  1. IMO, we need 3 SP'ers, but even two really good ones may be hard to acquire. \ I agree. If we don't add two, we won't even keep pace with the 4 teams above us, let alone gain on any. It all comes down to additions to the rotation and how well they do.
  2. He should have been platooned, but we had 4 left fielders, and nobody to play RF well enough to do it. How bad do you have to be for you to think a player should be platooned? Dugo vs LHPs: .609 in '23 (2 HRs in 135 PAs .237 BA/ .319 OBP (.666 in games when a LHP started) .693 in '22 (1 HR in 127 PAs) .266 BA/.329 OBP) (.550 in games started by LHP) I'm curious to see, if the Yanks play him vs a LHP, when they have someone who is a better defender and has better splits v LHPs than Dugo. I would not be surprised if the Yanks trade him, after getting Soto.
  3. I do think they wanted to trade him, but I don't think they would have, if they did not like the return. I also think they wanted a RH'd OF bat, and the money saved helped them get O'Neill, and there is $4M left over for future spending, perhaps. I like the return and O'Neill addition more than Dugo, so to me, the main reason is secondary.
  4. Agreed, but I would prefer we sign 2 really good pitchers and save the farm for later moves needed ot to let them play for us for low salaries. If we have to trade for 1 pitcher, okay. I'd prefer we not have to trade 2 of our top 3 prospects plus more second tier prospects for 2 SP'er.
  5. Indeed. Yes, many teams are looking for upgrades to their rotations, but there are more good SP'ers on the market than I have seen in a long time. Most likely TOR, NYM or NYY gets Yamo. Maybe one of those who miss out on Yamo gets Snell. Perhaps a bidding war starts on Monty and Imanaga, but I think the Sox can and should win the bidding on Monty. If we do, the key will be to get one of the best tier 3 guys or trade for a good one.
  6. Why not? I'm talking $4M per year. If the Sox are offering $30M and the Mets $33M, tops, we could offer $34M and win.
  7. He probbaly will a couple times, but maybe O'Neill will haunt the Yanks more.
  8. If it's between $32M or $30M for Yamo and $29M or $27M for Monty, that $4M could really make a difference. Sale comes off the books after '24, so that "extra $4M" can be absorbed going beyond '24. It does not mean Brez will pay $4M more than planned, but it does give him some more wiggle room.
  9. I hope we don't end up being forced to trade for two decent SP'ers. (There goes the years of farm building.)
  10. They are, but someone will pay the full $700M, at some point. (Maybe, the next owner.)
  11. I'm not so sure about who will be better in 2024: Dugo or O'Neill. (Dugo's numbers may inflate due to Yankee Stadium- assuming he is not traded.) Maybe the "extra $4M" allows us to get Yamo, Monty or Snell.
  12. I'd guess he does fine for two years and decent the next two. Just stay healthy! I love a top defensive SS.
  13. I was not high on Drohan, so I'm fine with all the Rule 5 switch-outs and the Slaten trade. We basically have 2 choices for the 26 slot, not one: Mata and Slaten. Good moves. I may be in the minority for liking the Dugo trade. We got 3 pitchers and added $4M to the winter budget by swapping out Dugo for O'Neill.
  14. So, the window would be for 2 years, then reset? Or, just bite the bullet and pay the mega tax until you get #5? I can't see how we spend $1.2B and reset in 3 years, unless we trade Story and someone else (Devers or one we just signed?)
  15. I think Drohan was over-ranked, but according to SP's, we basically traded #15 Drohan and Ammons & cash for Slaten
  16. Agreed, unless we spend large but not on SP'ers. (not likely)
  17. So, you think being over the tax line for more than 3 years is doable?
  18. I agree and have said the same thing. There is no excuse to not go right up to the second line. The second line gives us close to $77M to spend AAV. With Sale's deal coming off the books after '24, a couple of longer term deals should be more than acceptable. If we try to nickel and dime, even $77M, by going with shorter term deals and spreading the wealth over 6-8 new additions, I might still get out the pitch fork. We need to focus on 3-4 quality players and get over the quantity phase we saw under Bloom. (There was good reason to go quantity in Bloom's early years: our budget was tight, and our 40 man roster and farm had too many holes to name.) SP1 SP2 2B C, RF or SP3 If it was up to me, I'd spend $77M AAV on just the top 3 slots I listed. We could even trade for one of the top 4 slots and spend the full $77M on just 3 or spend on 4... $30M Yamo $27M Monty $10M 2B $10M C, RF, SP3
  19. No question about that, so far. 4 years to go to try and salvage some value lost in years 1-2.
  20. The guy is a better defender than I imagined. He was not post prime when we signed him. We knew about the park affects on his numbers, but his away numbers were nearly identical to Bogey's. I liked the signing, but the injuries and rehabs killed us.
  21. We do know he pulled the offer to Nate, so that one is on him. I'm not sure he would have been allowed to outbid the Rays for Eflin or give him 4 years, but I doubt the size of that deal was on JH. He also guessed wrongly on both $10M/1 pitchers: Kluber and Richards. That's not on JH. Yes, we don't know how the budgets given to our GMs are set up. Probably, the longer term deals need pre-approval. Apparently the Nate one was.
  22. I'm glad JH did not decide to pony up $701M, unless it was going to end up being $1.2B, because we still need pitching. Just pony up $500-600M and get us two of the top 3-4 remaining SP'ers on the board. Yamo Monty Snell and maybe Imanaga
  23. I liked other options, too, and not all of them worked out well. I do think it was a legitimate stab at fan appeasement. Too little- too late, of course.
  24. I'm not starting to be convinced: I am convinced. It's been a 4+ year dupe. (It actually started when we did not bring Kimbrell and Kelly back or replace them in kind. The near miracle in '21 just bought them more time with the fanbase. Whether the dupe continues is up for debate, IMO.
