toro are gone.) SS: 1149 1371 Story, 69 DHam, 5 Sogard, 3 Mayer
  19. The "small market team" that is a top 5 team in revenue.
  20. We also can use Contreras, so I'm fine cutting Gasper. If we end up needing a catcher, we can add Thaiss to the 40.
  21. Oviedo, Crawford or Sandoval will be the 5th starter. The other two might be in the pen. That's assuming the top 8 SP'ers are all healthy on opening day- which is unlikely. Assuming all healthy. We have to sure 4 RP'ers. 2 from Oviedo, Crawford and Sandoval Moran & Watson (AAA: Kelly & Samaniego) This keeps all options on the table, until we find out more about Moran and Watson. If we add someone like Wilson, I may start Crawford in AAA, if he's not sharp, or put Sandoval on the IL, so we can keep all options alive, for a while. Now, if Moran sucks in ST'ing, I'm fine with a DFA. I trust Cora & Brez to know if he looks promising or not.
  22. Yes, so put off having to decide now. Keep Moran and one more option.
  23. Agreed, but many teams probably have the same "if" scenario.
  24. I was being sarcastic, but I do think $6M is a lot for a "small market team" to spend on a non starter.
