  1. Of course there are a lot of players who don't have the talent to make it. Think of all of the top prospects, who supposedly have all the talent in the world, but never make it. Might pressure have anything to do with that? I think it's a very valid argument that you have to be able to handle pressure to perform well enough to get to the major league level.
  2. Exactly. These players face a lot of pressure just trying to make it to MLB. The ones who make it have shown that they can withstand the pressure.
  3. Yes, it's very weird, for sure. Fangraphs did a study of the Yankees' dominance over the Twins for the 2002-2011 seasons, including postseason. Based on each teams records and run differentials, the Twins were expected to win 33.3 games out of 75. They only won 18 of those games. Statistically speaking, that result is way out there, as in it's something that just shouldn't happen. The author poses some possibilities of why the Yankees have such a large extra added advantage, most of those possibilities dealing with team construction and management tactics. The folks at Fangraphs (including commenters) don't think it has anything to do with the defeatist attitude. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/investigating-the-yankees-dominance-of-the-twins/
  4. Interestingly enough, the Jays are 3-7 in their last 10, just like the As. I wouldn't count them out though. They've been very unlucky. OTOH, the Mariners have no business even being in the conversation.
  5. Clustering hits together or, for a pitcher, scattering hits apart, are not repeatable skills. I have not been able to find the data for previous years, but if I do, I will look at how the Rays have done.
  6. The studies have been done, probably most of them on the effect of 'momentum' going into the postseason. One thing you mentioned in your other post about saying things like "I just can't miss!" after the fact is what I've been talking about. Momentum is a descriptor of what has already happened. You can use it to describe what a team has done after the fact. Trying to use it to predict what will happen in the next game or even in the next inning is virtually useless.
  7. The way the Sox rebuild is different than the way most other teams rebuild.
  8. The Rays have been very fortunate in clustering their hits together, another luck thing as opposed to a skill thing. Their offense leads all of baseball with +84.2 runs in cluster runs. The Red Sox are 13th in MLB with +29.3. That's pretty much the difference right there - clustering hits together versus spreading them out.
  9. I'm rooting for Oakland 100%. The Sox can't depend on other teams to win or lose for us. It won't matter if they don't take care of their own business.
  10. Woot! Baby steps.
  11. I do believe that players start pressing when things are not going well, and that could lead to continued slumping. I don't consider that to be the same thing as choke though. Also, do you think that, year after year, the players that have never played for the Twins before would have that defeatist attitude?
  12. Kind of the same thing, isn't it?
  13. That's about as good an explanation as any.
  14. While I won't rule out that possibility, it's not like it's the same players on the Twins over the past 20 years. It's kind of hard to imagine that several different teams of players would have a defeatist attitude.
  15. Well, you never count the Yankees out. Even when they were playing horribly, I figured they'd win one of the wildcard spots. The Red Sox had a great deal of momentum in the first half. Especially against the Yankees. That didn't continue. The Yankees have an .810 winning percentage in August. That won't continue. Just as things are not as bad as they look for the Sox right now, things are not as good as they look for the Yankees right now.
  16. You and I are on the same page with this. I am thankful that Bloom did not act rashly at the deadline.
  17. It exists as a descriptor of what has already taken place on the field. It does not exist in the sense that a team having momentum will continue to have momentum. It does not exist in the context that most people take it to mean. Therefore, I'm fine with saying that momentum does not exist.
  18. Last night's game was terrible. I don't know that I've ever said this before, but I'm actually glad today's game is rained out. I really don't want to watch Red Sox baseball right now. That said, as bad as things are right now, we really do have a good chance of making the playoffs. Obviously, we'd rather be leading the division, and having such a big negative swing in such a short time has us all a little bitter, even me. But things are never as bad as they seem when things are going bad. Hang in there.
  19. Defense, IMO, is very much underrated. Team defense was my biggest concern entering this season. Our team currently ranks 30th, and by a pretty fair margin, in defensive efficiency. I will say that I am happy that Cora now has Devers batting 2nd. Of course, Devers in now in a bit of a slump.
  20. We tend to forget that the Sox are rebuilding. Outside of a handful of posters, no one expected the Sox to even contend. And most people were okay with that as long as Bloom was improving the future outlook of the team. Well, Bloom is improving the future outlook of the team. And amazingly enough, the Sox are contending at the same time.
  21. We led baseball in come from behind wins before the ASB. We just can't seem to do that anymore. Once we get down, I currently have no confidence in them being able to come back. The offense is not doing its job. Even in last night's loss where our pitchers gave up 10 runs and our defense looked like crap, I am most upset with our offense only being able to score one run.
