It's not so simple. Getting Witt would cost us half our top 10 prospects, so it's not Witt vs Arias, it's Witt vs Arias, Eyanson, Witherspoon, Gonzales and maybe Primera or Delzine. That's not just "liking Arias' chances." It's more complicated. BTW, how about the hype machine on Tolle, Early and Abreu & Rafaela from a few years back? At some point, every great player was a prospect and many of them were "hyped." That being said, I'm not against trading top prospects and even Arias. I put SS in my top 3 high need area list with pitching and catcher. Grossly overpaying at deadlines is not the best way to build a team. Brez has proven is pretty damn good with winter trades and mostly misses on in season trades. That's not to say he should never do any, but summer deals are very costly- often much more costly than winter ones. Brez needs to make a couple deals by AUG 3rd. I would not empty the farm to do it, but we don't need to be overly stingy, either.

While agree a big bat is about as important as adding a pitcher, I don't see us swinging 3+ trades. We will NOT trade the farm away. Some, but not a big chunk of it. We need to be economical (thanks JH & Co.) and fill a positional need with a big bat. We have too many DHs as it is. If Anthony returns, he's the DH, unless an OF'er needs a day off. Yoshida has been on of the teams best batters for over a month and is fine as a platoon DH. Romy ha sssucked out of the gate, but he's been one of MLB's best bats vs LHPs for 2+ years. A Yoshida-Romy platoon is not even the 3rd worst batting slot on the team, so why look there? Now, one can argue Monasterio & Siegler have been doing pretty well as middle infielders over about the same period as Yoshida, but neither have longer periods of batting success as Masa & Romy. Wong is having a good year, but Narvaez has sucked big time, especially on offense. Catcher, SS and 2B are way worse batting slots than DH. Your scenario makes little sense. If there was a better offer for Contreras STL would have known about it and taken it. They in no rush to trade him. Also. I'm pretty sure GMs come to agreements with one side saying "Hold on while I'm working on something else, and before you decide to trade who we want, give me a call." I think Brez weighed the cost of Contreras vs what the cost for Alonso would be, and realized Contreras was a better deal, unless Alonso took $xxx. Obviously, it was too low for Alonso to take, so he signed with BAL and we said yes to STL. This is just conjecture- just like many things said on this site everyday.

The Contreras trade looks like a solid steal. Gray does, too, but there is more TBD to that trade. The Oviedo trade has not helped or hurt, yet. The Durin trade now looks like a win (or tie), but it's still TBD. The under-the-radar deal that some disliked on day one was Perales for Bennett. While I do think we needed another big bat, I can't roast a guy for pulling off these many good deals, and this is after last season's Crochet deal!

The only way Fred will ever get off Rafaela's A$$ is if he wins the triple crown.

IMO, Brez knew he could get Contreras for cheap, and that's why his offer for Alonso was absurdly low. We were never going to get Schwarber, and I doubt we wanted a DH more than BAL wanted a 1Bman. We had Duran-Anthony as the DH. Yoshida & Romy was a very capable back-up DH platoon. DH was not on the radar. And no, Gaspar had nothing to do with any of these choices. Nada. Suarez and Durbin over a Bregman signing was a choice.

LOL Most of the Sox best hitters have been lefties. We hit LHPs about 100 points better than RHPs, this year, and we face RHPs about 70% of the time. Why is getting a RHB better than a LHB?

To me, Mead is the 2017 2Bman not Arraez. That's the other reason why we trade for a rental. Also, Arraez is not good on D. He was showing signs of decline before 2026: .861 in 2023 .739 in 2024 .719 in 2025 I'd prefer B Lowe, if PIT is a seller.

I hear things like "Call Arias up, now" a lot, but normally it's followed with something like "what do we have to lose" or "let's see what he has." I don't get the "crowning" vibe. There was some for Anthony, especially after his half season of .800+ productivity, but I keep hearing all this talk that "everyone" or almost everyone and implying they expected greatness from all our prospects and from day one. I was excited about the big three. I was surprised they handed KC the FT job on opening day 2025, but I don't recall even a majority thinking it made sense, let alone were liking it. Many felt Anthony was a key to the 2026 line-up, myself included, but nobody felt it was a slam dunk, and almost everyone felt we needed another big bat "just in case..."
