We will likely experience some injuries. Hopefully, none will be major or to key players, but we do have an opportunity to get more out of these players who were not with us all last year, either due to injury, trade or being in the minors: Pedroia (played 3 games) Devers (played 121 games) Pearce (played just 50 games with the Sox) Vazquez (played 80 games) Moreland (played 124 games) Betts, JD, Beni, JBJ and Bogey all played less than 150 games Eovaldi (Only with us for 2 months and 11 starts) Sale (Only started 5 games after July 28th) ERod (missed significant time- had just 23 starts) Braiser (didn't join us until after 3 months of the season went by) Wright (only started 4 games) Poyner (just 22 IP) Thornburg (just 24 IP) Walden, Scott, Workman and others missed some time. There's a lot of reasons we could be better next year, assuming we replace Kimbrel & Kelly in kind. Here's what we stand to lose: PA- Player - OPS 195 HRam .708 143 Kinsler .604 27 Phillips .520 IP- Player -ERA 74 Pomeranz 6.08 66 Joe Kelly 4.39 62 Kimbrel 2.74 14 CSmith 3.77

Here's an updated look at our 2019 budget in Tax dollars and arb estimates: 31M Price 22M JD 20.6 Porcello 19.5 M Betts 17.0 Eovaldi 15.0 Sale 13.8 Pedey 11.3 Bogey 8.9 JBJ 6.5 Moreland 6.3 Pearce 5.0 Nunez 4.5 Vaz 4.3 ERod 3.5 Holt 3.3 Barnes 3.0 Leon 3.0 Wright 1.8 Thornburg 1.3 Hembree 1.0 Workman 1.0 Swihart $203.6 Sub Total +$18.5 Pablo +$4.4M Others on 40 man roster +$14.5M Player benefits $241M Total That's $35M over the limit. Cots has us at $240M.

You weren't against the contract day one, were you? I did not like the deal, but I thought it was necessary and sided on the side of being for it. I thought Price was the best choice due to being the most likely to be very good for a longer time than other choices that year or the previous year.

To all the posters who bashed Price or the Price signing, I have two questions: Do you think it was worth it to sign him? Are you happy with the rest of his deal or did you hope he had opted out this winter?

I don't think the decline after 32 is all that steep. Anyways, half the years are uo to 32,

I'm sure they thought long and hard about Eovaldi's contractual effect on 2020, 2021 and 2022. I'm not being critical. I trust they know what they are doing, but I also think there is a re-set plan somewhere in the next 3 years. (They could end up trading Eovaldi at the point we re-set, if they so choose.)

One year deals are easy, when the reset is obviously not going to be next year. The sweating starts after 2019 and 2020 and 2021.

I'm still not sure we went over the $40M mark this year. It seems strange to go over by less than a million.

I wonder what Wright, Johsnon & Velazquez's values are in trade. Add Swihart and maybe Chavis, Ockimey or even Hembree and see what kind of RP'er(s) we can get. I'm not advocating trading them just for the sake of it, I'd want a decent return.

Yes, but when I here someone say we got Eovaldi to cover for losing Porcello, I think maybe getting Eovaldi means we chose him over Porcello and not to cover for him, in case we lose him. Losing Porcello will likely be because of Eovaldi. I'm fine with getting Eovaldi. I'm fine with us maybe being a little worse down the line, because we have to let Porcello (or Sale) go.

I have said re-setting after 2019 might make more sense, especially the way so many big contracts all end after next season, but it also won't take a whole lot to keep a strong enough team together for one more year... maybe no Sale, Moreland and Pearce, and we go with Wright, Johnson, Chavis and Dalbec.

I totally agree, but the talk here is about how we may take up some slack, if we don't replace Kimbrel & Kelly in kind. Instead of trading for a better hitting catcher, we could just hope Vaz does 100-150 points better, Pearce's full year vs less this year and maybe something from Pedey or an uptick from Nunez.

I do think Vaz could hit like 2017 again, but more likely he might hit .683, which is 150 points higher than our catcher OPS this year! Hell, .633 is a 100 point upgrade!

I'm thrilled. I think some people seem to think I fret about our future every minute of the day. I don't. I love how DD has run the team. I love where we are for the next 2 years. We've had 3 good years and a ring with 2 more great chances for another ring. That's a tremendously long window DD built, with some help from Ben's farm, I might add. I'm perfectly okay with a year or two rebuild starting 3 years from now. I'm not down at all. Merry Christmas & a Happy TWO Years!

They could also go for depth by signing two from Happ, A Sanchez or Morton plus one or two from Britton, Ottavino or Familia, it might work out better. Trade Gray for a useful piece.

True, but there are a few pitchers with stark differentials, especially with Swihart and his small sample sizes. Sale 2.42 w Leon (319) 3.40 w Vaz (53 IP) O IP with Swihart (very telling.) (3.02 with Flowers in 552 IP/ 2.51 w AJP in 226/ 3.53 w Avila in 112) Price 2.83 w Leon (194 IP) 4.32 w Vaz (263) 5.72 w Swihart (11) (2.85 w Molina 473/3.06 w Jaso 191) Porcello 4.14 w Leon in 483 4.15 w Vaz in 134 4.59 w Swihart in 118 (4.17 w Avila in 578/ 4.32 w Laird in 296) ERod is about even 4.00 w Leon in 99 4.08 w Swihart in 71 4.24 w Vaz in 276 Eovalid's sample sizes are small, but he did better with Vaz. If you look at just Sale and Price, one could argue keeping Leon is the right choice, and trading Vaz could work, if the new guy (like Cervelli) can work with Porcello, Eovaldi and ERod. Since ERod doesn't seem to be affected by who catches him, and Eovaldi is kind of new anyways, and Porcello might be gone after next year, maybe trading Vaz and getting a better hitting catcher makes more sense than I first thought.

I understand. He may also think Cervelli or someone esle is as good or better than Vaz or Leon in those areas I promote so much. He certainly knows more about opposing catchers than I do (and our own, too!)
