  1. Okay, we keep Betts, don't reset, miss the playoffs and get nothing for Betts. We suck for 3 years, instead of 1, and my guess is you'll blame Bloom.
  2. Correct, but not so absurd now, is it?
  3. I've wanted that deal for a long time. Now that we have Moreland, we don't really need a 1Bman, but I'd still do it. I'd even give $3-4M a year.
  4. Strippling, Gonsolin and Cartaya, by themselves, are all better than the comp pick. All three together would be way better. Gonsolin and Strippling are better than anything we have on the farm or just called up. Maybe DHern outdoes both of them, but as of now, both are better, IMO. We may be able to get Ruiz & Gonsolin and maybe Strippling or Downs added on.
  5. That's absurd. The only reason we are hearing "garbage" is because Price is part of the deal- yes, the guy you hoped would not opt out. Betts straight up for just Gonsolin, Strippling, Gray or Cartaya is better than a comp pick, and we could get 3-4 without adding Price.
  6. Maybe a miracle happens.Maybe saying it would take a miracle is wrong. Maybe we have a better chance than I think. But to me, it's a sure bet that if we go for it all in 2020, we'd be setting ourselves up for a deeper and wider cliff. The only way we could avoid it is if Henry decides to spend wildly for the next 2-3 years, and that seems highly unlikely. We'd have spent some already had that been an option. The only reason we've held off trading top assets is to keep some semblance of putting an competitive and exciting team on the field for 2020, so ticket sales do not crater and NESN doesn't tank.
  7. The short-sightedness is astounding.
  8. Bloom is likely trying for the best deal and feels there is a chance to do better, otherwise Betts would be traded by now, or an announcement would be made that he is going nowhere and talks have ended. I know we can get impatient as fans during a slow winter, but I'm glad Bloom is not rushing into anything.
  9. Better than the goal of thinking you can just keep spending more and more to plug several holes on a team already spending way more than anyone else. Trading Betts will not get us even close to having the best farm, but when you have a team that has so many holes to fill and a budget in need of a reset, improving the farm and the future financial outlook is a logical plan. Let's make the cliff as short as possible.
  10. Betts and Price (and $9M a year x 3) for maybe 2 or 3 of these four: Gonsolin, Strippling, Gray and Cartaya might be the best we can expect. Even this, is better than a comp pick and still having Price on the books.
  11. Buffoonery is getting nothing for Betts, not resetting and watching us finish 2020 with 85 wins.
  12. If we reset, we'll be open for business. There's no reason to think we can't be the top bidder. There's only a few teams that will bid close to $350/10 or more for anybody.
  13. Yes, actually 2010-2011 were not that good, but pretending our farm is okay because all but our DH came from a farm mostly long ago, is not realistic. Our farm is pretty barren, right now, and has been for 2-3 years. When you have a long stretch like that, it usually means trouble.
  14. Nobody is saying the farm was barren 3-10 years ago.
  15. Of course. I realize it's a huge risk. I also understand the risk is much greater when you put so many eggs in just one basket, but I believe Betts is a one of a kind player. I'm all in.
  16. If the 12 years brings the AVV down $2-3M, it may be worth it. If Betts is worth $380M/10, paying him $420M/12 may work out better. We save $3M a year for 10 years then are essentially paying him $20M x 2 his last 2 years, which by then may not be a burden.
  17. We can have the best of both worlds. Build our youth foundation by trading Betts for the best offer. (Including Price would help the budget for 3 years.) Reset the tax. Bring Betts back at $420M/12.
  18. Even Lux OR May isn't happening. If that's what we hold out for, we'll get nothing.
  19. Plus, the local bars never line up their happy hours with recess.
  20. You are selecting one branch of the many branches of Central American ancestry. Then, you are assuming that branch is responsible for centuries of bloodshed and exploitation. Then, you blame communism for the mess. I wasn't aware the Pipil were commies way back when, but your friends must know more than I do. When you label a vast region as having a "bloody history," it implies more so than the norm or other vast regions. I'd really prefer to not get political, but letting statements like that just ride on is something I just can't do.
  21. You can for abstract discussion, but this thread is about a possible trade, and yes, years of control and contractual obligations mean a hell of a lot.
  22. To some, "history" only begins when the white man began recording it.
  23. He's hit 61 HRs his last 955 ABs (.791 OPS)- 3 yrs. That's better than my expectations for Chavis. His career OPS vs RHPs is .816. (31 HRs per 650 PAs) Moreland is at .782 the last 3 years. He has a .789 career OPS vs RHPs. Adams would have been good depth and might even be better than MM. I'm not worried, because it's a lost season anyways, but I do wonder.
  24. "Bloody history?" What does that mean? More than other areas of the world? It's so clear to anyone with even half a brain much of the Central American problems were and still are fueled by USA attempts at exploiting them. That's not to say tings were rosy beforehand. Democratic leaders were overthrown and replaced by bloody dictators supported by the US. Cuba was no shining star of human rights before Castro, either. (I'm not defending Castro, but look at non-socialist countries in the area.) I lived in Mexico for 4 years and have traveled to many Latin American countries several times. My sister has lived in Brazil for 26 years. I major in political science at Notre Dame and focused on Latin American Studies. That doesn't mean I know more than you or anyone else- the same as living there for 9 years.
  25. Holt might be waiting for a Betts trade to free up space for us to sign him... or not.
