  1. If you just have robo umps call balls and strikes, no umps will lose their jobs. You'll still have an ump somewhere behind home plate to make other calls in that area. If I were an ump, I'd be happy to have that task taken off my hands. Plus, no more umps getting hurt on foul tips or catcher wiffs.... well mostly anyways.
  2. Do we win 108 games last year, if we had JD? It's my opinion that Cora is a big reason we have a powerhouse team.
  3. I meant more about the city. (I live in Sugar Land.) Many Astros players are doing worse or much worse than last year. Only a tiny few are doing better.
  4. Making bad calls might make things more interesting, but not in a positive way. I don't think robo-calling balls and strikes is going to make a big difference in how fans watch the game or like the game. The games will go faster. Pitchers and hitters will now know what they need to do to get things done. We'll soon get used to not seeing a fat ump standing right over the catcher's shoulder. That alone is worth it. The no mistakes on balls and strikes is just icing on the cake.
  5. I hear you, but the MLBTR arb estimates just came out, and I couldn't resist.
  6. Yes, I know, but you know how I love small sample sizes. Look, my opinion can change over the years, but as of right now, Cora is the best Sox manager I have ever seen. He seems to have a nice balance between loyalty to the players and vets and making everyone feel like they are needed. He uses analytics better and with more success than any previous Sox manager. He got these kids playing fundamentally solid baseball by cutting down on boneheadedness. He got this pen to finish in the top 10 in MLB this year. He kept using Leon and Vaz despite the sub .575 OPS. Brilliant! Instead of our players entering prime years declining, like last year, almost all improved not just over their 2017 numbers but 2016 as well. He exudes a confident calmness that rubs off on the players. He doesn't always take the hot hand out like Tito and JF did to a fault. He got Sale the rest he needed...and others, too. To me, he does many of the things I prefer managers do. I realize I'm biased in many areas, and he seems to do more of what I like.
  7. Houston does not seem as pumped up as last year. I'm hoping we take 2 in Boston, but let's start with game one. Isn't it great to have a healthy and strong... Chris Freakin' Sale!
  8. Tito did a great job, but he also had some off times. I have yet to see Cora have those. To me, it's not close.
  9. Good point. He'll get hurt the first time he swings a bat or tries to get out of the batters box on the way to 1B. I could see the Rays or Guardians making a move for him. If the Astros lose Keuchel and Morton...
  10. We could maybe trade... $6.5M Moreland $5.0M Nunez $4.5M Vaz $2.3M Thornburg $1.1M Smith That's $19.4M but with more minor roles to fill- maybe from within ... Moreland/Pearce> Chavis/Ockimey/Travis/Dalebec Nunez> Holt/Hernandez/Chavis/Dalbec/Lin/Quiroz/Pedey Vaz> Swihart Thronburg & Smith gave us nothing to have to replace. Use the $19M to sign Garret Richards & Jeurys Familia. Is this enough to strongly compete? Sale, Price, Porcello, ERod, Richards, Johnson, Velazquez Familia, Barnes, Brazier, Wright, Hembree, Workman, Poyner 1. Betts RF 2. Pedey/Holt 2B 3. Beni LF/Bogey SS 4. JD DH 5. Bogey SS/ Beni LF 6. Devers/Holt/Chavis/Hernandez 3B 7. Chavis/Ockimey (rule 5)/Holt 1B 8. JBJ CF 9. Leon/Swihart C This assuming we look to reset the tax. (Big assumption)
  11. Or, Dodgers.
  12. That would help, but we'll still be tight, We should have given Pablo the same type last-year option we gave HRam.
  13. Yes, the zone was harder to see, but I still think it was worse in previous games.
  14. Exactly, and it seems like if he makes a 49% call, it's like he made a 2% call. I, for one, am not one to think that every choice a manager makes has a clear right or wrong choice, or even a clear best choice out of many good or bad options.
  15. The best part is that Boone will likely be back.
  16. His fat ass is blocking the light at the end of the tunnel!
  17. I think Price is our best starter for the pen, so I start him just one game (#4). If Eovaldi starts Sunday, he does get one more day of rest. He started Monday, so his normal day would be Saturday. I'm okay with starting Eovaldi game 3 and 7, but I'd prefer Porcello in that role. Game 3 is often the biggest game. Game 7, of course, is the biggest, if it gets there. Sale would go 1 and 5, both also huge games. I don't think Porcello needs rest. He sat forever before the releif stint and only pitched 60 something pitches last night.
  18. I think the only way Sale could be used is for a clean inning. You don't save him, in case someone falters. You save Kimbel for Sale in the 9th, assuming Porcello gets through one more inning cleanly. Again, I have no issue with Cora's choices. He's by far the best manager we've ever had. It's not even close.
  19. You guys are all projecting what might have happened and ignoring what did happen. I actually see them judging in hindsight. Kimbrel was a good choice, but he did poorly and came oh so close to losing the game. To hear someone say, "For last nights game, Kimbrel was not better than any other alternative." is pure hindsight.
  20. Yes, and that was always part of the Sox managerial problems-- this overblown need to make the veteran players happy at the expense of what was best for the team. JM thought he was doing Buck a favor by letting him be on the field for the celebration- never thinking he might be sealing his fate as a goat. (Note: I never see Buck as a goat. He was a major reason we got to that series, and I only blame McNamara.)
  21. Repost: Here's how 2019 looks with MLBTR's arb estimates included: In Luxury Tax Dollars 31.1 David Price 22.0 JD Martinez 20.1 Rick Porcello 18.7 Mookie Betts 13.8 Dustin Pedroia 13.5M Chris Sale 11.9 Xander Bogaerts 7.9 Jackie Bradley Jr. 6.5 Mitch Moreland 5.0 Eduardo Nunez (with PA bonus reached) 4.8 Eduardo Rodriguez 4.5 Christian Vazquez 3.4 Brock Holt 2.3 Tyler Thornburg 2.3 Sandy Leon 1.5 Matt Barnes 1.4 Brandon Workman 1.4 Steven Wright 1.2 Heath Hembree 1.1 Carson Smith 1.1 Blake Swihart $172M Total (21 players) $2.2M Min for 4 MLB roster players $2.2M 15 players in minor leagues on 40 man roster $14.5M Player Benefits $18.5M Sandoval $209M Total That's exactly the CB Threshold next year, so if we want to reset, we'll have to trade equal salary to what we add. My guess is, it depends on winning a ring or not this year, but after 2020, we will try to reset one way or another. If we try to stay below the $40M line, what can we get for $39M?
  22. The Dodgers reset their tax also. They seem to keep all their big named players at what ever it takes. I'd bet on the Dodgers keeping him. My guess is the Yankees get Harper and at least 2 from Keuchel, Morton and Happ.
  23. Big health gamble, but he should be cheaper than many others.
  24. I'd be surprised, if it doesn't have 3 newbies. Tanaka & Sev return. Gray has to win a spot or will be traded.
  25. Probably not, but when another team spends $180M more than you in those 3 rings years, it kind of weakens your argument.
