  1. Nice how you think you know I reacted to those games played. Saying Jansen added drama is not saying I was worried sick. Keep up the straw man building. Jansen add much drama to those games. He ended up getting the out that was needed, but there was drama and excitement. Drama does not equate to blOwn save, losses and worrying myself sick. Read the game threads: do I sound worried? I'm one of the most relaxed person you'll ever meet, but you can go on constructing people's traits in your mind. I don't need advice from a quack who can't even get the diagnosis right.
  2. The drama was real. It was not imagined. You must not have watched the 2018 WS to think that wasn't drama. Either that, or you have a way different definition of what drama is. That was crazy drama. Just because he pulled out of it, doesn't mean it was not drama. Saying there has been drama with them both takes nothing away from their great careers. It has nothing to do with the time periods being discussed.
  3. Truth with evidence hurts, doesn't it?
  4. We should avoid signing Soto, because we have nobody to teach him defense.
  5. We all know O'Neill is never going to play 150+ games and Duran can sit vs many lefties, so it's not like Rafaela as the 4th OF'er means 200 PAs. Last year, we were pretty set with Yoshida in LF, Duvall in CF and Dugo in RF (Turner at DH.) We ended up with this: GS in OF 135 Dugo 84 Yoshida 79 Duvall Our 4th through 9th OF'ers got 189 GS'd: 82 Duran 47 Ref 19 Abreu 18 Tapia 11 Rafaela 11 Kike (who might have been the FT CF'er had Story not got hurt) We also don't know if Anthony will be up for all of 2025, or that he will be handed 155 starts in CF/RF. When has Duran played 150 games plus?
  6. We were clearly talking about Jansen and Kimbrel with the Sox. We did not mention it being about Kimbrel's last few months with us, but I think we both assumed it was understood. They were both incredibly full of drama with us, not counting Kimbrel in his early time with us. No doubt, their careers were not filled with drama more than the norm, but Jansen has pitched in 14+ ML seasons. First 7 seasons: 0.893 WHIP 1.93 FIP 5.3 K/BB Next 6 seasons 0.988 WHIP 3.02 FIP 4.4 K/BB 1+ seasons with BOS 1.297 WHIP (before todays 3 men on base in 1 IP) 3.76 FIP 2.5 K/BB Clearly, he has dropped off in effectiveness: 26 BB and 3 HBP in 50 IP w BOS is drama. Kimbrel before BOS (6 seasons) 0.927 WHIP 1.72 FIP 4.3 K/BB First 2 seasons with Sox 0.861 WHIP 2.07 FIP 4.8 K/BB 2018: 0.995 WHIP 3.13 FIP 3.1 K/BB 2018 Playoffs 1.59 WHIP (5.91 ERA) 1.8K/BB (10 BB+HBP and 10 Ks) That was drama galore. We are talking drama, not happiness or save %.
  7. It's all relative, though, right? It seems like defense has dropped off a cliff all across MLB, since I was a kid. That being said, the Sox have been below average more times than not in recent years. However, the last 20 years, fangraphs has us ranked 11th. DRS 11th. UZR/150 4th! Perhaps surprisingly, since 2019 (5 years,) we look to be maybe 18th to 24th, if you average 4 numbers (I don't count Flg%.) 11th UZR/150 20th DRS 21st fangraphs 28th Flg% 30th OAA
  8. Maybe, I'm biased. I grew up playing a lot of baseball all the way through college and some afterwards. I practiced, a lot. It seemed like defense came naturally to me, as well as baserunning and baserunning instincts. I did practice defense, a lot, but I practiced hitting way more and never got good at it. I walked enough to not be too bad on offense, but I never learned how to hit. Maybe, I never had a good hitting coach. I don't remember anyone coaching me on D, and I think because they realized I did not need any coaching on D.
  9. Our next few games... 4/15 CLE (11:10 am) Playing well 4/16 CLE 4/17 CLE 4/18 CLE (1:35) 4/19 @PIT Like last year, we play them while doing well 4/20 @PIT 4/21 @PIT (1;35) OFF 4/23 @CLE 4/24 @CLE 4/25 @CLE (1:10) 4/26 CHC 4/27 CHC (4:10) 4/28 CHC OFF 4/30 SFG 5/1 SFG 5/2 SFG (1:35)
  10. I did not mean to imply you claimed it was exclusively bad coaching. I do not think we have emphasized defense, enough in the minors or majors. I tend to think we neglect defensive skills when acquiring players- prospects and vets, so we start off below the curve. Again, I am not disagreeing with you, but maybe I give more weight to aspects other than coaching than you do. Maybe.
  11. I'm not praising Jansen. I just pointed out his not allowing any runners to score, until 1 today. 4 saves- no blown saves. Yes, too much drama for my liking. (He did miss a lot of ST'ing, so maybe he can improve on that.)
  12. That's absurd. Kimbrell's drama his last year here was real, especially in the 2018 playoffs. 14 IP 13 Hits 9 BB 3 HBP 25 men on base in 14 IP (1.786) You forgot that drama? Jansen's drama is real, too. 5.2 IP 8 BB Jansen's 1.276 WHIP with the Sox in 2023 was the worst of his career, and no other year was even close. (1.297 career w BOS, before today's 1 IP and 3 men let on base.
  13. Yankee SP'ers 4.50 Cortes (4GS/22 IP) 1.72 Rodon (3GS/15.2 IP) 3.68 Schmidt (3GS/14.2) 2.12 Stroman (3GS/17.0) 3.00 Gil (2GS/9 IP) 1.50 Poteet (1GS/6IP) Red Sox Starters 3.92 Bello (20.2) 0.57 Crawford (3GS/15.2) 2.04 Houck (3GS/17.2) 1.26 Whitlock (3GS/114.1) 0.82 Pivetta (2GS/11.0) 4.50 Criswell (1GS/4.0)
  14. I'm never going to argue the Sox have great defensive-teaching coaches, in their system. That would be very hard to provide evidence in support. I get your point. I'm just not so sure the main reason we've had poor defense, in the past few years is due to poor or not so good coaching. Some students just can't be reached. Some students lack the basic skills and ability to learn as much as others. That could be a bigger factor- or not. IMO, it's been a combination of acquiring players without foundational defensive skills and not very good coaching on D, or just a lack of focus on improving D over O.
  15. YES! The beginning of a Yankee implosion...
  16. That was unreal. Papelbon was pretty good at limiting drama, too. Martin was awesome, last season, but not really as a closer, much.
  17. Yes, more than fielders. That was my point. This also assumes players getting better or not is often due to good, okay or bad coaching, I guess.
  18. CLE scored 3 in the bottom of the 10th to beat NYY 8-7! Sac fly.
  19. Yes, I got so excited, I forgot he let up a run.
  20. Yes, I mentioned he had 5 BBs, before today.
  21. MLB's Best 12-3 NYY (7-7 in the 10th*) 10-4 MIL 11-5 PIT 10-5 KCR 11-6 LAD 9-5 ATL 9-5 CLE (7-7 in 10th*) 9-6 BAL 9-6 DET 8-6 CHC 8-6 CIN 9-7 BOS 12th best *CLE has 1st and 3rd with 1 out in 7-7 game with Yanks.
  22. All the ALE teams won, today, except NYY, who is up 7-5 in the 10th.
  23. Still no runs allowed for Jansen.
  24. He led the league in saves, the year after leaving LAD (1.047 WHIP in a 64 IP, while leading MLB in games finished w ATL) That year, LAD had 43 sva and 18% BSvs (70%,) while jansen had an 85% save rate.
