  1. IMO, neither team is out of it. I would never count the Yankees out. 3.5 games with 3 months to play is nothing. A hot two week stretch could erase that. That said, neither team should be crazy buyers either. As I posted before, a lot can change before the trade deadline.
  2. Here's a good read from the best baseball site ever. Who Will Hate Robot Umps the Most? In short, the players don't seem to be in favor of it. I can’t speak for all players, obviously. I haven’t talked to all of them. But I’ve talked to plenty on both sides, even ones I can’t quote here, and the biggest endorsement I could get was a tepid version of “It’s going to happen.” They bring up some good points against it. Score one for us traditionalists.
  3. I'm not sure how your posts to me always get to the point where I'm no longer defending the topic, but rather defending what I have or have not said. You again are way off base with opinions that you are attributing to me. This entire post is wrong on every level. Quit making stuff up. Strawman argument.
  4. NOOOOOOOOO!!! I would not sell the farm in any desperation move to try to win it all this year, but I would also think we are far from being sellers. Of course, that could change over the next 3 weeks.
  5. LOL FTR, I am against robot umps. I like the human umps, warts and all.
  6. I'm not talking about the number of injuries, I'm talking about the seemingly inaccurate initial diagnoses of the injuries. I don't think our number of injuries has been particularly out of line with the norm. Plus we have not lost any of our 'star' players. It just seems like we get a lot of initial diagnoses that suggest an injury is not that bad, only to hear a couple of weeks later, after further tests, that the injury is worse than it was initially thought to be.
  7. No, but his history and his current peripherals suggest that he will return to top level. Don't you think that's possible, even likely?
  8. The Sox have a lot of home games in July. This is the month that they have to turn it around.
  9. LOL You mean in spite of FrancoMa.
  10. I have no idea what the cost would be, but I don't think it would be as high as obtaining pitching. And while we may not need an upgrade at catcher or offensively, if you can't upgrade the top of the rotation, it makes sense to upgrade the middle/bottom of the rotation and offense instead.
  11. The Os were 19-8 in the month of June, giving up 5 runs/game. The Sox were 10-16 in June, giving up 5.46 runs/game. Neither pitching staff was good. The difference? The Os offense scored 6.74 runs/game to the Sox' 4.85 runs/game. In other words, the Os hit their way into first place in June, much like we did in May.
  12. I am really starting to warm up to the idea of trading for Lucroy. At first, it didn't make much sense. But credit fellow BDC poster JoeB and one of the sports writers for convincing me otherwise. The improvement that we can get from Lucroy offensively (and he is very good defensively also) in addition to adding a #3/4 pitcher will be greater than the improvement we can get from adding a top of the rotation pitcher, unless we could add someone like Kershaw, which isn't happening. Not to mention the cost would be more reasonable.
  13. I agree that both Swihart and Vazquez will be fine. I also agree that Swihart is likely to be traded. IMO, other teams still value him highly, and he will be worth more to another team as a catcher (who can also play left field) than he is worth to us as a left fielder. IMO, some of the moves made at the beginning of this year were not made out of necessity. Rather, they were made out of a 'sense of urgency', which is not the same thing.
  14. You're probably right, but I'd like to think otherwise. Speaking of motivators, wouldn't it be nice to have Tito right now? I might become a Tribe fan.
  15. Dombrowski has stated that he is aggressively looking for pitching, but as of now, there are only 5 teams who are clear sellers. I'm sure the prices are astronomical. As you said, it will be another 3 weeks before talks get serious. In the meantime, we need to hope that Price can pitch like an ace, and that Buchholz can regain some semblance of the pitcher that he was last year. We also need the offense to do its job. They were shut out by a pitcher with a 5+ ERA yesterday. Unacceptable.
  16. Or perhaps they were rallying around Farrell's battle with cancer.
  17. Yes, I agree with that.
  18. In terms of contracts, I don't understand how anyone can say that signing Price for 7yrs/$210 was worth the risk, but signing Buchholz for 1yr/$13 mil was not worth the risk. I do not like Price's contract at all, but I fully understand why the FO did it, and I'm glad to have him on my team. As you all know, picking up Buchholz' option was a no brainer.
  19. When we have the mess that we currently have in our #4/5 slots, we need to be able to win the games that Price starts.
  20. I agree that the comparison of Buchholz and Price is a little off. I still have faith in Buchholz (I know, call me crazy), but Price is the much better bet for many reasons.
  21. I can't speak for others, but if by 'they' you are including me, you are 100% off base. Quit making false statements about what 'they' think. As far as Buchholz goes, I have acknowledged that he has been awful so far. So, am I not allowed to voice an opinion that Price has not pitched to his level of expectation so far?
  22. I am not 'all over' Price. I have stated that he is not the problem. I am simply saying that, as our ace and leader of the staff, he needs to pitch better. Can you deny that? As far as being patient with him, here is what I posted to UN before the first time you questioned my patience: I'm not saying that he's a sunk cost or anything. He gets more time to become acclimated. I'm just saying as our ace, he will need to do better. It's not like I'm calling for him to be DL'd or DFA'd, or calling his contract a huge mistake. FTR, I am confident that he will find his ace level pitching soon. Also FTR, it is my opinion that the offense is largely to blame for our record in June. They weren't as bad as they were in May of last year, but there were several games where the pitching was good enough to keep us in the game, and the offense came up empty.
  23. You can agree with the philosophy of aggressive baserunning or not, but that's the way the philosophy usually works. Bad outs are going to be made on the basepaths, but runs are also going to be created by the aggressive approach. In other words, you take the bad with the good, and hope the good outweighs the bad. That said, I agree that it seems there is a lack of coaching when it comes to whether the benefit of advancing an extra base outweighs the risk of making an out. JBJ's decision was a terrible one.
  24. I am still on the fence about Farrell. Personally, I don't think his in game moves have been that bad. Also, I don't think he's lost the clubhouse or anything like that. That said, if the players continue to play like they did in June, that would make 3 straight years of this team underperforming, rather grossly I might add, under Farrell's leadership. That does lead one to wonder what the heck is going on with this coaching staff and Farrell in particular. All that said, firing Farrell is not the answer to our current woes.
  25. Farrell did mention something yesterday that is worth some thought. He said that perhaps Price is focusing too much on striking batters out rather than on just getting outs. Maybe Price is getting too much of the plate too often because he's trying strike batters out, rather than just trying to make quality pitches?
